You can’t honestly say we should be looking to counter attack Newcastle or Sheffield. You can always set up to counter when out of possession and revert back to possession if the counter fails.

We didn't attack.. we absorbed attacks and goals, then looked for a chance to counter.. because we had speed. We were basically in top level survival mode.. reacting enough to get to stay in top 4 but never seriously contend for top spot. Which is all the Glazers wanted anyway. In any business you don't need to be number one, just be around the top and the shareholders get good profits and are happy enough and demand more of the same. But once that top 4 is threatened they change the manager.

Under Ralf its about control, repossesion and defending in all areas. This loses us the counter attack option as the ball is always surrounded in all 3 areas of the pitch by everybody with no holes or spaces to take advantage of. I hope this is a temporary condition and the attack improvement will follow, which is rather pathetic at present.
the squad inherently was best suited for counter attack(quality attackers but lacked good ball holding midfielders), and many of these connections show that during Ole's period he gave them freedom to develop their own fluid build up, If only he could get a midfielder this season, which he and Fletcher were trying for, things would've been very different right now
