You forgot to mention that a part of the AMD server CPU share rising is thanks to Nvidia. Because so much of the computing (AI) is being done on the GPUs, the CPU itself means little. Companies are buying servers as basically platforms for GPU offloading and so which ever servers are available fastest (and sometimes cheapest) are being ordered. AMD is benefiting from that.

    Hi Howareya? Linux nerd here.
The importance of Nvidia's shift is rather significant. Nvidia notoriously has been a thorn in the side of the Linux community for consistently using a closed-source driver that is developed internally at the company. This is in stark contrast to AMD's drivers, which has a fully community-developed driver. While their proprietary drivers were fine and usable, they often lagged behind in relative performance and featurewise compared to AMD's completely community driven, open-source driver.
Nvidia shifting to an open-source kernel driver going forward means they will see support much faster for new features and modules. All the different features we could see gets a bit in the weeds, but marked to say we'll definitely see better game performance and a more stable experience on Linux.
An important note - They're only open-sourcing the kernel-level driver, while the userspace level driver will still be closed. Still, it's good to see progress all the same.
That's the best I'm able to explain it. If I missed something I'm sure a fellow Linux nerd will be loudly correcting me in the replies lol

AMD's drivers aren't community driven, The drivers are developed by AMD like they should, the difference is they work with Linus to get their code accepted upstream. A large amount of Linux is actually directly written by corporations, Google, Intel, AMD, explicitly contribute for self interest reasons. The reason why Linux, especially in the server space is so dominant, is that you don't have to deal with the bureaucratic bullshit of talking to Microsoft to get access to the source code, or delegate resources to you.

    • @gg-gn3re
      @gg-gn3re Před 16 dny

should be compared to intels drivers. intel has had chip drivers being added to the kernel for decades longer than amd and nvidia. They continue to have by far the best support for all of their special chips which are far more than what amd and nvidia combined provide. intel has everything from special memory, to network cards, to cpus, to gpus (integrated gpu also counts), to special cpu/gpu, gpgpu, quicksync.. dedicated pcie computing.. blah blah blah. Their drivers are also the more accurate as far as graphics processing goes. They've not had dedicated until now.
I don't even run anything intel anymore, other than their network cards. However their dominance and contributions are not to be ignored. For however bad they've been, they have also always done some very good additions in software. Their GPU analyzing software was shown here a month or so back on gamer's nexus as well. They're the only ones whom make that available.

they won't. they are going to be very expensive, not targeted primarily at gamers. it's most probably aimed at people wanting an Apple Max chip, but on Windows. a Strix Point CPU with a 5060/5070 will most probably be a much better deal, especially that the 5070 mobile is rumoured to have 12 gigs of VRAM. I highly doubt a Strix Halo 40CU will be sold for less than 2k. however, a Strix Point 12CU is also rumoured to rival the 3050. that's much more accesible for low-end gaming. If they're targeting this at professionals, they better put some good video decoders on the media engine, at the very least some x264/265 decoders, as it can dramatically improve timeline performance for video editors with cameras that use those codecs. If they do that... it's possible, I might stick with AMD rather than switching to Intel with my next build. I'm really excited for this next CPU war. This is all guess work but
The TDP is the key on those strix point apu's, if you take the 260w a 7800xt usually draws with its 60 CU's knock 33% off it(for 60 down to 40 CU's) for the tdp you get 174w, expect some improvement between rdna 3.5 and 3, so being generous lets guestimate 140w at full performance for 40 RNDA3.5 CU's at full tilt, the TDP of the combined chip is 120W then take around 70w for the actual CPU part(Zen 4's power draw minus 10w for assumed improvement) off it, that leaves 50w for the 40 CU's to actually play with.
with that level of power limit compared to what it could actually do, that puts it somewhere around a 3050 in performance, will be interesting to see if I'm correct on this one
I'm sure 40 CU's of RDNA3.5 are 4070 class, if they weren't power limited to all hell, I very much doubt they are when limited that much.
EDIT: if they dynamically allocate power based on what the cpu is using, it might hit 3060 or 3060 ti performance(say if the cpu was using 40w and the rest was allowed to the gpu)

Worth noting that the M4 chip seems to have a specific advantage over the M3 in the image processing benchmarks, with less of an advantage in other tests when you look at the breakdowns. I would hazard a guess that the NPU is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in beating the M3 by the margins it does, and that's why I'd want to see a broader benchmarking suite to see where exactly it's getting its advantages.
If the NPU is the biggest selling point, this more speaks to Apple rushing it out to beat Arrow Lake and Zen 5 than anything else.

I'm SUPER excited about Strix Point and Strix Halo. If these pan out it'll be the first time (besides Console APUs) that an iGPU/APU will hit actual current (at least 60-70 series) gen graphics cards. They BETTER figure out how to cool that Strix Halo LP 20CU unit for a badass handheld lol
The 780m has 12CU of RDNA3 and is the current best iGPU of all time. Think of 20 to 40 CUs. Friggin sweet. Although my desktop graphics card would still smoke it by several miles, this MAY offer good price to performance in the mid range PC builds. If the Strix Halo was $699 for the even the 24 or 32 CU model it may actually be the same or less as paying for a CPU/GPU separately.
(To be fair the 760m and 780m are already a massive advance compared to prior iGPU offerings.)

Fist computer I built was in 1999 which a dual socket Celeron using the Abit BP6 motherboard. I told some people
that in the future that there would be multiple CPU's on one die. They did not believe me. Intel was already working on it.
The only reason they don't have super fast GPU on the CPU die, is they do not want to loose sales for their GPU cards.
It would make sense to have it all on one package as it is pack together and communications lanes would be much closer.
They could design the APU to have upgradeable ram, or on the die for GPU that is not shared to the CPU. Look at how large the Cerebras WSE-3 (44 Gigabytes on board, 21 Petabytes/sec) is, and one can see how it is doable it really is.

      > The only reason they don't have super fast GPU on the CPU die, is they do not want to loose sales for their GPU cards.
Probably more about heat produced and power consumed in like a handful of square centimeters. They have to wait for fab to catch up to ideas.
      > Look at how large the Cerebras WSE-3 (44 Gigabytes on board, 21 Petabytes/sec) is, and one can see how it is doable it really is.
A lot of stuff that's completely mundane on a supercomputer is still quite exotic on a PC. Supercomputers are specialty equipment and have effectively unlimited budgets. Even stuff like ultra high speed/density physical interconnects (the connector itself) can cost hundreds of dollars. Sure you could designed your own cost-cut version, but that's millions of dollars in expenditure just on the interconnect.
