The Northstar is notorious for the purge line clogging up. Bought a 02 DeVille from older guy and had nothing but water in it. Was getting hot on the way home. Next day I Used compressed air to blow purge line and the coolant purge bolt was plugged up. Was rusted and had some sealant inside it. After cleaning it installed it. Topped off with Dex-Cool. Has not overheated since. Clear purge line and purge bolt before you think it's a head gasket issue even though this engine is know for the fine threaded head bolts pulling out of block.

Here's a more up to date method that I used to clear it the cooling system properly.
On my 98 DeVille I just pulled out the upper and lower radiator hoses and let it drain that way. I took a garden hose, stuck it in my upper radiator hose and flushed water from the top of the radiator to the bottom and waited for the water to run clear. Then I put the garden hose in the lower radiator hose and reverse flushed it so it went from the bottom of the radiator out the upper radiator hose and I let that run clear.
Then I removed the reservoir cap, stuck the garden hose down into it and flushed all of the coolant out of the engine and it ejects out of the port that the upper radiator hose connects to. I let that run clear. Then I put the garden hose right up to the port that the upper radiator hose connects to and blasted water in reverse through the engine until it overflowed the reservoir and I let that run clear.
Then I took out the thermostat, put the reservoir cap back on and off the garden hose into the upper port and flushed it out of the lower port.
Then (THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT) I put the upper and lower radiator hoses back on but I didn't clamp them down. I took off the purge line which is directly above the upper radiator hose. It's a narrow and small little hose with small clamps. Clean out that hose and make sure the small outputs on both ends of the port are clear of debris. There Purge line is very easy to get clogged up and when it does it'll overheat your car every time. Stick the garden hose down into the reservoir and blast water through until it sprays out of the front and back of the purge line with full force. Put them Purge line hose back on and clamp it down.
Drain all of the water out of the radiator and the engine. I just blow through the upper radiator hose until it's clear. And then I put a disconnected small tube or hose on to the reservoir opening and blow air into it until all the water is out of it.
Take a jug of coolant and pour it down into the upper radiator hose until it's coming out of the lower hose until it's flowing free with no bubbles and quickly jam the lower radiator hose into the lower port. Now the radiator is full. Keep the upper radiator hose filled to the brim and keep it held up so it doesn't overflow.
Then start filling the reservoir up with coolant until it's flowing freely through the upper radiator port and there are no bubbles coming out. Then jam the upper radiator hose into that port. Clamp the hoses down, fill the reservoir up half way and you're good to go.
Start the car up, let it run with the reservoir cap off, squeeze the upper radiator hose continually to burp the air out. After about 20 minutes of this, put more coolant if it's lowered down some and keep it filled too the hallway point. Put the cap back on and let it keep running while revving it up to 3000 RPM. This helps Purge the air out some more. Monitor the temps and make sure the fan turns on and off at 222 and 213 degrees. It should bounce back and forth between these 2 temps while idling if everything is down correctly.
Doing it this way will make sure that everything is cleaned out and not clogging anything up. The Purge line is very important to keep cleared and it's very easy to do. This one small like will overheat your car in a heartbeat if it's plugged up.

Try blowing through the overflow line from engine when cold.if you cant then the fitting into the block is plugged.its located around the water pump and has a 1/8 th inch hole which plugs easily.if plugged then you will get fluid boiling out the overflow cap

Since owning new in '96, my fans never came on in my '96. If you love your Cadillac, and it's older than 15 years, put a new radiator, surge, and waterpump in. Coolant should be drained and refilled every 4 years regardless of mileage.

I fixed my overheating problem on my 98 DeVille. I had a bad coolant cap and the system was totally clogged up. So I drained the system by taking off the upper and lower radiator hoses, then I flushed water through the upper hose, into the top of the radiator and out through the lower hose. then I back flushed the radiator by running the garden hose through the bottom radiator hose and waited for it to start pouring out the upper radiator hose. I waited for all of the coolant to wash out. then I put the garden hose up against the port where the upper radiator hose connects to and blasted the garden hose through that. it pushed out all of the coolant through the entire engine and out the reservoir tank. I let that run clear and then put the garden hose down the reservoir tank and let it flow out the upper radiator hose port. do this and let everything flow out until it's clear. then reconnect the bottom hose. then take a jug of radiator cleaning fluid and pour it down into the upper radiator hose so that it goes straight in to the radiator and fill the rest of it up with water and reattach the upper radiator hose. then fill the reservoir up with water and start the engine with the cap off. squeeze the upper radiator hose to burp the air out of the system and fill it up with water and put the cap on and let it get up to operating temp. then let it sit for a couple of hours. drain the system by removing the upper and lower radiator hoses and flush and back flushed with water again. do this several times until you see nothing but clear liquid coming out. then fill it with coolant and you're done. I fill the radiator directly through the upper hose first. then replace that hose and then fill the reservoir. doing this lowered my operating temperature by 25 degrees and now it doesn't overheating.

Eric Monaco Mine still kept overheating until I discovered the purge line and found out it was clogged up tight. I blasted it with the garden hose set on JET, stuck a thin long screwdriver in there and dislodged the clog, blasted the garden hose down into the reservoir and out each side of the purge line separately until it came out full force. Now it runs at the perfect temperature!

  • @edwardcoyle5425
    @edwardcoyle5425 Před 5 lety +4

It seems these engines have difficulty purging air or of system.
The purge line is supposed to remove air but it works slowly if the radiator had been drained or water is low for other reasons.
After I replaced the radiator I would pull the purge line at the pump (after removing reservoir cap) and would let air out. I did this twice a day for 4 days until no more air.
Good thing I only was driving 10 miles.
Maybe, something else is wrong not letting the air out. Reply if you have an idea.

My 2000 DTS was still running hot after I replaced the Rad. I figured I had air in the system, I place the car so the front was higher, ran the car with the rad, cap off and heater on. I kept watch on engine temp , and it was up there . Then a big burst of air blew out of the overflow. Right away the temp came right down and the car's been great since.

the hollow bolt with the little hole in it is to small, drill out to 3/16 or a little larger , it is so small it causes coolent flo to slo down that it allows it to build up sludge an plug up , this bypass takes cooloer water from radiator back to over flo bottle an bleed off air, air traped in flo seystem will cause a block an coolent cannot flo an cause a heat problem. the head bolts are poping loose because gm taped the holes with threads to mony per inch an to thin,an not enough so retaping holes with heaver threads an more threads to hole the bolts will not breake loose an bolt hold, aluminumm is a soft metal to begin with an whem you heat iyt up it gets weaker ,the problem is in the engneareing design, . i drilled my hallow bolt out , no more over heateing, i use to work for a gm dealer.

Jerry Henkel I saw no smoke from tail pipe. It was just the cap and the blocking of the part that I pointed out. Paid 600, sold for $2500, after research on this Cadillac good riddance. High parts, special tools, and terrible mechanical issues. Stay away from Cadillac Mercedes BMW of the 90s early 2000, example the bmw 745i new was 60,000 in 2002, due to the catastrophic mechanical issues todays blue book is less than $4000, mint condition same with the others I mentioned above.
