I have been gobsmacked by the brilliant Gillian Wright. One of televisions most under appreciated talents, a superb actress.

2005 was definitely one of Eastenders best years

It was a great year, especially in the second half. But one that gets sadly overlooked at times because it was sandwiched between two dodgy years (but luckily it really is only an increasingly-irrelevant minority of silly people who unfairly tar the glorious 2005 with the same brush as the unprecedentedly-and-unavoidably golden chaos that was most of 2004 and the transitional time-binding but not completely abysmal 2006). The last six months of 2005 were heads-and-heels over anything that’s followed. EastEnders slowly-but-surely changed after the night Dennis Rickman was stabbed and not for the better.

Even though this is fake (yet brilliantly acted and written), it’s really discomforting to know that similar events actually happen in real life.

I know when it comes to EastEnders’ most iconic moments people tend to think of the Sharongate reveal, you ain’t my mother and the Lisa/Phil. reveal (and the 1986 divorce papers) but the Jean/Frank/Stacey week will forever be on-par with the Kat./Zoe one as the best week in Eastenders’ history. It just happened to be less about sensational shootings and affairs (which were brilliant storylines for what they were but best in moderation, not as a rule) and more about reunions and the most down-to-earth drama that exists on television.
The Stacey/Jean thread might’ve happened on a ‘fictional’ show but otherwise it’s far from fake. This is accurate down to the finest photogenic detail.

This is the real Jean Slater, really. She acted her socks off towards the end of her last breakdown but she’s not been gritty (like in this clip) for a very long time and more often than not she comes across as cartoonish and irritating these days (as I’ve said many, many times in the comments section on other clips). I’m glad she didn’t really win anything at the soaps’ award ceremony just gone. ’05 Jean would be shaking her head in disgust at having her character turned into such a cartoon over the past 12 years.
