- According to Prometric guidelines for the nurse aide state exam, this is a step-by-step demonstration video for measuring and recording a resident’s respirations. This skill is one of the 21 testable skills on the Texas State CNA Exam. Remember to include indirect care with this skill. You MUST not tell the client during your test that you are taking their respirations. For this skill, you can state, “I am taking your pulse or vital signs”. This is a very important point.
Dr. Lee is a fantastic instructor! I just finished my 3-wk CNA classes with her and just recently passed the state written exam. Hope I'll pass the skills test, too. She's so helpful with her students and always finds ways to go the extra mile to help them pass the state exams, like these super detailed, up-to-date vids. I love her! Thank you so much, Dr. Lee! ~Evelyn
Hello Evelyn, Thanks for the nice words.
Where is this school in Houston please?
@@KM-rj6bu Hello, I am located near the intersection of Beechnut and Highway 59.
Dr. Lee I've been using your videos now for 3 months and we just love them and you!! We are a class of CNA students in Rochester, NY
Wow, thank you! That means a lot. Take care.
I failed my exam today because I said end of skill before recording my results 😭 the instructor was extremely intimidating & my nerves got the best of me. It does make me sad that something like that can cause me to fail my entire exam but at least now I won’t forget that step next time.
Hello Laurluvs, It is hard taking an exam when an evaluator is watching your every move. Most students get nervous and it is easy to forget things. I am so sorry that happen to you. I have faith you will succeed next time. Take care.
Thank you for this skill video and the information on respirations . I went to your school in 2018 and received my CNA certification.
I'm just coming back since the
pandemic and excited for my recertification. You inspire me so much Dr. LEE 💕
Glad it was helpful! Welcome back to healthcare.
Thank you so much Dr. Lee. I passed my exam yesterday (ROM-hip, knee, ankle; respirations; and dressing a resident with a weak arm) and I truly believe your videos boosted my confidence!!!
Wonderful Gabrielle! Welcome to the healthcare profession.
Ooh my goodness someone with the same skills as me. And I passed.
@@faridaagot8691 Congratulations!
@@gabriellesapp137 Thank you my dear.

You are welcome Brittany Anne.
Thank you very much
You are welcome
I'm loving these videos Dr. Lee thank you so much!! I wanted to know if using a stop watch feature on your smartwatch is acceptable for the texas state exam?
Hello, You can use any watch that is not digital.
Gracias por sus videos y su explicación hay algún día en especial que pongan los mismos skills
You are welcome.
Hi Dr. Lee, I have a question. On test day would we be allowed to place a paper towel on our partner’s abdomen for taking respirations, like it was demonstrated in class? I’ve been practicing, binge watching your videos, reviewing my notes and counting down to my skills exam one week from today!! Thank you for being such a wonderful instructor ❤️you and your sister are fantastic ladies!
Yes, absolutely you can place a towel on the patient's abdomen.
Always love your demo, Nice one , but ma, can they ask us to measure B/P or Body Temperature for vital sign
Hello Barakat, The only vital signs that Prometric will ask up to take are the pulse and respirations.
The blood pressure and the temperature are not tested with Prometric.
Hello. your videos are so helpful, I have my exam on the 9th of nov.
Could you please demonstrate, provide mouth care to a resident who has a
denture, according to Prometric guidelines
Hello V.CD.C, I plan to video the oral care skills this week.
Are we allowed to touch the stomach or place the paper towel on stomach to count for this skill although they aren’t allowed to know we’re doing respirations or will that cause us to fail?
Hello Morgan, Yes, you are allowed to place a paper towel or touch the abdomen if you ask the patient for permission.
Hello dr.lee I’m still going over your videos to stay prepared, but I hope everything is okay with you. We in Houston was hit with a winter storm hope you are okay too!!!
Hello Jazzmin, Thank you for thinking about me. I am in Houston. I was without lights for 4 days. I just got lights less than 24 hours ago. I am still without water. How are you doing?
I had to close my school for the week and stop all testing at my school due to the water issue.
@@txcnaskills2599 sorry for the late replying, wow that’s unfortunate, but I was okay. We did lose water right before the storm ended. Glad you okay.
@@txcnaskills2599 for some reason I got the notification of your reply but the comments were disable. But as of now I can comment on your videos. Thanks for responding
Dr Lee. I noticed when you started the count for respirations, that you were not even looking at the client's chest. Could you be off some respirations?
Hello Martha, I don't stay looking at the person's chest. I glance at the clock or my watch and look at the client out of the corner of my eye.
Why you said that your going to check her respiration’s and then the vital, you can say that your going to check her vital at the very first place
Hello Dr lee! For this skill do I take pulse and respirations for a duration of two min or the instructor would just tell you to take one?
Hello Jasmine, The pulse is taken for one full minute. The respiration is also taken for one full minute.
@@txcnaskills2599 Try hank you so much
What is the respiratory rate? How to count it? Is it not 60/100 Normal vital sign?
Hello Glendalyn, The normal respiration rate is between 12-20. The student will count the inhalation and exhalation as one breath.
In the beginning you said not to tell client your taking respirations but you said it anyway😂 just wanted to point that out!!
Hello Antwana, Thank you for pointing that out. The student SHOULD NOT tell the client they are taking the respirations.
will the patient be laying down for the test? Or does it not matter when taking respirations?
Hello Nerm210, The state does not require the patient to be in a certain position for respirations.
@@txcnaskills2599 do you know what the grade is to pass the skills test?
I did this skill today but I documented 23. Would this fail me? I was told that if it's above 25 then it's abnormal.
Hello Tochukwu, The normal respiration rate for adults is between 12-20. The evaluator will take the respiration rate of the client with you. In order to pass this skill you MUST be within 2 numbers (Plus or Minus) from what the evaluator got. Therefore it does not matter if you got a normal or abnormal number. What matters is that you are close to the evaluator. I hope this makes sense. Take care.
Is there another way to see if the person is breathing to count with some people I can’t tell when their chest moves up and down
Hello, I have my students place a paper towel on the abdomen and watch the abdomen go up and down as another method.
I am challenging the board soon I want to know what's a good way to know you washed your hands for 60 seconds
I teach my students to buy a watch with a second hand and to keep the watch on while washing their hands. By the way, it's 20 seconds for the hand and wrist wash, then go to the fingers and under the nail beds.
Thank you Dr Lee, but I have a question.
Can I take respiration on the client's pulse
Hello, If the evaluator asks you to take a respiration on a client, then you MUST take a respiration. If you take a pulse instead of the respiration you will NOT PASS the skill.
Now, with that being said, pay close attention to my next comments.
Prometric placed a note in the instructions for the respiration skill that says, DO NOT TELL THE CLIENT YOU ARE TAKING THE RESPIRTION. Therefore, I teach my students to tell the client when testing that you are there to take VITAL SIGNS. After saying that, the student should proceed to take the respirations. I hope this is clear. Take care.
❤❤❤❤
Thanks for the love.
So you hv to simulate wash hands twice???
1 before documenting and 2 the last thing b4 skill is complete
Hello, You have to simulate handwashing before touching a patient and at the end of the skill. So, yes for this skill, handwashing is simulated twice.
❤
Thanks so much
I do not understand what you did Was respiration? I have to look the patient chest to see up and down or you have one other way to count the respiration in the patient’’s wrist?
Hello, I can understand why this skill can be confusing. First, Prometric tells us in the instructions NOT to tell the patient that you are taking their respirations. Therefore, a candidate is allowed to state, "I am taking your pulse" or " I am taking your vital signs." This is in the instructions from the state.
When you tell a patient that you are taking their respiration, the patient may change their breathing pattern and therefore, the healthcare worker will not have a true result. I hope this makes sense to you. Take care.
I noticed that it was taking respiratory, but it was done as if it was pulse reading.
Hello, In real life the healthcare worker would not tell the client they are taking the respiration.
On test Day the paper ask the minutes.
Hello Marcia, the respirations are taken for one minute.
You didn't do the respiration Dr. Lee. You did the pulse. You weren't looking at the patient's chest for the respiration.
I can look at the chest or the abdomen when counting the respiration. Both areas of the body will move with respiration. Some people will look at the shoulders moving. There is no rule that the healthcare worker has to look at the chest ONLY.
I want to be a class instructor.
I believe in going for your dreams. So, go for it.
This video is incorrect. For respirations you have to look at your patient the whole time, this was partial apical pulse. I get that you don't tell the patient what you are doing on this skill but you can't count respirations looking back at the clock, that is impossible. Just my thoughts
Hello, the average nurse does not star at the patient the whole time while taking a client's respiration. When will the nurse divert his/her eyes to the clock or watch?
The video is correct.
