Glad to hear someone concerned with the "legal" conundrum that are truck campers. I've considered one of these 5500 many times as the overkill solution. May settle for the 4500 to keep some ride civility and the wonderful wide track (small turning radius) front end.
@@kenmunozatmmrrailroad6853 the problem with the 4500 is at least in the case of the Ford F450 it is still only rated at 14000 lb GVWR. With my current 2014 dually mega cab Limited when I weighed the truck with the camper and all my gear I was at 15,300 pounds . Once I add my 5-person family and all my dog's I am at 16300 pounds. I thought this was my dream truck and would work for me. I am now driving it with a Thule rack and my 12 foot aluminum boat and getting almost 16 miles to the gallon which is pretty incredible for a 9000 pound dually with 410 gears. The best I ever got with the camper on it was maybe 10 MPG but you know it is a towing Beast. I'm a 20 foot 10 in without the camper and when I add my forefoot tow hitch stinger that puts me at almost 25 ft long. The truck did it just fine but I did sag a little bit that the airbags helped with. The liability is the big concern so the camper now sits off my truck. the arctic fox 990 is one awesome house that you can carry along with you. I am seriously considering either a used 5500 crew cab to get me by the next couple of years till they come out with better self-driving technology on the new limited's and if I go the route of the 5500 it will have a 12 foot bed with total tool boxes everywhere and maybe have two to 3 foot of empty space in front of the camper where I could put a cage for the dogs so that they could look in the back window at us. With the thousand pound flatbed that I would build with maybe a dump feature and all the tool boxes and tools and motorcycles I bet you I would get up to somewhere between 18000 and 19000 lb. This would be comparable if not better to the awesome Overland Vehicles you see them building that they want over $200,000 for. I could get way up into any national forest in California that I want to go fish at and hang out and Camp. The only problem is I may be with the camper on about 26 foot overall length. Parking anywhere in town at a Scenic tourist spot could be a bit of a challenge. Thanks for your input. there are so many people that think just because they have a crew cab 8ft bed that they can haul one of these campers. When they give you the weight of these campers they do not include all the options such as water propane generator refrigerator or batteries. I even hauled this same camper with my 2006 Ram 3500 Dually. That truck GVWR is 1200 lb and although it did handle it and not break the suspension it did Kill the transmission Overdrive at about 55,000 miles.

Wow... I thought only “I” thought this hard about this! Seriously, your story is verbatim exactly how I’ve felt in wanting to go the camper route.
If it helps, there’s a guy on CZcams (I’ve saved for reference) who’s gone full tilt with the 5500. I think you’d like what he’s done here. Point of note: The spring packs (I know you’ve seen these things) are massive and it was starting to rattle his unit apart. He’s got some insights for solutions you might want to hear. Let me know if you’d like the CZcams episode.
@@kenmunozatmmrrailroad6853 yes if you could give me the name I was Channel I can look them up. So do you think even with a seven to eight thousand pound load on a 5500 it would still ride rough. Maybe going to a air ride suspension would be the ticket?
Does that truck come with 400 hp high output Cummins and 1,000 lb-ft Aisin transmission?
I think it can be optioned with one but typically these Medium dutys are de-rated to prolong engine life!

Never talked about towing capacities. That is what people get a 5500 for.
It's all dependent on what flatbed you get on the back as weight effects towing capability!

A 3500 Limited is already $ 78,379 plus Tax . People pay NO attention to this CLOWN doing this video . Was just some jerk who started filming at Chicago auto show. Has no affiliation with RAM on prices what so ever.
@@kodyadams5589 You go pretty hard on the guy. I went to ram 🐏 trucks, went to build, selected chassis cab and it list Ram 3500 chassis cab limited 4x2 starts at $56,710. Maybe the guy got confused with chassis cab and didn't catch that it is a 3500 on the build and price. Its still a decent review.
