That Ride isn´t just for Kids no ride in any Park is just for Kids we can ride them as well as Adults since we were Kids one time ourselves😋so yes if hopefully it is still around in 2 yrs for my first and possible only Trip to the West-coast I will ride it since it is kinda better than in WDW since it gives some illusion to go under water and there it is kinda like Ariel Ride even when they mixed the ride with the Aquarium there as well.
Yeah for some maybe the asian wild boat Rides would be something better if that is still around were you kinda driving on the water some kinda water autodrom vehicle if someone has the guts and not afraid in going into the water. 😂🤣
The day it re-openned, the public was not let on until about noon. VIPs went first. By the time the public was let on, the line reached to the front of It's a Small World. Over 6.5 hours. It was nuts.

I rode the 20,000 Leagues version in the Magic Kingdom in the 80’s.
My first trip to DL this was my first attraction to visit. Was on my list because of the history of it.
This was my first attraction too on my first visit to Disneyland in 1994 as I was staying at the Disneyland hotel and entered the park by Monorail, so it was close to were I entered the park, I still remember that. Having gone to the 20,000 leagues version at the Magic Kingdom before, I actually thought that it was kinda lame, especially the sea serpent with the silly face in the end of the ride, but I still liked it.
When the subs re-opened in 2007 we were there for the media event. My daughter at the time was only 5 months old but they gave her a media credential! I don’t recall if we took her on the ride. Looking back at my photos there were a lot of celebrities on the “blue carpet” as it was. The food was all themed to Nemo, as was the cocktails!
When I rode the subs with my niece back in 2013 and the "balloons" popped, she said in the darkness afterwards "was that supposed to happen?" Cue giggles from all the adults.
I remember riding it back when it was still themed around 20,000 leagues and the nautilus was caption nemos submarine. Also still love the puns and the inspirational messages really help this time of year.
The Nautilus went under the Arctic Ocean, not under Antarctica. Antarctica is a continent. It’s land.

Chris, they WERE real submarines. Built by the same company that builds the U.S. Nuclear fleet, General Dynamics. Which at the time allowed Walt to say he had the 8th largest fleet in the world. They COULD be submerged. But never were. Regulations made it so that they were then made to not be submerged and classified as "boats" for this reason. The Nautilus traversed the Arctic to the North Pole, not Antarctica. Also, the name was tied to the movie 20,000 leagues under the sea which was the ORIGINAL adventure that was part of the sub ride, including the Giant Sea Squid from the movie, which was from 1954. The room was put in due to CALOSHA who threatened to close/shut down the ride because it couldn't be made to be ADA compliant. As they did for many DL rides at the time including but not limited to, Alice in Wonderland, Storyboats and the Treehouse. We not only had the Sea Serpent, but there we the live Mermaids as well. It is true that there were people who did try to swim to the mermaids including a person allegedly from the navy. Your ARE "underwater" just like one of those Caribbean boats that have a plastic bottom but you're under the surface looking out. Just because the whole sub doesn't go "under" doesn't mean YOU aren't.

DDC, that is true because I worked at General Dynamics in San Diego. I saw the schematics in the archive. Walt asked GD how to do it? GD told Walt to stop, and they send out the plans. The Subs were assembled in Long Beach. The propeller still works, so that how they move.

Not "rea'l" submarines. They did not have the capability nor the equipment onboard to submerge or raise by their own power nor did they have oxygen generators and carbon scrubbers.. They were simply a sealed tub on tracks. Just because a sub builder manufactured them does not make them "real" submarines. They only used the sub manufacture because they were the only ones at the time that could test them for leaks and structural stability.

Hi Chris, Just love your postings! I do have to point out that early on there was a submarine that was named after the Nautilus but it was not named after the Navy sub. It was named and looked just like the Nautilus from the Disney movie 20,000 leagues under the sea. All the other subs were gray and the same. But the Nautilus sub was a perfect re-creation of the movie sub.
All of those submarines take their name from a genus of marine mollusc. A Nautilus is one of only a few free swimming shelled molluscs, basically a sea snail. USS Nautilus (SSN-571) however easily shakes the "snail" reference as for its time it was a super fast submarine. Since its hull was still that of the surface submersible shape it suffered from bad handling when submerged compared to the much sleek albacore planform you see on modern military submarines.
Interesting fact, I had always assumed that the Nautilus was named after Captain Nemo’s ship in Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. The more you know…

The US nuclear sub was named after Jules Verne's Nautilus. Surprised there was no mention of the original 20,000 Leagues ride Finding Nemo was adapted from.
@@daytoncastleman9463 When the Disney World version of this ride existed it was themed after the 1959 movie, it was called 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Submarine Voyage. Due to the upkeep cost and that it has not been overhauled for many years Disney sadly decided to close and demolish it. This is sad because I thought it was the best iteration of the Submarine Voyage ride, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is still a movie I enjoy.

Im so claustrophobic I can never even go down those steps, but I found out about that room awhile back, so that was great alternative

We don’t ride it too much but at the end of the night the line is short and you can pop right on before leaving the park.🎉
Thats my family in line for Nemo at 20:34, we were super excited at the prospect of seeing you while we were there but only saw you get off the ride and stop and talk for a moment before heading down the exit, we didnt want to yell all the way over there to say hi, so we let it be but just wanted to say hi here i suppose haha

Under Autopia. I used to work Autopia and the subs go under the track. There’s a catwalk for people if the subs stopped under the track which led to a black iron spiral staircase to the surface. When on Autopia, look behind you at the track bridge supports and you’ll see a set of doors. There’s a couple if I remember correctly. This was before Nemo though

I had a Disneyland calendar from the 1990s that said the Subs were going to be rethemed to "The Little Mermaid," which of course, never happened.

Nautilus - let’s give credit for the name to author Jules Verne who wrote “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea”, which was serialized in 1869!

I have two more secrets for you. If you look at the piping above the loading area, it has a flow arrow and says “TL59”. This stands for “Tomorrow Land 1959” which is when the attraction opened. This same marking can actually be found on a pipe in the movie Finding Dory which is a direct reference to the subs.
The second one is hard to spot. The original attraction used to feature mermaids (like you said) and at the end, had a sea serpent called “The Silly Sea Serpent”. Towards the end of the current attraction, just before you surface, a tribute to both of these can be seen. The rocks start to form humps and then an oddly shaped rock makes up the head of the sea serpent with his tongue out. Similarly, the rocks on the wall behind the sea serpent make up the outline of a mermaid with some sea grass as the hair. The Soundtrack actually makes reference to this when they say something along the lines of “let’s surface before we have a run-in with a sea serpent or an encounter with a mermaid”. They’re very hard to spot, but those are my favourite Easter eggs.

I rode this for the first time last week and it blew me away! It was such a wonderful combination of new and old technology with practical and digital effects. They told the whole story of Finding Nemo in 14 minutes. So cute and fascinating!

I recall waiting on those long lines that wrapped around the lagoon when the ride reopened. It had been such a long time coming everyone was eager to ride the subs again!
Actually there were a number of simple audioanimatronic mermaids along with the sea serpent on both sides of the boat. FYI submarines are considered boats. The senior enlisted on a sub is called a COB meaning "Chief Of the Boat."

I remember the mermaids. My sister and I were so excited for the ride in 96 or 97, and then it just looked so cheesy and fake. They've done a much better job with the Nemo version.
When The Magic Kingdom opened in Florida in 1971, all of the subs were made to look like the submarine Nautilus from the movie "20,000 Leagues Under The Sea". I miss their killer design.
The year was 2008 and my 4yr old loved Finding Nemo. As soon as the Submarine ride started, she began screaming and didn’t stop for the duration. When we were exiting, a cast member told us about the room we could have used to experience the ride. I’ve been going to Disney my entire life and didn’t know it existed. 🫤
I felt so bad for everyone on board, but a little more for the trauma she endured. A 4yr old’s imagination is limitless.
(Fifteen years later, it’s a good “When you were 4…” story)

Yes,the Shaggy dog rode along on opening day 1959. Human women cast as mermaids,Once again in the 10th anniversary of the ride. Per All Ears submarines were first painted Yellow 1986 . The videos here on CZcams with Art Linkletter, and Walt Disney .

Thanks for another great video! Yes, this has VERY high operating costs but not sure if you know why. It’s actually for all of the projector lamps required for the “underwater” video projectors. Because you’re having to view it through water they’re large and very bright commercial projectors. The lamps are very expensive and have to be replaced constantly due to being run all day long.

Chris, the Nuatilus did not pass submerge under Antartica. Antarctica is a continent, like North America. She passed under the ice pack in the Artic Ocean, becoming the first vessel to go to/from the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Chris, Back in the old timey day's,on still hot day's. The diesel fumes would gather and hold under the loading, unloading area. By late afternoon you could find yourself standing in a fog of fumes while you waited to board. On lucky day's you could even taste the diesel. Cheers, Chris Perry.

Alas, we are just about done. We'll go into Disneyland for a couple hours in a little while. Then go home tomorrow. 8 days and it seems too short. I think that's because we're at the Grand Californian, which is TOO AWESOME!!! I've never before sat in the lobby of a hotel just to chill and wallow in the ambiance.
They did a great job this year in the Grand this year.
Hey Chris, I knew about the mermaids part of the attraction but I did not know about the dog in a submarine part of it. What I learned from this video was the attraction opening in 1959 having a line that spiraled around the lagoon which I could've imagined something totally new. I am very glad you did this video and I was going to suggest you doing this video because lesser known attractions like this should get some more appreciation. Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage has some great lighting effects on the electric eel and on everything else. I have always skipped this one but watching this video made me appreciate the ride more so I might give it a go next time I'm in Disneyland.

Before I even watch the video I am going to say that one thing they have done for many many years is pump cool air in through the bottom of every window so when you have you face crammed up to one to look out you get a stream of fresh cool air.
On a hot day the dark cool of the submarine ride was the best!
After watching the video I realize I have not been on the submarine ride since the Finding Nemo 2007 reboot.
It's just not the same. I miss the silly sea serpent at the end of the ride!

I moved to Los Angeles around 1987, and the subs were yellow by then... but one of them--my favorite--was still named the Sea Wolf. Not sure when the rename happened, but it was AFTER the repaint.
That tracks with a hazy memory I have of watching someone's home movie shot during the 60-hour opening party for Star Tours in January of '87. This was shot by two kids with annual passes who went all the time and made reference to having attended the Captain Eo grand opening as well. At one point, they wander over to the submarine ride and comment about the 'new' paint jobs. Eo opened in June of 86, so that brackets the time frame of the subs getting a new paint job to sometime in that seven-month span between the two openings.
Growing up as a kid in the 90's in California, I only ever rode the old one! I loved it. I visited in 2004 and it was closed, then again in 2008 and the line was soooo long that we skipped it. My upcoming 2024 trip will be my first time! (yes I know it's been too long! A lot of (expensive) life events have happened in my life in those years!)

I always loved the submarines. I went on it with my dad as a kid. A bunch of years later, I took my mom on it. She said that I wouldn’t like it cuz they just took you a couple feet below to show you some plastic fish. 😂 Not a lie, but I love it. I’m glad they brought it back. But I haven’t been there since the Nemo makeover.

Back in the mid 70's the Sub's were *Gun Metal Gray* and crew members (that's what they were called, I am not about CM as in Cast Members) wore Blue Dungarees and Light Blue Shirts and a Cover (Sailor's Hat); I had a friend back then that was a crew member that help run the Sub Attraction. Some of the crew members even had *ranks* just like the Navy. Not for sure but I think they repainted the sub's in the early 80s because I graduated in 1985 and they were yellow.
I went to Disneyland on the day before the Nemo Subs opened and I happened to spot Tony Baxter outside my hotel. He was very nice and gave me an autographed Nemo Subs pin.

The submarines never submerge under the water. They are on a track. Some of the features underwater and themes have changed but it is the same ride I rode on my first time in 1969. I was only 5! Good ride for young kids to do with their dads.

the sea monster is still at the end of the ride however they made it look like Coral but if you look really close you can still see the tongue
I was the Sub Commander for 3 years in the 80's. I worked with several of the original mermaids. The chemical stories are true but they also told me that the water was VERY cold.
All my trips to DL, I haven't gone on Nemo/20,000 Leagues Under the Sea since I was a kid in the 80's. We bypass it every time, but next trip, I'm going on it even if I have to go single rider!
I had a friend who was a helmsman. Another secret... He said the air in the sub gets recycled into his face. So, any mixture of perfumes, body odor, flatulence, and other potent aromas would be sent straight to his nose. This was in the 80s, so hopefully they've improved things since then. But those days were not pleasant for him. I still thought it would be cool to drive one, tho, and see the inside nothingness. See what nobody else is able to see.

I think the submarine has always been my favorite ride at disneyland! I wanted to be a dolphin trainer or marine scientist when I was little, because of this ride and also the Flipper show.
