Hello and welcome to Cambridge Pinstriping and Airbrushing and...

Having fun with painting and custom builds, mostly motorcycles but you can find here anything else that is or can be turned into a good time!
Thank you very much for taking the effort. almost no tutorial video's out there for the Ktm SD 990 200x (i have a 2006). Keep up the good work..!!
50 years of riding bikes and doing all the work myself... and I still learn stuff: Tinfoil! Why did I never consider that?? Brilliant. Cheers!!
haha, simple things
aluminium foil!good tip!
Thanks for that Macki. I am somewhat embarrassed to admit it but I have just now realized that one of my bikes I had for 5 years actually has a dry sump system as well. I now understand why it has 3 drain bolts and why there was hardly any oil coming out of the sump plug. Idiot me, anyway I know now thanks to you bringing up the subject...don't tell anyone.
rsm8
Your secret is safe with me brother. I guess changing a little bit of oil is better than no oil at all :)
Good advice sir....learnt the hard way about 35 years ago on my old CB550K1. Cracked the sump pan through overtightening drain plug🙈 what a horrible feeling. Bought a torque wrench shortly after
That's bad...but as you said, learn on mistakes. Never again...well almost never ;)
Great video. I’m hopeless on the tools but this was brilliant. I just got the R version of your bike. Love it
Great to hear!
@@MackieBassNice😉👍You have Rottwailer air intake on it?
Best guide on CZcams for lc8' oil change. Thanks!!!
Glad it helped!
Great vid Mackie.... I have the smt990 10 years now and it still makes me smile. I use Castrol racing about 30 pounds and it's always been good. Plus 1 for mid price oil 😁👍
O! How is the SMT??? IM Looking to possibly e change to SMT 990 at some point? Please let me know your experience with it?
@@MackieBass I bought it new, ktm heavily reduced price when the updated abs smt got released. I done the usual, put end cans and a k&n filter on it and uploaded a new ECU map to suit. No engine problems in 50000 miles, and I have done the valves twice.
Set suspension as per the book and I am loving Avon 3d xm tyres at 140 a pair they are great.
Everytime I service it, I call it a bastard and I am selling it....then I ride it and I smile again, and forget what a pain in the ass servicing is... check out ktm smt forum for info but not much goes wrong as it ain't all electronics and sensors.
Only problem is ....i dont know what to get next ...so for now I keep it 😉👍
@@rangoonruns happy days! The only thing I'd exchange my superduke would be...newer superduke, or the SMT / SMR. The SMR is rare as chicken with teeth, so SMT may be an option. Time will tell.
@@MackieBass if it's running ok just paint urban camouflage...that would look sick ....may be you can find someone to paint it for you LOL.🤣🤣🤣🤣 keep the vids coming your hard work and dedication is appreciated by so many 😁👍
Great job- thanks you! Just joined the Orange Mafia with a near mint '08 990 & this is exactly what I needed. You have another sub-cheers!
Nice one! You'll love it! Fantastic bike!
Thanks guy ! ✌🏻 of 🇫🇷! My next motorbike will be 1290! I fell in love of twice cylinder since 5years ago with the 990 and it’s impossible to go back 😎🤙🏻
I Like the 1290 but I LOVE the 990. The Ultimate hooligan bike!
thank you very much for the video, i'm from Brazil and i just bought my super duke 990 2010 and you helped me a lot! 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Glad I could help!
Good job buddy I bought myself a torque wrench recently i decided when adjusting the chain it is pretty important to make sure the axle nut is on properly it kind of does an important job 😂 has come in handy in checking all the bolts on the bike, the best tool in the toolbox I think.
It just takes the guess work out of the equation. Handy :)
Hi, nice video, just couple things, not always full synthetic is the best oil, for modern bikes with new engines is quite the best choice but with old bikes, noisy engines and bikes with sealing factory problem mineral oil, 90% of the times, is way better because it’s thicker than synthetic and it’s good to save money but I would invest in the best oil I can get for the bike, every time I do an oil change on my bikes whenever is my Harley, the bmw or the Honda I get best things money can buy, it may sound more expensive to use top quality oil and filters but trust me in the long run it saves you money on engine works. Just couple advices from my experience. Have a good one and ride safe brother
True brother, but I was referring specifically to KTM 990. Fully synthetic is the best choice here. Still, I'd rather change oil twice as often rather than once with the overpriced stuff. My opinion only, and I appreciate yours. Cheers for your input bro. Ride safe.
I go by what the manual says for the particular bike. Not just the thickness value eg 5W-30 but if there is a spec for example low ash eg ACEA C3 or API.
If my own bike or car is valuable, and not just a cheap runaround, I use an own brand oil which should be the best eg Harley Davidson, Yamaha and Honda all do their own brand oils and they are special and high quality. Yamalube (Yamaha) for example is different to anything else i have bought and I am very happy to use it.
Hey Mackie,
You're correct that dry sumps were mainly for racing, this was to get more HP from the engine as the crank rotating in oil lost a chunk of power, imagine like us trying to run or move fast in the swimming pool. Baffles are used to stop the oil sloshing to one side in corners.
Good info mate and it makes perfect sense too. Cheers for that, every day something new! Is that 1290 yours?
MackieBass. Yes Mackie the 1290 is mine. Love it and can’t believe how good at touring it is, I’ve had it all over Europe (western anyway)
Good video no bullshit to the point. And very helpful if you have never done a service in one before. Good tip with the foil👍
Glad it helps
Another brilliant instructional video. Done the Oberon slave upgrade thanks to you, so this is next to do. Thumbs up!
Nice one, gla dit helps, but remember - I am not qualified in any way, so always refer to manual and common sense ;)
@@MackieBass Common sense is a rare commodity these days.... Shame those who have it can't bottle it and sell it! 🏍
Great job bro, damn those dry sumps are so much more work, a job well done, close one with the oil leaking all over the rear like that, RSM8.
Nice job mate, always good to see how others do it, and a great tip with the foil too :)
happy days indeed! thanks for the tips. i had to revisit this again.
Any time!
I am about to do this soon, you have boosted my confidence brother! Thanks
Go for it!
@@MackieBass i did, and water in the oil, damn it!!
@@Rogge73 nooo! how come?
@@MackieBass Blown seal to waterpump shaft, common problem, but sucks!!
I like the video, very informative, learned from you Boss 🙏🏼 i have been having issues with my 08 superduke, new stator new regulator new battery its just cranking no starting, nice bike though no doubt 👍🏽👌🏾
Fantastic bike! Best I've owned yet!
Hello from Greece!!
Interesting story about the bolt on oil filter cover but i have the manuals for 05-06 and 07 and the specs are 6nm ..
Just saying.
Thanks for the video.
yeah, I know... :/
Nice one mate ! 👍 Im noticing the gaskets are a little different on the later models (SMT 2013)
Quite possible. This was MK1
Theres is a oil drain hose out there by cj design 🤙 edit: Tipp use one of the new oilfilter with bypass ventil on top 👍
I wanna have a beer with this dude lol
Cheers man!
Definitely more complicated than a Bonneville. I’ve never owned a KTM so this was interesting to see.
Something new...a little different. :)
Thanks for this video. Good to learn this about the bike 👍
My pleasure!
Brilliant.... great tips and easy to follow many thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Rob here from NZ ,land of the long white cloud ,cool info dude ,I am about to get a super duke 990 so perfect timing to get this .
Geting me a torque wrench and a role of foil.no fkn pissing oil for me !
Funky accent man ,Belg/French ?
Do it. Great bike! Polish. :)
So I followed your instructions about torquing and guess what? Now I have a snapped bolt to deal with. My local ktm dealer said for future, just do it hand tight.
This is not my imstructions. It's in the KTM manual.
I've done it hand right before, and I've snapped the bolt!
Maybe your torque wrench is faulty and not calibrated, right?
It can often happen to the large ones, with a wide spectrum of range.
@@MackieBassI’m new to torque wrench’s and I only had a 1/2 inch one with a bunch of reducers. I was unaware that I should have reduced the torque specs when using them. I now have a 1/4 inch one so hopefully I will be more successful in the future. The SD 990 I just bought has been sitting since 2012 so I’m trying to change all fluids, your video is the only one on CZcams for this particular ktm. The manual doesn’t tell me how to flush the coolant, I had to get the local shop to send a picture of their service manual.
Hey Bassbruv good job buddy. Peace and Love 👍🏻☮❤
Thanks man. How's music going for you these days?
@@MackieBass
It's on hold while we finnish this shutdown at work maybe another 4 to 6 weeks but when we get back to normal we have a new rehearssl place to try and im going to look for a guitarist so i can just concentrate on bass and vocals...👍🏻☮❤
Thanks for the clear instruction.
You are welcome!
Need to do this on the baby Duke so interesting to see much the same principles. So different to your average road bike - but that's because it isn't your average road bike! Bet the Motorex fan boys will be upset 😅 Like the foil idea, might try that on the Bandit next time as it always goes over the pipes from the filter. Skäl David
No it's not... nothing usual about this bike. I'm thinking of getting a supermoto version of mine... you interested in the superduke? ;)
MackieBass interested, yes of course. Can I afford it just now, not really ☹️
Thank you for the video, great explaination.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great video. Thank you.
Thank you too!
Thanks for the video
No problem!
I snapped 2 bolts from oil filter cap 🤣
I have to order original one or stronger, because i bought in normal metal store and also snapped around 5NM 😢
Bad design by KTM I'd say!
great video, i really enjoyed watching it :-)
Glad you enjoyed it
Do you have any wheel/sprocket/chain removal videos? There seems to be a lack of 990 SD content
Sadly I don't. Sold the bike some time ago, so can't make them anymore. Not on this model anyway.
thanks very much for the tutorial. you are funny guy.
you know who else was a fun-guy? A mushroom ;)
great video. thanks much
Glad you liked it!
What handguards are those
KTM original ones
@@MackieBass do you have a link?
Thank you
Great video mate
Glad you like it man
@@MackieBass fitting a slipper clutch this weekend so oil change the same time... your video was exactly what I needed and entertainment too. Top man, top bike.
Do you do trackdays?
Always wanted to, but always scared to damaged my pride and joy...and I simply cannot afford a track bike. :(
Is that Lithuanian beer bottle i see on your shelf? ( yellow label) 😁 nice video btw, planning on buying super duke myself
Yes and yes! Do it, great bike!
Thanks for posting great vid....look forward to more similar....;)
One more coming very soon.
@@MackieBass have subscribed looking forward to it......
@@painJm1 good man. I'm installing Oberon clutch slave assembly next :)
@@MackieBass very good, I just changed my chain and sprocket, it's the first I've done on a motorbike, meant to make a vid but didn't have enough time, I do regret it.....will be changing the oil soon, I usually get these things done at a service agent but I'm going to do as much as possible. The other one I heard is tricky is the cooling system. Your vids are very detailed and accurate, youre a great character and love your accent and stories...keep up the great work, am sure you will have good success on CZcams...
Hi one question, i got it to a bit under max when i did all steps driven it a little let it cool down 1 min and checked. What to do? Drain that little bit or leave it?
If it is under max, leave it. if it's over max, suck out a little with a syringe, but under max - is ok.
@@MackieBass thank you very much for the reply brother
Love it!
So glad!
Damn u look like Budd from Kill Bill. Great video!
Thanks man! I take it as a compliment!
Great Video! I inadvertently put coolant in the oil filler! Dumb ass... Nice to know not too big a job to clean it out - tin foil - Genius!
How meny miles have your superduke?
It had 35k when i sold it
Wonderful❤
Thank you! Cheers!
What type of oil is it ur useing iam about to change the oil on my 990r
Different oil for different riding style and ambient temperature. But stick to fully synthetic for sure!
@@MackieBass will i still with 10w50 but a good brand name dont fancy paying the price for the motorx stuff
Is that stock speedometer cluster?
Yes, it is for the 05 / 06 model
Stator plug is a bit roasted
Yeah common issues. Sorted now
@@MackieBass love the Ktm's, working on all of them. The 990 is the best engine imo. And will be my next bike. A 990 sd
