FYI strix Halo will have a 256b memory bus, so it will not be memory starved in the same way other APUs are
I second that, thank you Silverstone for making me aware of your products.
You forgot to mention that a part of the AMD server CPU share rising is thanks to Nvidia. Because so much of the computing (AI) is being done on the GPUs, the CPU itself means little. Companies are buying servers as basically platforms for GPU offloading and so which ever servers are available fastest (and sometimes cheapest) are being ordered. AMD is benefiting from that.
When they literally wont sell you the game, piracy is your only option.

Watch out. That is a controversial opinion here cause Bret loves slurping corporate boots when it comes to piracy. Never mind these multi-billion dollar companies actively looking for any possible way to screw consumers: "PiRaCy iS AlWayS wRoNg"
4070 level apu is wild. it would make some insane sff builds

Hi Howareya? Linux nerd here.
The importance of Nvidia's shift is rather significant. Nvidia notoriously has been a thorn in the side of the Linux community for consistently using a closed-source driver that is developed internally at the company. This is in stark contrast to AMD's drivers, which has a fully community-developed driver. While their proprietary drivers were fine and usable, they often lagged behind in relative performance and featurewise compared to AMD's completely community driven, open-source driver.
Nvidia shifting to an open-source kernel driver going forward means they will see support much faster for new features and modules. All the different features we could see gets a bit in the weeds, but marked to say we'll definitely see better game performance and a more stable experience on Linux.
An important note - They're only open-sourcing the kernel-level driver, while the userspace level driver will still be closed. Still, it's good to see progress all the same.
That's the best I'm able to explain it. If I missed something I'm sure a fellow Linux nerd will be loudly correcting me in the replies lol
You got it right, the AMD open source driver is so good on linux these days it a no brainer to buy an AMD gpu if your at all linux bound.
nouveau is better
😮
AMD's drivers aren't community driven, The drivers are developed by AMD like they should, the difference is they work with Linus to get their code accepted upstream. A large amount of Linux is actually directly written by corporations, Google, Intel, AMD, explicitly contribute for self interest reasons. The reason why Linux, especially in the server space is so dominant, is that you don't have to deal with the bureaucratic bullshit of talking to Microsoft to get access to the source code, or delegate resources to you.
should be compared to intels drivers. intel has had chip drivers being added to the kernel for decades longer than amd and nvidia. They continue to have by far the best support for all of their special chips which are far more than what amd and nvidia combined provide. intel has everything from special memory, to network cards, to cpus, to gpus (integrated gpu also counts), to special cpu/gpu, gpgpu, quicksync.. dedicated pcie computing.. blah blah blah. Their drivers are also the more accurate as far as graphics processing goes. They've not had dedicated until now.
I don't even run anything intel anymore, other than their network cards. However their dominance and contributions are not to be ignored. For however bad they've been, they have also always done some very good additions in software. Their GPU analyzing software was shown here a month or so back on gamer's nexus as well. They're the only ones whom make that available.
Things google used to be great at, like "what engine is in a 2007 whatever specific model." Google is now TERRIBLE at that, but chatGPT is by far the fastest way to answer a simple question.
Yeah, I head that was (at least partly) because Google has begun modifying the queries that we type in, resulting in more generalized results. This might be good in some places, like a non-tech savvy individual who doesn't know how to search, but it really just about ruins it for everybody else
this is the beauty of linux- the driver never truly stop being optimized (still getting optimizations for R300) and every release of a compiler brings substantial speedups in the whole system
Google searches have become increasingly useless, so ANY competition in that space is welcome. I am probably going to sound old as heck here, but what ever happened to searching the content of websites for what was entered into the search bar?
It would seem that Google has gone from "helping people find what they are looking for" to "obscuring anything that they aren't paid to show you" awfully quick.
This is what happens when you switch from keyword based searches to natural language processing. Words get interpreted by something else rather than taking literally and then you get something else as a result
Wokeness
You can absolutely blame SEO garbage sites for slowly cluttering searches, malware ridden sponsored links, and more. We (humanity) collectively decided to shit on the internet.

A GTX 970 is still as capable as a PS4 Pro. I was playing Cyberpunk 2077 at launch just fine (well, just fine for the condition the game was in at launch). It's a perfectly capable little beast for most 1080p games, and I used it a lot with my 3D HDTV or Nvidia's 3D glasses and a high refresh monitor.
I also think thouse new APU's and especially the top end one should have atleast 1GB of L3 cache on it if not 2-4GB. Or better yet have actual vram on it and like 12-16GB of it, GDDR7.
11:03 MicroSd card could already be boot device by pressing power button and plus button at the same time. I used it to boot windows off a microsd when I needed a portable windows device
It would be cool if Nvidia customers have a seamless OOTB experience when using Linux. If the kernel's opensource driver is upstreamed, that means no shenanigans for many users and less of a barrier of entry for those that want to test Linux.
A 4070 level APU sounds like it would be great for a small form factor HTPC!
It sounds like it would be great for anyone. A fucking 4070 in a single chip. That will piss Nvidia off.
@@sirdetmist3204 I don't think Nvidia cares one iota. I do think however though AMD cares a whole lot about Nvidia with all the money and notoriety they are making in the ai sphere.
@@randysalsman6992 They will care when their overpriced GPUs are being competed with by an APU. Makes them look kinda shit.
It basically means AMD can kill the lower end of Nvidia.
@@sirdetmist3204 And NV can end their consumer GPU line and give the production resources over to the datacenter line that makes 8x more revenue.
this is the future. the power required to run cpu/gpu/memory separately leads to huge heating problems too.
I'm excited about how this APU will take over and replace low-end to mid-range graphics cards, at least in the laptop segment, grabbing a market share from Nvidia.
they won't. they are going to be very expensive, not targeted primarily at gamers. it's most probably aimed at people wanting an Apple Max chip, but on Windows. a Strix Point CPU with a 5060/5070 will most probably be a much better deal, especially that the 5070 mobile is rumoured to have 12 gigs of VRAM. I highly doubt a Strix Halo 40CU will be sold for less than 2k. however, a Strix Point 12CU is also rumoured to rival the 3050. that's much more accesible for low-end gaming. I'm strictly talking about price here.
This has become my new favorite Tech News channel that I look forward to every weekday 😄
the question with mesa is if they employ the gimped version as some distros do.
I wonder how a Steam Deck 2 may perform if they manage to integrate some of this high performance chips on it. I would love to have a high TDP mode for when I got it connected to a power outlet and a low TDP mode for when I'm on the go.
Something to the level of a 3050 would be amazing performance for a handheld IMHO.
Sony need to get sued
Saw this vintage video in 2402 .Had to travel back in time to really appreciate it
A 120w APU? This is surprising. If they're targeting this at professionals, they better put some good video decoders on the media engine, at the very least some x264/265 decoders, as it can dramatically improve timeline performance for video editors with cameras that use those codecs. If they do that... it's possible, I might stick with AMD rather than switching to Intel with my next build. I'm really excited for this next CPU war. And I'd rather see their entire presentation be them counting how many pads are on the bottom of the CPU at the speed of a sloth than hear them talk about AI for even a split second.
Do you even Linux bro?
If I were to get that new APU I'd go with just the 8 CPU cores version. I think that would give you the best balance out of the cpu/gpu power management.
if iGPU's could approach 4070 performance, then I'd finally - finally - get my wish to have a PS5 like performer without the extra hardware.
they wont its likely the mobile version of the 4070 since their talking about laptops so their not comparing strix to the desktop 4070 which is much faster than the mobile counterparts.
idk how much the 256 bit bus will help with amd's next apu 12:37 but google says the 4070m in laptops has a 128 bit bus like the desktop 4060, we won't know how it compares to desktop graphics cards until we get benchmarks, we'll probably have to wait until just before its released to see
@@U-1F642 we have benchmarks already look at laptop 4070 vs desktop 4070...

You should look into something like Nobara or Bazzite Linux. I’ve been using for a couple days now and it’s worked great
In regards to Sonys sign in requirements, Microsoft are doing the same thing with Forza motorsport 2023 as it basically becomes a demo if you lose internet connection even offline gameplay
I wish the APU came out sooner. I don't have a desktop and because money tightness is an issue for me I want to get something that is most cost effective and I feel like this would have been great with me upgrading to a descrete gpu later on.... Dang it
10:12 I am hoping that this and the news that Valve is actively contributing to graphics drivers that this means we may see a desktop version of SteamOS on the horizon. Nvidia has probably held Valve back since Linux is not the best experience it can be with an Nvidia card due to it being proprietary in an open source OS, with it also not being Nvidia's focus to maintain and update.
NVIDIA finally being usable with Linux and Wayland is an amazing thing
Would still rather AMD get better in the compute area first to have a solid competitor before nvidia gets useable. Need competition
@@vocassen I buy what I can and I use what I have. Kinda crazy how NVIDIA is pretty much unusable on Wayland at the moment. I have an old GTX 1050 Ti and would like to keep using it.

I'm excited for the upcoming Strix Halo APU, but the problem with these powerful APUs they always come paired with a GPU "regarding laptops" in my country.

8c/16t 40cu Strix Point w/ its 256-bit LPDDR5(x) RAM bus, is looking very attractive. I might replace my whole desktop for something so-equipped, with LPCAMM upgradeable RAM.
PS: If one's office/bedroom has any heating w/ a thermostat on the wall, you likely have access to a 20A 240VAC circuit. Some homes are easy to run a dedicated branch too, but 240VAC is common in the US/CAN, just not usually to receptacles (typ. for heaters and appliances)
18:21 my gpu is that 7950 thermal pad, neat 😁
These APUs would be awesome for HTPCs. ALSO with all of these powerful APUs coming out, I would imagine Valve has all the right tools to release new Steam machines that would be ACTUALLY be quite good. Will they do it? That is a big maybe. I could definitely see it compete in the console market if its price right.
I agree, or for people who do not want to spend a fortune on a dGPU which needs a lot of PSU power.
Honestly even a APU with 4060 performance would be incredible. Would be an easy recommendation to new gamers
This is all guess work but
The TDP is the key on those strix point apu's, if you take the 260w a 7800xt usually draws with its 60 CU's knock 33% off it(for 60 down to 40 CU's) for the tdp you get 174w, expect some improvement between rdna 3.5 and 3, so being generous lets guestimate 140w at full performance for 40 RNDA3.5 CU's at full tilt, the TDP of the combined chip is 120W then take around 70w for the actual CPU part(Zen 4's power draw minus 10w for assumed improvement) off it, that leaves 50w for the 40 CU's to actually play with.
with that level of power limit compared to what it could actually do, that puts it somewhere around a 3050 in performance, will be interesting to see if I'm correct on this one
I'm sure 40 CU's of RDNA3.5 are 4070 class, if they weren't power limited to all hell, I very much doubt they are when limited that much.
EDIT: if they dynamically allocate power based on what the cpu is using, it might hit 3060 or 3060 ti performance(say if the cpu was using 40w and the rest was allowed to the gpu)
I would like to know how much AMD's positions in the handheld, mini, and console markets are responsible for their market share increase. These markets barely existed until fairly recently.
Also, with Google implementing their experimental AI overviews, I'm accidentally using LLMs more than I am on purpose.

Worth noting that the M4 chip seems to have a specific advantage over the M3 in the image processing benchmarks, with less of an advantage in other tests when you look at the breakdowns. I would hazard a guess that the NPU is doing a lot of the heavy lifting in beating the M3 by the margins it does, and that's why I'd want to see a broader benchmarking suite to see where exactly it's getting its advantages.
If the NPU is the biggest selling point, this more speaks to Apple rushing it out to beat Arrow Lake and Zen 5 than anything else.

Strix Halo on a valve set top box would be nice
I'm SUPER excited about Strix Point and Strix Halo. If these pan out it'll be the first time (besides Console APUs) that an iGPU/APU will hit actual current (at least 60-70 series) gen graphics cards. They BETTER figure out how to cool that Strix Halo LP 20CU unit for a badass handheld lol
The 780m has 12CU of RDNA3 and is the current best iGPU of all time. Think of 20 to 40 CUs. Friggin sweet. Although my desktop graphics card would still smoke it by several miles, this MAY offer good price to performance in the mid range PC builds. If the Strix Halo was $699 for the even the 24 or 32 CU model it may actually be the same or less as paying for a CPU/GPU separately.
(To be fair the 760m and 780m are already a massive advance compared to prior iGPU offerings.)
Really not a fan of the "soldered memory to the board so we could get thinner" AMD stuff. It doesn't need to be that thin. We can handle a little thickness if it means parts are replaceable.
The nvidia driver isn't a very big deal YET because it still isn't integrated in the linux kernel (which is the nice thing with amd and intel)

that in the future that there would be multiple CPU's on one die. They did not believe me. Intel was already working on it.
The only reason they don't have super fast GPU on the CPU die, is they do not want to loose sales for their GPU cards.
It would make sense to have it all on one package as it is pack together and communications lanes would be much closer.
They could design the APU to have upgradeable ram, or on the die for GPU that is not shared to the CPU. Look at how large the Cerebras WSE-3 (44 Gigabytes on board, 21 Petabytes/sec) is, and one can see how it is doable it really is.
> The only reason they don't have super fast GPU on the CPU die, is they do not want to loose sales for their GPU cards.
Probably more about heat produced and power consumed in like a handful of square centimeters. They have to wait for fab to catch up to ideas.
> Look at how large the Cerebras WSE-3 (44 Gigabytes on board, 21 Petabytes/sec) is, and one can see how it is doable it really is.
A lot of stuff that's completely mundane on a supercomputer is still quite exotic on a PC. Supercomputers are specialty equipment and have effectively unlimited budgets. Even stuff like ultra high speed/density physical interconnects (the connector itself) can cost hundreds of dollars. Sure you could designed your own cost-cut version, but that's millions of dollars in expenditure just on the interconnect.
When strix halo portables are made that's gonna be some POWA (expect max 45w)
Why is table comparing APU to 4070 and not 7700XT or something? Strange
Seeing these apus seems like the part of the console apus that might be available for desktop use for once, unlikely
Make it optional, and make Cross-Platform SAVES be a thing between PC and PS5.
On the AMD Super APU front. If they manage to push in there (16GB of) HBM memory, im going to lie, im not going to even upgrade to RTX.
Your "Ask Jeeves" comparison to AI is spot on! I'm not impressed with AI at all, it's nothing more than an art calculator and over glorified search engine combined. I'll be impressed with AI when it's an exact replica of what Jarvis is capable of (except for turning into an Infinity stone being) from the Iron Man movies. Till then, AI is useless to me and nothing more than a search engine gimmick.
Still find it ironic that the “high power”connectors have smaller pins.
Time keeps on slipping, slipping, slipping, into the future
Not enough GPU cores on Strix Halo. DUMP those NPU AI cores or have an AI less model to really show us how far it can go currently. Some of us don't WANT those AI cores.

Getting 4060 performance in an apu would be perfect. I doubt they will get 4070 though.
Why are the AMD APU's being compared to NoVidea GPU's and not AMD GPU's? Maybe I'm stupid on this one but......
Well NVidia do hold about 80% of the consumer graphics market. So it makes sense for AMD to use those as a comparison.
