The flip side of Natasha Denona's Golden Palette | UPSIDE DOWN INSIDE OUT REVIEW

  • Natasha Denona Golden Palette: When is a monochromatic palette more than just a monochromatic palette? Why is this "boring" color story actually a genius move? Is this palette the best way to work with the current trends?
    "Clean" is in, but is that kind of marketing backfiring? When is a preservative not a preservative? What does "clean" mean to Natasha Denona's brand, and what does it mean for us as consumers? Is the shelf life going to be a problem? How does one actually pronounce words like "Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydrocinnamate"?
    This upside down, inside out review attempts to answer these questions - and more - to let you know if the Natasha Denona Golden Palette might be for you.

      Part of me hopes that a cosmetic chemist might happen upon this video and share their knowledge - it would be interesting to hear from someone who works in the industry. Between companies selling us stuff, fear mongering from certain interest groups, and the legal mumbo jumbo of regulations, it can be hard to really figure out what's going on. I have a feeling the truth is somewhere in the middle. Trying to find that middle is the hard part. 😉

  • @LisaF_
    @LisaF_ Před měsícem +5

    The Golden is for me! I’m a light olive tone and Golden will be the best INAN for me available. (I like the actual INAN, but it’s too pink and cool to be actually nude to me) I already have the OG Gold, but the updated shimmers do speak to me! I cannot lie!
    I had not heard about ND going “clean”. I’m not a fan of that, in fact, I hate it. PRESERVATIVE FREE?? No thank you. Ugh this is terrible news. My OG Gold is OLD at this point. But…it still works as it did when it was brand new.
    It’s funny, the brand hasn’t made a big deal of this “going preservative free” at all.
    I hope you’re right and the ingredients you mentioned ARE preservatives. That would make me feel much better. I hope this “24 month” shelf life is the same “24 months” that I’ve gotten on all her palettes (which has been years and years)
    If you have time, I’d still love to see your original video!! ⭐️

    • @TheStyleStumbler
      @TheStyleStumbler  Před měsícem +2

      The updated shimmers are noticeably different, so I can understand the temptation. Although I do feel that some of the updated shades are a little lackluster compared to the original. Enough people seem interested in an in-depth review that I will complete mine and show the comparisons in detail.
      It surprised me too! The first time I heard that Natasha Denona was going "clean" was when people started responding to my last ND video. But I looked at my old packaging vs the new and lo and behold: "preservative free" is new. I wouldn't put too much stock into the "going clean" changes. I have a feeling they have more to do with market niche than anything that would actually affect us as consumers (at least at the moment).
      I'm also hoping that the longevity of the palette will remain as good as the older palettes. Based on what I looked into, I'm not worried. But I guess time will be the judge of all things. ;-)

    to me this is very much similar to the Xenon palette, just on a different end of the spectrum. i'm a cool tone person - like, i can really only wear cool tones without looking alarming. i cannot get away with neutrals or things that are just slightly cool. i need a strong blue/violet bias to all cheek, eye, and lip products, and i also need white/grey to mute things everywhere but my lips. i enjoyed your take on this. the way i see it, people will buy it because they love the colours and the quality of the shadows. it doesn't matter if they're all similar. some people really, really love that. if anyone anywhere ever makes a palette of any size that's straight-up muted blue-based violets, violet-based blues, greys, and browns that are basically greys, and maybe a few mint-grey and icy blue mint shades, or even a monochromatic palette based on a single one of these, i'd be all over it. i don't think that's ever going to happen. the only reason i didn't seriously consider Xenon is because of [1] all the glittery stuff (i can't do glitter in any kind of way); and [2] most of the shades would be way too deep for my pale skin. but i loved her commitment to the nuance of the grey scale, and if it was a 1/2 to 3/4 light and 1/4 to 1/2 medium valued shades, with no glitter but some satins and non-glitter pearls, i'd've been all over it.
    i really enjoy your content. something about your voice is very soothing and i love your sense of humour and your playfulness. that is why i'm watching a video about a palette i have zero interest in. :) technically i'm in it for the colour, and i love all colours (even ones i can't personally wear), and i love seeing people's takes on colour.

      I think you're very right. Natasha Denona seems to enjoy exploring nuance. I appreciate it (especially in this palette, since it leans in my color direction), but I can see why many people think there's not enough variation. I think it would be lovely to see her come out with your ideal palette. I don't know that I would buy it, but I would certainly enjoy seeing it.

I had no idea ND is going "clean", but I also don't pay a lot of attention to them because their color stories have too many redundant shades for my taste (and I don't buy palettes anyway). This is such a good review! I’m not even interested in this palette (I’m more on the Xenon side of the undertone spectrum), but this was so interesting to watch.
    Also, regarding the preservative discussion, the preservatives you’ve pointed out seem to keep the product from going off/stale rather than providing anti bacterial preservation. I’m not a cosmetic chemist or anything, but that’s my interpretation and I would still expect these new ND products to go bad faster than I would like. As someone who likes to keep makeup for a long time, I like my makeup full of strong preservatives (like parabens).

    • @TheStyleStumbler
      @TheStyleStumbler  Před měsícem +1

      That's a very good point. Another commenter with a science background mentioned that the preservative effects of many ingredients are strongly influenced by what they are combined with, the ratios, and how the solution is processed. So, for example, Ethylhexylglycerin boosts antimicrobial efficacy of certain ingredients - which would help against bacteria. But the question becomes: is the Ethylhexylglycerin combined with antimicrobial ingredients at the right ratio to have that benefit? And since we don't know what the ratio is based on the ingredients list, it becomes impossible for consumers to know.
      So I'm going to continue using my best judgement. I clean my brushes and disinfect my makeup regularly, and pay attention to the health of my skin. If I happen to notice that a certain product that never gave me issues suddenly causes even mild irritation, then I figure it's time for it to go. And of course, if it stops performing, it's time, too. But that has only very rarely happened to my powders. Creams and liquids on the other hand... I've started dramatically limiting how much of those items I buy because they seem to noticeably expire faster (at least compared to powders).
      Thanks for taking the time to write such a thoughtful comment! 💛

    • @TheStyleStumbler
      @TheStyleStumbler  Před měsícem

      Thanks for the info! But considering that Dior released the new formulation in 2023, I believe you may have the old formula, which I believe had a longer shelf life. But I have a feeling you and I might feel the same way about official expiration dates: that they're more of a suggestion than fact. I use powders until they no longer perform of irritate my skin - but those things rarely happen.
      So I sincerely hope that even the new Dior quints last like other powders, despite their "official" short shelf life. And I am so glad you continue to enjoy yours! It was lovely to hear from you! 💛

    • @Cicelyize
      @Cicelyize Před měsícem

      Absolutely. I wonder if those expiration dates are the brand’s way of introducing some “programmed obsolescence” in their products- without having mouldy palettes within 6 months, which would be bad publicity. The Dior quads I have are the hyped formula before the 2023 reformulation and expiration date also 6 months. 😘😘😘

    • @TheStyleStumbler
      @TheStyleStumbler  Před měsícem +2

      @Cicelyize That is very useful info - thank you for letting me know that the expiration dates were always that short for Dior! 🤯
      I think you’re on to something. I bet there are many people out there who will replace a palette once the expiration date passes, not realizing that the powders are probably fine. Planned obsolescence as a phenomenon rubs me the wrong way, but that’s not even REAL!
      I have a feeling this is a deep rabbit hole.

    I'm fine with the ingredients and cutting out preservatives on a personal level because after having a few painful dermatitis episodes on my face, I had allergy patch testing done. And yep, I am allergic to some of those sorts of ingredients. But I think the "clean" label is just marketing. I don't look for "clean" labels--I carefully scrutinize EVERY ingredient list, doesn't matter the brand, doesn't matter high end or low end, etc.
    I wonder if they are planning on cutting those out of all ND products, though. I can't use the ND concealer, for example, due to it having propylene glycol and phenoxyethanol. So I wonder if this only applies to new products.
    Highly recommend patch testing for anyone that has had multiple reactions to makeup or skincare!

    • @TheStyleStumbler
      @TheStyleStumbler  Před měsícem +1

      Sensitive, reactive, or allergic skin is so tricky and become increasingly common. So I can understand why many people like that companies are starting to leave some of those reaction-triggering chemicals out of their formulas. But you're right: "clean" is tricky. My main issue with "clean" branding is that there's no standard definition - brands use it as marketing tool, but that term doesn't actually give consumers the information we need. And those of us with sensitivities are still left reading through lengthy lists of ingredients. And yes: patch testing can save a lot of pain and frustration!
      I am not aware that Natasha Denona ever actually announced "going clean" (I just found out myself when so many people shared their concerns on my first "golden palette" video) so I'm not sure what the plan is for the line. It seems like several companies are making the change quietly. For example, I was recently watching a video by @Frenchforaday, where she discussed the fact that Chanel products that she has been repurchasing for years are suddenly starting to expire quickly. So she suspects Chanel is quietly "going clean".
      So it looks like the responsibility ultimately rests with us to read through the ingredients and decide what best suits are needs.

    Before you said anything I picked up a slight difference in the makeup on each eye, but I would have put it down to lighting or something. It wasn't till you did the closeup that the nuance really hit me.
    As an observer of make up application in the world, my experience says that there is tons of good drama to be found in using a color story that compliments the wearer's natural complexion and can either create that no makeup look or a look that highlights the shape of the eye or the face and just brings a sense of vitality.
    My general rule with ingredient lists is that if there is an extremely multi-syllabic word i can't pronounce, I assume it was probably create in a lab to be a preservative, but I am also not any sort of chemist. Your discussion of the ingredients makes me think of the various articles I've read over the ears about the general authenticity and efficacy of the use of organic/natural/clean/preservative-free etc. in product labeling because of bureaucratic standards around amount of a particular substance in a product. Also how the legalese language and the small print to the small print basically gives space for all sorts of claims to be put on packaging because none of the terms have strict regulations around their use.

      You always have had a spectacular eye for detail, Zach. I'm not surprised that you saw the difference.
      Finding items that match our taste and coloring really is key to feeling comfortable in our skin. I feel like some complexions can deal more easily with drama than others. I have a low-drama face (at least when it comes to color, but definitely not when it comes to my dancing eyebrows), so color stories like this feel very magnetic.
      The practical realities of chemistry in consumer products is tough for us laypeople. All the long names that sound like gobbledygook certainly don't help. And trying to make sense out of what things actually are is so difficult! Between companies trying to sell and market stuff, special interest groups trying to fear monger, and the lack of standard definitions of things like "clean" or "preservatives", it feels like an impossible task. But after taking a look at some of these ingredients, I ended up feeling like I could make a more logical decision about the way this product will probably perform in the future. I think learning how to search for information and make balanced decisions is probably the only way to go.
      It's always lovely to have you along for the ride Zach. Thanks for always playing in the dirt with me! 💛

      I have an eye for detail, although sometimes my eyes have to convince my brain that their right.
      One of my things when I talk about useful bureaucracy is the standardization of terms in advertising and manufacturing. There's too much nonsense language that just causes confusion, and it needs to be streamlined. When it comes to the natural/organic/clean issue, there should be one set of standards.
      I'm very happy to follow you on this ride of playing with fancy dirt. 😁💛

    Im 0% interested in this palette (too expensive, too monchromatic, doesnt suit my coloring, i never wear gold etc etc), but i love your level headed discussion. It does seem like a marketing ploy. Clean beauty mystifies me because if stuff doesnt have preservatives it's going to grow more bacteria. So you might be absorbing fewer...i dont even know what we're trying to avoid?--but your makeup is now more of petri dish than it was before. And like lip products? Youre putting that petri dish In. Your. Mouth. Okay rant over 😂 really enjoyed this video bye!

      @TheStyleStumbler  Před měsícem +1

      I agree with you: I don't want my products to become petri dishes. I can understand where people are coming from when they want "clean" things - I don't want to be putting dangerous chemicals on my face either. But I feel like there's a healthy balance. A few preservatives used at safe levels is a price I'm willing to pay. Especially because "clean" isn't a standardized term. It's far too vague to actually mean anything.

    Some ingredients aren’t a “preservative” by themselves, but are when combined. For your example, “salt” can be used as a preservative, but chloride and sodium by themselves is not. So depending on how the ingredients are listed (combined or not combined) would impact the phrasing.

But honestly, I'm putting a pause on the brand myself because of her marketing tactics aka "leaks". It bothers me that every launch of hers "leaks" and then content creators would be threatened for sharing the news. Beauty news accounts share the news because people are excited, not to ruin a brand. That tactic just played out too many times for my liking.

      The first time I heard about it was in response to my first ND video, so I was taken by surprise, too. And I agree: the whole "leak" thing is suspect. But talking up a leaked product shortly before its actual launch seems like it would actually help her business by increasing hype, not hurt it. As an outsider, perhaps I don't have all the info. • @TheStyleStumbler
      @TheStyleStumbler  Před měsícem +1

      Those goblins sure are sweet talkers. You might be able to talk yourself out of it by creating a look with this:
      Mac's "Hidden Album" is VERY similar to Golden's "Varis"
      Mac's "Dial up the Gold" is a similar color to Golden's "Fizzy" (the textures are different though - Fizzy is more of a topper)
      Mac's "Uniterrupted" is similar to Golden's "Teak"
      And if you mix Mac's "Give me cyberspace" with "Sonic Chocolate" you get something very similar to Golden's "Log"
      That will give you a feel for what the Golden Palette offers. If that's still too cool-toned, you might want to consider Urban Decay's "Naked Honey" palette instead - that palette has a slightly warmer take on gold.
      Because so many people asked for a full-on review of this one, I'll include those comparisons in that video.
      But no matter what you do: the Golden Palette is part of the permanent range, which means if you decide you want it, it's definitely worth waiting for a sale. ND's website usually runs a very good black friday sale.
