  • Set in the beautiful village of Spofforth, this ruin was a fortified manor house, dating back to the 11th century. The land was favoured to William de Percy, a friend of William the Conqueror, and became the main family seat throughout the ages.
The original manor house was built on a small outcrop overlooking the village, and remained until the 13th century. The family were granted a licence to fortify the manor house in 1308, and to start a Friday market in the town.
During the War of the Roses, the Percy family sided with the House of Lancaster and, following the battle of Towton in 146, the Earl of Warwick set fire to the manor house and plundered the local village. It stayed in ruins for almost 100 years, finally being restored by Henry de Percy in 1559. The family however had already shifted their seat to Alnwick in Northumberland so the manor house was occupied by a live-in steward until 1606.
The castle was later again reduced to ruin during the English civil war.
