I know this is old, but same, I'm much older now, for me it was the back story he had and although he was portrayed as a villain character in some instances he cared about Maria making him seem more personable. made a good premise for a lot of fanfictions I read. Now adays I still have crushes on cartoon characters specifically because it's a safe space for me where anything bad that happens is fake since I had a lot of bad things happen to me when I was a kid, it also feels nice to gain strength or protection based on fanfictions or even learn things that can be utilized in real life.
