    nWo Elite & The End of the nWo era in WCW
    After the "Fingerpoke of Doom" incident in WCW, Kevin Nash and Hulk Hogan joined forces once again. The rivalry between the nWo Wolfpac and nWo Hollywood had come to an end, and it looked like the New World Order was going to get rebooted. Hulk Hogan, Scott Steiner, Scott Hall and Buff Bagwell became members of the Wolfpac, and this new mixture of superstars now wearing the red and black colours would become known as the "nWo Elite", or to be more specific, the "nWo Wolfpac Elite".
    Naturally, if one wasn't part of the "Elite", then you're on the B-team. While the nWo was supposed to be a united force once again in WCW, there was still a split. The nWo B-team, consisting of lower card superstars, were still presented as the "black and white" nWo while the Elite (wearing red and black) were featured in bigger matches with more prominence on TV. So, while this "reboot" was supposed to bring the nWo back to it's former glory days, in reality, nothing changed.
    This video follows what happened to the nWo following the Finger Poke of Doom in WCW.
    00:00 - The Thunder episode after the Fingerpoke of Doom
    05:15 - The Giant is kicked out of the nWo
    06:32 - Problems between nWo Elite & nWo B-Team
    08:56 - Hogan's title defenses while in "The Elite"
    11:38 - The Elite begins to crumble
    14:54 - Red and Yellow Hulk Hogan returns
    16:36 - Vince Russo and Hulk Hogan
    - Much More!

    The most frustrating thing about this time in WCW: WAY too many face and heel turns. Kevin Nash had the most here, going from face to heel after the Fingerpoke of Doom in January '99, then turning face again after DDP's heel turn and World Title win in April, then back to a heel after Hogan came back in July and beat Savage for the World Title. Then there was the Hogan and Flair double-turn at Uncensored (Flair turning heel, Hogan turning face).

    I think the main problem aside from a lot of the members being essentially groupies, just sitting and walking around backstage doing really nothing, was there was no strong babyface to oppose them. Goldberg got neutered and Sting was taking time off. No one else was built to join the main event scene at the time. So they were too overpowered and it became too one sided to hold enough fans' interest. It was different when the nWo first formed in '96 and were really fresh and exciting.

In the meantime I would have held off on the Goldberg main event push until the beginning of '99. This would have given him more time to gain experience as he was still seriously green, and he could have kept the undefeated streak longer. Two birds with one stone.

      @@anthonyanderson9303 well….I think I would’ve kept Bret Hart far away from Goldberg in retrospect on account of the career ending injury he got from working with him ONCE. Outside of the nWo as well Hart could’ve had some great matches and angles; Bret vs DDP, relive an old feud with Bret vs Kurt Hennig, put a stable together and have the hart foundation vs the 4 horsemen in a war games match, Bret vs Jericho and Bret vs Raven before they left. Bret vs Mysterio, Bret vs Eddie, and they never did have a proper blowoff for the storied Bret vs El Dandy feud they were hyping on the hotline so much….So many matches could’ve happened but didn’t because they made Bret a whiny heel with a broken leg. He was a good heel but a much better baby face and he came in with so much white hot heat, even if he didn’t get hurt like he did they wasted 3 years of his services they could’ve spent getting talent and the overall product over.

      Yup me too. This was when The Rock and Mankind rivalry was at it's height Austin vs Rock at Wrestlemania and the Ministry of Darkness Undertaker. Yet here was WCW beating the proverbial NWO angle to death and we the fans were supposed to be invested in that garbage? Lol

  • @AntonioJCRM
    @AntonioJCRM Před 3 lety +46

    Hulk and his damn ego killed WCW. He always had to be on top. This why Russo embarrassed him at Bash at Beach 00. 🤣🤣. I've notice while watching these reviews, McMahon controlled where Hulkamania was heading. That's why he really left in 93. He wanted to go somewhere where he had to be in control and WCW unfortunately gave him way too much lean way. When he came back 02, the left again because of his WM pay cut but it was really because he thought he was going to be in control in a roster with the likes of The Rock and Austin. Yeah Ok! Then 05 he wanted to go over Shawn, like wtf! That's why Shawn showed his ass how comedic he really look.

      The steroid scandal played a bigger part in Hogan leaving when he did but yes Vince didn't bow down to Hogan like Bischoff cuz he didn't need to. Yes he took his lumps in the subsequent years after Hogan, but eventually he righted the ship once Austin, Rock, DX, etc.. got big.

    The WWF knew (usually) when it was time to end an angle.
    Stone Cold vs. Mr. McMahon was THE feud of the Attitude Era. But it was running out of steam by mid-1999 especially after Vince was revealed as the "Greater Power".
    So they did the smart thing and ended the feud at Fully Loaded 1999.
    WCW didn't seem to understand that the nWo was passe after three years of it.

    • @anthonyanderson9303
      @anthonyanderson9303 Před 6 měsíci

      Exactly right. They kind of shifted over to the McMahon-Helmsley regime later that year with the Rock being the main protagonist, especially once Austin went out. Of course by the time you get to WM 17 and Austin shaking hands with McMahon, that was officially the end of an era.

    The most frustrating thing about the nWo (all of it's iterations) was that there was no obvious plan to end the angle. It was just one long regurgitated story which they tried to keep milking as long as possible.
    Eric on his podcast has talked about there being a beginning, middle, and end to angles before just as their are in any story. Well there was a beginning and a middle to the nWo---but no ending. WCW should have come together and finally ended the threat of the nWo once and for all. Hogan either going away for awhile and coming back as Hulkamania for "one last run" etc. But SOMETHING should have been done to end this and move on to other things.
    Eric has also admitted to being poor at match finishes---well this evident with all the run in and showed this. It's a shame because WCW NEEDED to "win" this war and they never did.
    Also Hogan continuing to wear black and white while supposedly the leader of the Wolfpac Elite :P

    One thing that always stood out during this time period and maybe a little before was that all the guys liked wearing their street clothes vs their wrestling gear. They liked showing off their Tommy Hilfiger jeans to look cool and were just there to deliver a promo. It was as if they didn't technically want to be there by not dressing in their wrestling gear. I don't know, maybe it was just me but that always felt off/odd.

    Unless I'm mistaken Hogan's creative control clause gave him the ability to say whether he wins or loses the match he's booked in, not the ability to determine who he's booked with. And sure I get that he more than likely got to choose who he worked with most of the time but he was a huge star even in 1999, I doubt they'd say no.

      Nope. There was a time for certain things to happen in wrestling. But in this era...they try too hard. They try too hard to make wrestling like the past instead of trying to give us straight good storylines, feuds & matches. And even in today's wrestling, they can't find that magic. That certain magic that made wrestling so good back in the day. It's sad really. Most wrestling fans are desperately holding on trying to find some good in wrestling. I mean, sure we got some good wrestlers, storylines, feuds and matches (every once in awhile) but nope, it will never be this good again.

      1. Internet has made everything accessible. Meaning storylines are leaked and so are returns
      2. Every storyline has been done. Its all re-hashed three times over now
      3. Wrestlers had to draw based on TV time. Now it’s just based on a brand name like WWE. Meaning, the wrestler had to buy u in with their promos and or ring storytelling not like it is where the wrestler is monotone/like a robot reading off a script word for word because they work for WWE so they don’t have to worry about having a good match or promo because they know the audience just buys in because of the WWE name
