Comic Sans - How Can Someone Hate a Font?

  • Comic Sans is easily one of the most disliked fonts. Before I used it in a recent video, I had no idea this was the case. This video takes a look into the font and attempts to explain the hatred.

      People are so determined to meme hate this font, still, in 2020, that they told someone not to use it when it was entirely appropriate.
      I didn't even notice it was CS because it matched so perfectly. It was a great decision and I hope this doesn't make him decide not to use a perfectly legitimate font in the future.

    • @racheln8563
      @racheln8563 Před 4 lety +32

      Little Red Exactly. People hate it because it’s considered hip to hate. It’s certainly not a great font to use if you want to be taken seriously, but it doesn’t deserve the loathing, either.

      @Drysart Před 6 lety +217

      Yeah, basically this. Dislike for it started with legitimate purpose because of the ubiquity of its early misuse, but today even if you use it in a perfectly valid context people will complain about it because they've heard other people complain about it and didn't understand the context, so they just picked up that it's something you point out and complain about always; and pointing it out signals to other people "in the know".
      That's why the original video had such directionless comments like simply saying "comic sans". They don't understand *why* they should hate it, they just do because other people do.

      Graphic Designer here!
      The video creator says they picked the Comic Sans because you thought it matched the Toys R Us logo but that’s where he went wrong. If you look at any poster, restaurant logo with a subtitle, or even a cleaning product’s packaging you’ll notice there are usually two fonts, one title or logo, and one for smaller text.
      You want to find two fonts that complement each other. What you have with comic sans is a font that draws attention to itself and therefore competes with the logo for Toys R Us. Comic Sans usually does outcompete and distract from the main font/logo, and this is why it’s problematic.

      boy do i hate blood flavoured ice cream. The taste is way too metallic and it feels like i just bit my lip. the ice cream is way too cold and if defrosted it could be used as evidence for a crime you never did. I hate this flavour also because of the fact that they use actual animal blood in the ice cream to make it authentic meaning that it is no longer vegetarian meaning that a lot of people cant even eat it. the ice cream is so trash that multiple law suits went against the company 'epic prankster 69' to ban it but every time they replied with these two lines: "if you dont like it, dont eat it" and "if you ban this flavour of ice cream, then it would be common sense to ban all meats in general." These replies are the reason why it still exists today even tho it shouldve been banned. many petittions and people sign to try to ban it but it always seems to pull through. I got salmonella least year because of this darn ice cream but because it couldnt be proven that it was the ice cream, I couldnt sue the darn company. Last week the CEO made a quote stating : "Blood flavoured ice cream is the future and many papers proof that it is actually healthy since it contains many minerals and not too many calories. It reduces a lot of blood waste that comes when an animal is killed for meat so actually reduces disease by estimates of up to 23 hundred thousand people. I will not ban this flavour till the end of my life.". This statement is utter trash since its so clear that all teh papers were clearly faked and he didnt make any links while he was speaking. In his website 'BLOOD ICREAM NICE.69.420.com' it sends to the papers previously mentioned and there was no clear evidence that proved the claims he was making was true after i read the first senten... I MEAN the entire paper. in conclusion, PLEASE BAN BLOOD FLAVOURED ICE CREAM.

Undertale is a good game, I wasn't part of its active community so I cant confirm this but I've heard that it was awful, but that still shouldn't make people hate the game or the font used in the game. Just because you dislike the community that supports the game doesn't mean you should hate the game or things associated with it, if you really dislike them then just play the game and forget about them, leave them to do their own thing and don't worry about them.

    I hope this doesn't get lost in the sea of comments and you read it. I'm a web dev and it is a bit different from where I come from. Up until the last few years, getting fonts to display on a website consistently could be a pain in the ass. Browsers are only capable of displaying and rendering fonts they have access to. Nowadays there a number of ways to load a font into your site to render text but that wasn't always the case. There are VERY few fonts that are ubiquitous to everyone's computer, be it mac, pc, linux, etc, that can be used to show a site consistently so that what I am seeing is what you should be seeing. Today we can specify font files directly to the browser and it will render (for the most part) identically. But back in the 90s and even early 2000s this wasn't available or practical. We only had maybe a dozen or so fonts that were cross-system compatible (especially once you take into account different versions of OS, browser, etc). Even then, you run into issues where fonts like Arial/Helvetica have licensing attached to the OS even though they are almost identical. This sort of stuff plagued the early web. For some reason, Comic Sans was one of those fonts that was available to use, and it was unique. What ended up happening is that this font got drastically over-used back then for all sorts of terrible, super antiquated websites. Comic Sans + animated gif background type sites. It got attached to the stigma that using this font means you don't know what you're doing, and is seemingly perpetuated in to this day. Enter the new era of web devs, teenagers and 20-something year olds that have meme-ified this because their elder counterparts berate and belittle this font, and you just have a cultural continuation reminiscent of those dark times.

      What a great comment! Thank you!
      BTW, I used Comic Sans for the tail number on my little airplane. It's a "joke" plane, an experimental homebuilt made for flying low and slow and landing at back-country strips or the occasional pasture. The characters, which only have to be 3 1/3 in high on an experimental, just didn't look right in block lettering, nor in the "official" fonts, nor especially in the strongly raked, "windswept" fonts common on certificated aircraft. If I'd known just how retarded, square and utterly gauche the Comic Sans would make me look in the discriminating eyes of the Web community, I'd probably have chosen something else -- but here I am, years in and no complaints yet -- another demonstration, if any were necessary, that fliers are the most tolerant, generous, and generally wonderful folks anywhere!

    I’m a writer and have always liked toying with fonts. Times New Roman while basic, is efficient and professional. Arail is like Times New Romans’ cousin. Comic Sans is more childish and is something I only use when making story outlines no one will ever see. It’s similar to Trebuchet MS, but just a tad bit too squished. When you’ve been raised to pick fonts in Microsoft and or move to Google Docs, the styles just pop out more. Everyone has hated this font as far back as I could remember, but at least it isn’t Papyrus.

    When you get to document publishing, you learn the subtle difference between "font" and "code page." (However, they are usually mashed together as the generic term "font.")
    The "font" describe HOW the letters are drawn. The "code page" describe WHICH letters are drawn.
    So, in MS Word, type into a document "ABCDabcd"
    As he shows, there are different fonts (generic term) to chose from. Most of them show the letters as "ABCDabcd" just drawn differently. So all use the same base "code page" but are different "fonts"
    Now look at fonts MT Extra or Symbol. They display the letters not as English "ABCDabcd" but as totally different characters. (Symbol is basically the Greek alphabet.) These are actually different "code pages" because the displayed symbols are different

      Most of the people using Comic Sans don't do it appropriately. Its design is childish and should only really be used when it's concerning childish things (like Toys R Us, which Company Man can get away with this time).
      I sometimes help my aunt (who is a teacher, we get along well) with grading essays and 80% of the essays are written in Comic Sans, even when concerning serious topics like World War 2 and slavery, which certainly shouldn't be accompanied with Comic Sans.
      The main problem I have with Comic Sans is mostly that nobody uses it appropriately (which was what I meant with crappy design, sorry if that wasn't so clear).

    To truly understand the hate for Comic Sans, you have to go back in time to the mid 1990s when the WWW was brand new, and everybody had a web page on Geocities, or Angelfire, or some such.
    Back in those days, Comic sans was one of the only sans serif fonts that came stock with Windows. And of the few sans serif fonts available, it was the only one which had the charming informal look to it.
    What happened was that Comic Sans became way *overused*. It was everywhere online. And it became associated with a lot of other really terrible web design choices like garish background tiles, unreadable font colors, blinking text, horrible clip art, etc etc.
    As the WWW became more sophisticated in the late 1990s, suddenly free fonts became available online, and opened up a whole universe of fonts, including sans serif fonts. Some were good for ordinary text, and others were very good for comic-book type uses. All were much better than Comic Sans.
    So, by around 1998 or 99, anybody still using comic sans online just looked like an out of touch buffoon, same as if you still had a Geocities web page with a "guestbook" and a bad animated clip-art gif of a mailbox as the link to your e-mail. Just... embarassing.
    That's where the stigma came from, and it will never go away, so long as those early internet days remain in living memory.
