  • Why do some people have so much hate for ebikes, even eMTBS? We recently rode iconic Highway 30 between Hood River OR and Mosier OR on eBikes from Oregon eBikes and ran into someone that said eBikes don’t count. Please Like, Subscribe and Share!

Is it cheating if you take the chair lift up the mountain? In fact, is it cheating to have a derailleur? Or a carbon fiber frame? Maybe it’s cheating when you get in your car and drive to where you want to ride... Me, outside riding an ebike is not “cheating”. It’s just me being outside doing my thing. As my wise sister-in-law says, “you do you and I’ll do me.”

I'm an long time avid cyclist. I've raced road bikes back in the 80's. I'm now 67 and riding less because of health issues but recently decided to buy a class 1 e-mtb. Best decision I've made in years. I ride for longer durations, further, see more beautiful scenery and get a better work out. I can also decide how much effort I want to put into my ride instead of the terrain dictating. I don't care what other purists may think or say, eventually they will get one too.

Why a person should enjoy the ride with an ebike and NOT enjoying the ride on a real bike? This is the question you, ebike users, should answer... But I just could imagine the answer: doing efforts and riding slowly on hard trails destroy your enjoyment. Losers...

@@BICIeCOMPUTERconGabriele On an ebike you are able to set the intensity of the workout while enjoying the desired pace you want to. I currently ride a 40 pound single gear springer 40 miles a week and it can suck mightily. I would prefer to get more juice from my squeeze after riding that bike for a year and am upgrading to a ebike. I will now have more range and vastly superior control over my exercise. If gaining that much is losing, then sign me up.

Right on brother! My simple response is: “ Are you happy, are you enjoying yourself? “ Because, I am. I am out riding. I am getting fresh air, exercise and I can contemplate more beautiful sites and scenery without being totally strained. I can adjust how much exercise I get. When my butt gets sore or my legs feel tired I can just twist the throttle
and have a break. E bikes create the best of both worlds combined into one. Cycling combined with some light motorcycling! What is not to love about that?

Thanks for your vids man. I used to ride my Cannondale 1997ish Super VSL MTB every day. Then I let work and health issues get in my way gained a ton of weight and just left it to collect dust in the garage. Stumbled across your weight loss vid you made and it kindled something in me. Took my 17 year old son with me to go to a bike shop as I was too self conscious to tell them I was getting the old bike tuned up for my fat ass. Zak, my son, and I were checking out bikes and talking about some of your vids and right there I let spontaneity take control. Got the ole Cannondale tuned up and gave it to my son. Bought myself a simple Kona Lanai hard tail. Next day Zak and I hit the trails. Got 7 miles in the first day, which after almost 10 years off riding made me happy. We have been riding every for almost two months now and my life is changed. Thanks for your vids, for what it is worth you inspired me to shut up and ride (again) and it feels amazing.

eBikes have made it possible for me to bike again. At this time I've had 9 surgeries to reconstruct both legs and still have 1 or 2 to go. I've been a bike rider/motorcycle rider since I was about 7 I'm now 63. After not being able to ride hills or even the slightest incline for the last ten years the smile and sheer enjoyment of riding a bicycle came back in my into my life last weekend. I rode a 20" pedal assist eBike from CSC Motorcycles. Saturday was a 5 mile decline ride and then the 5 mile incline ride back home. I feel like a kid again, I never could have made it home on a regular bicycle. The next day was a 7 mile ride around the neighborhood. Did I feel bad because " it really didn't count." Not in any way shape or form, I feel alive again and look forward to many ,many more days like that. My eBike has given me more smiles to the miles. PS none of the surgeries were due to a m/c accident

That's part of why we LOVE riding to begin with, it's not like the majority of us are ever pro level riders but for the majority of us, if we ride and it left a memory, a smile, a scar, whatever... then it counts bro, it always counts bro!

I have found that I actually cycle more and at a consistant momentum. The E Bike allows me to push myself further and for longer and it is soooooooooo much more fun. Message to Pboy, who is counting? Just out to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. I am shopping for an ebike not because I am lazy, but I think I will get out and ride more. For simple errands where I don't need a car but maybe a bit too far on a regular bike I would ebike it. Even in the winter sometimes.
I have done a motorcycle ride across Canada for the last 3 years and I challenge my self to do 1000 miles the first day.
Now I am thinking about ebiking it. Of course it will take way longer but doable. On a regular bike I just don't think I would have the time. I would probably ship the bike and fly back, but still a decent adventure.
Hats off the the ones who can power every where on their bike, but no need to look down on us ebikers. We are all enjoying the same fresh air and sunshine.
Boy that highway looks sweet no matter how one is moving on it. You were pretty polite to Pboy, I might have bit my tongue if there were ladies or children present. Otherwise I might have used a few choice words.
    Cheers

Nice edit and important topic. I’ve been riding MTBs for over 20 years. My wife would come out occasionally but while she is fit, didn’t like the grind and the fact she was always behind on the climbs. Bought her an EMTB 2 months ago. Game Changer! We now ride about 100kms a week together. As she is getting stronger, she rarely gets out of Eco or Trail mode and my fitness has gone up a notch trying to keep up on 40-50km rides (and she now loves going uphill). We are in the US for a couple of months visiting our kids in college this fall and her first question was...”where can we ride bikes”. Not easy as the rules for E bikes seem to change by state but think we have found quite a few rides. My son even takes the E bike when we go to our local bike park so they are good for free riding as well. As you said...just shut up and ride.

My first Ebike experience brought me here.!
I took my wife and 2 friends out on Ebike rentals this weekend. Our plan was to sight see around some mountain towns, it wasn’t set up as our workout for the day. All 3 riders are novice and unable to ride an elevated 12 mile round trip without killing themselves. We left Silverthorne Co and biked up to Frisco on an Ebike classified trail for some beers at a micro brew. It was the best weather and scenery that you could ask for on a vacation.
Little did we know that oncoming road bikers would yell at us the entire trip. We only passed one biker from behind and he was on peddling slowly while talking on his cell phone. Being an educated Mtb biker I had stopped my group on several occasions to give the right of way to the oncoming road bikes. I kept my entire group in our lane and I protected the local riders buy nearly stopping on all blind corners so that we did not steer out of our tight lanes. I was so pissed at the way we were treated that I was ready to fight. Funny how they would all yap but they kept riding when we invited them back to discuss the matter.
Anyway, we had a blast! Beers were cold and the town people were great! We plan on going back next year, hope the haters slack up some or find some paved bike trails away from the tourism. By the way, I’m pretty sure the visitor’s tax dollars maintain those trails. I thought the biking community was stronger than this?
Enjoyed you video! I feel better after watching it.

Wife and I love ours. Starting off with the Ecotric Leopards this year. Already did the limiter delete and upgraded the rear freewheel to an 11/28 to match the top speed. I am an Engineer and am enjoying learning about the equipment.....difference between cadence sensor and torque sensor, motor manufactures, batteries. Probably go to the Cyrusher Ranger and Flex next year. It is all about getting out. When you want to cruise and look around, you cruise and look around, when you want to wind it up to the top speed to cover distance....you go! Top of the list all, get out, be safe, and respect the property you are on.

A young monk and an older monk were walking from one town to the other, and there on the banks of a small stream was a young woman fretting. "I can't cross the river, I'll get my gown wet and i have to get to the celebration." The young monk was about to offer to carry her across when the old monk said "Get on my shoulders, I will get you across," and they both crossed the stream. The old monk set her down gingerly and after she thanked them, they went on their way. After an hour of walking in silence, the young monk asked the elder "Why did you get to carry the young woman across the stream when I am stronger!"
"Because I was able to set her down. Apparently you are still carrying her." And they continued on.

Your response would be spot on if the only issue was how we should respond to people who don't share our choices. But the real problem is more intrusive than that. These people influence public policy about where e-bikes can be used. In that sense their irrational aversion to e-bikes is more than a simple disapproval, it can transform into a movement to limit our rights. Most trails are on taxpayer supported land. All taxpayers should have equal access to the trails. If the haters have their way, we won't be able to ride on "their" trails, and that's messed up.

I had been using a Trek Verve 2 disc the last two years and now I got my first Ebike a Specialized Como 3.0. So far I am enjoying the ride on it. It isn't cheating in my opinion as we still have to pedal to make it go. Only now we can make the ride a little bit faster and not wonder why the hell we went so far from home.

My wife bought a cruiser ebike for riding while we RV in various spots. Riding hers convinced me to get an emtb. I bought a good brand and I love it. I'm riding trails that I rode in my 30's. I would not have got back into riding without an ebike. I live in a very hilly suburb on top of a hill and in lockdown I took up cycling again with an ebike. I only use the battery when I am on a hill I cannot ride up. In Australia we are on the EU pedalec standard and I find I am working all the time it is just that when I am on a steep hill I have some assistance. I only need to charge the battery a couple of times a week. We are only allowed throttle control to 6km/hr which is good to get started. Actually, I have my order in for a Brompton which is a push bike, so I will see how I go. I am 74 and do not produce a lot of watts.

E-bikes are great: 1. If you have an injury they allow you control of how much stress you put on a recovering muscle or joint. 2. People with heart issues can get out and start a very beneficial adjustable exercise program. 3. With an Ebike you can haul larger trailers and haul heavier loads this gets you using the bike more for daily chores. The complaining peddler often has there spandex on a bit too tight.

I would be happy with a battery half the size (due to weight issues) and a motor mechanism is much smaller - if the the Tour de France road bikes can have motors and batteries put in with those small tube sizes, you know the manufacturers can make the e-mtbikes lighter and less hefty.

He angrily yelled back at me as I passed "hey, that's cheating!". Howdy. Great riding footage. I am 68 and started riding an eBike 10 years ago, commuting to and from work. I used a Bionx kit, which worked great and you can take the battery into the office for charging. After a few years my fitness improved enough that I sold the eBike and started riding a plain old pedal bike. A little slower, but I get some serious exercise puffing up the hills.
Regular bikes and eBikes should all be welcome on the roads and trails. The only thing I would say to eBikers and also to the spandex guys is please slow down a little on smaller trails and bike paths... a big guy on a heavy bike going fast can be a danger to walkers and other bikers.
