    Locking tuners, stainless steel frets and a Graphtech nut should be the industry on all guitars over $800.

      I agree. My Harley Benton Fusion II has locking tuners, Nu-bone nut and stainless steel frets and I paid about $330 including shipping with a cheap gig bag. Of course the pickups are not as good as the RGA42HPQM-BIG's.

    Another nice guitar from Ibanez, who should always be in the same breath as Fender and PRS (and that Nashville guitar company) as top builders. I agree with you, locking tuners should be a standard feature.

    Thanks for the review, I learned some things and it is appreciated. Two years after this video (March 2023), with prices soaring like mad, I just grabbed one of these beauties w/ a stock double-locking Floyd Rose for $670 US. Brand-new through my go to shop during a winter clearance sale + a bit off because it was a floor demo (small cosmetic issue as a result). There are deals to be had that are too good to pass up. Powered by my UK made JCM800, I'm tearing through the sky and cracking the Earth at my discretion. Rip some riffs and smile everyone!

    The amount of people bemoaning a lack of locking tuners on this guitar is pretty sad. I've had this guitar for about two weeks now and it just gets better and better each time I play it. You will probably be able to find it a price that justifies the lack of locking tuners now and I can't recommend it highly enough.

    I think the extra money for this High Performance version of the RGA42FM illustrates well how strange the RGA series' pricing is. Whereas this guitar costs $500 more than the RGA42FM, the RG421HPFM (essentially this guitar's cousin) costs only $400 more than the RG421. That cost difference is probably attributed to this guitar's finished back (which the RGA421HPFM lacks). Though this guitar's roasted maple neck should feel lovely, the RG series offers a good compromise: the RGRT421's five-piece neck and neck-through construction should provide at least as much stability. The RGRT421 costs $260 less than the RG421HPFM and $460 less than the RGA42HPQM: the former cost difference easily covers locking tuners and new electronics (including pickups), and the latter cost difference may well cover a full refret with stainless-steel frets. Just how much is the RGA's beveled body worth to you?

    • @martinkrauser4029

      Trailing "1" = Hardtail Bridge
      "HP" = High Performance

      It might help to have Ibanez's site open such that you can refer to the models as you read. Ibanez's model naming convention is quite logical, due to its consistency and Ibanez's need for a consistent standard across writing systems.

    I have to agree with you. I love Ibanez and I only play Ibanez guitars because I love the designs, technically and visually. Great shapes, fantastic neck profiles, great playability, beautiful finishes. But the HP series is kinda meh, I must say. They are not bad guitars at all but except for the pickups and the roasted maple neck there's not a lot of "High Performance" going on on this guitar. Why not the Gibraltar bridge instead of the F106? Why no locking tuners? This is 899 EUR, made in Indonesia.
    And yes, Schecter has guitars for 899 that come with locking tuners, 5-piece laminated necks and Wilkinson Tremolos or Hipshot bridges.
    When I see this guitar, it's like: "Well... okay... For this price I can get another 550 made in Japan in a different color!" :D

    As for all the different specs across the range, I imagine even a few cents per guitar really adds up when you're producing thousands of them. If you're building to a price point, you have to cut costs somewhere; you focus on certain more upscale specs, you have to cut corners on others. Plus, they're working with different factories, which might have different cost structures. It's probably a lot more complicated than "Why don't they just do this on every model?!"

    I think Ibanez wants to have their Axion Labels and Iron Labels as the main 800-1200 guitars but their HP series is kinda the place where they purely want to make an extra buck. This guitar realistically should be no more that 600-700 bucks. But maybe this is how they are getting the GIOs so good at that low a price; gotta make a buck somewhere, I guess?
    EDIT: just checked and the HP series runs from anywhere between 400-700 depending on the model. I stand corrected. I guess the 900 was the list price that you mentioned, Henning?

    It sounds like a ripoff, for something very beautiful looking and sounding. Well, at least for the 2H setting, the rest is kinda meh.

    Bullshit CLICKBAIT to make us think this was 42HP-BIG was the Henning signature model. Shame on Ibanez!

    Qm stands for quilted 🍁.. I actually bought this guitar with the floyd bridge .. basically cuz I had already bought an epi prophecy and it was so horrible I HAD to return it.. has 4 or 5 high frets and they felt like sandpaper.. so talk about an overpriced guitar at $900 I was shocked at how bad it was.. anyway I digress.. so I swapped that for this ibanez.. which is what brought me here.. hopefully when it arrives I like it more than that epi.. which isn't that high of a mark to beat.. killer demo as usual.. u da man🤙🎛🎼🎶🎸🤟
