- FROM THE QUEENSBERRY VAULT...
It's October 1997 and a 22-0 Joe Calzaghe takes on the legendary Chris Eubank for the vacant WBO World Super Middleweight Championship. This fight wasn't meant to happen. Calzaghe was supposed to be fighting Steve Collins, while Eubank was preparing for a light heavyweight contest against Mark Prince. With Collins' forced to retire, Calzaghe had 2 weeks to prepare for a new opponent and Eubank had 2 weeks to drop the weight.
This turned into a real 'changing of the guard' classic.

I watched every single Calzaghe fight and pretty much every televised fight ever as well so I can honestly say that Joe Calzaghe is one of the best but most underrated fighter in boxing. His record tells you how good he was and the fact that he had over 40 fights, won them all and doesn't even look like he's ever been a boxer tells you how good he was.
Massive Big Up to Joe Calzaghe!!!
Totally Agree Bro.
underrated fighter in boxing! what planet you on lool is in the hall of fame amongst the worlds greats to ever step in the ring lool
Fo sho
Fight with Roy Jones he took piss out Jones, that Joe's last fight
Calzaghe has to be the most underrated boxer ever. Absolute class.
So true
He's not underated. Just in the states
Ben, Eubanks and Calzaghe ruled the middle weight division at the time. It was so exiting to watch them fighting on a Friday night on terrestrial television.
Benn*
Eubank*
Eubank kept British Boxing alive for a long time. And Joe Calzaghe always conducted himself like a champion and also said this was his hardest fight. Respect to both men.
are you forgetting nigel and collins and all the other great british boxers in the 80's and 90's?
@@TheVillest
Eubank brought a bigger crowd than Ben and Collins. Eubank, at the time, was the man everyone loved to hate. He put on a class act. Collins had a rubbish personality. And Ben couldn't match Eubank's personality, nor could Watson.
@@truthhitman7473 they all certainly matched his boxing skills lmao. all you're talking about is the fashion show on the walk to the ring LOL
@@TheVillest
I am , yeah. That and his boxing skills kept the British boxing alive , which is why Eubank is more successful than Ben and Watson.
@@truthhitman7473 eubank had way more fights than those two also lol
Joe’s conditioning and quickness of hands, great footwork were all just superb. I heard lots of people saying he slapped with his punches but if that’s so he knocked a Hell of a lot of guys out with those slap punches!
Totally agree mate, I'm bigger than Calzaghe but I wouldn't want to be "slapped" by Joe....
Those hooks and crosses were lashing when he chose to invest
Well in MMA they got the Stockton slap..in boxing they got the Welsh wallop ..I can say with absolutely personal experience you can spark a man clean off his feet with a good slap
wow! Joe was fantastic, if he was born in the USA at this time he would have left a greater imprint on his career, but those who understand boxing will recognize the talent! Eubank was a solid boxer and a gentleman!
that Calzaghe is in my top 3 of boxers that i really liked the most .
Joe calzaghe could have fought in any era he would have given hearns Leonard Duran and I know Hagler never left the middleweight division the fights of there lives true champ Joe calzaghe
Only guy he has a chance against would be Duran, because Duran was a brawler and brawlers match poorly against Calzaghe. The other fighters you named would starch Calzaghe.
I doubt Leonard could actually stop Calzaghe inside the distance given he has been in with bigger punchers than Leonard. But Leonard has the boxing skills and hand and foot speed to win a decision.Duran just isn’t suited style for style against the bigger Calzaghe.Hearns maybe can outbox Calzaghe but then again he could get KOed by him too.Calzaghe before his chronic hand issues could definitely power punch with authority.Hagler out of the fabulous four would be the most likely to stop Calzaghe inside the distance but Calzaghe could definitely present problems for Hagler too. And Calzaghe would still be the naturally bigger man against any of the fabulous four, who would have had a punching power advantage and or speed and reach advantage over some of them, and a better work rate than any of them.Any boxer who can throw around 1,000 punches in a fight which Calzaghe did in several fights is going to present the opponent with problems just in reducing that kind of punch output. The punches don’t need to look pretty or land fully clean as Jeff Lacy found out himself if enough of those punches land they do take effect on the one being hit.The only one of the fabulous four I see winning relatively easily against Calzaghe is Leonard using similar tactics and strategy he used to defeat Hagler with.He has the speed advantages of both hands and foot speed.Throws maybe the best punch combinations ever seen by a boxer and has the footwork to get in and out of range before Calzaghe can land his own clusters of punches so thus negating Calzaghe punch output right there. And the height and reach differences can be overcome by the superior speed of Leonard.
Yeah right.
it would be interesting to see. His volume doesnt let ppl get their shots off and no matter what mexicans and black fans say his pillow fists touch ppl up over the duration of a fight just look at Jeff Lacy.
Never seen a better boxer than joe
Eubanks took Joe in the trenches, still Joe was never beat so respects to the man..rip Enzo..
Calzaghe fought everyone and defeated everyone, and he also brought style and excitement into his fights, truly a great boxer, shame he's not that talked about these days, one of the best to ever do it
This is the caliber of opponent Joe was boxing early in his career - respect.
I dont mean to be off topic but does anyone know a method to log back into an instagram account?
I was stupid forgot my password. I appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Heath Erik Instablaster =)
All Respect for Eubank. Great fighter. Never gave Up, but I just could never stand him and his posing. Joe, on the other hand went on to be unbeaten. Mucho respect to a fighter with so so much stamina.
I always thought that Eubank's poses were his riff on a Twilght Zone character. Lee Marvin was the star. Mechanical boxers.
Eubanks was a dirty fighter, always going in with his head first,Same thing Hopkins tried and both got there asses kicked
Eubanks has a retro style, he moves like boxers used to in 30s!
He moves like a couple of guys I know down the rainbow club. Hi boys!

Eubank*
Joe calzaghe has just got to be one of the most I would say easily top 5 most underrated and unrecognized of all time he's beaten some of the best of all time Bernard Hopkins Roy Jones jr. Jeff Lacy mikkel Kessler and of course Chris Eubank and that was towards the end of his career when he was well into his career the best of all was when he beat Roy Jones jr. And Bernard Hopkins at their own game give them a taste of their own medicine taunting them showboating but not taking it too far it's well he's like the Energizer Bunny he has an endless stamina throwing an average of 1000 punches over 12 rounds ridiculous!!
Thing is, he faced Roy Jones and Hopkins when they were way past their prime
Jones was , not Hopkins
@@BadNews885 lets no act like joe wasnt out of his prime ?!
@@geedee1264A fair point, nowhere near to the degree as Jones, though. As for Hopkins, if I remember correctly, he still mangedt o have success after losing to Calzaghe so that win has aged well
I have a sneaking suspicion that the commentator, Gutteridge I think, was not keen on Welsh people. When Joe landed a power punch and Eubank touched the canvas with both hands he disputed that this was a knock down.
Great fight by both boxers, I am huge fan of both of them. British boxing at its best.
It only coz I iz Welsh? Sod off
Thanks for putting this up Frank, my two idols! 🙌🏽🥊
Thous shalt serve no idols, nor have any graven images.
@@jackiecharlie8798Wjo wrote that? A man? Does that mean you idolise too? No? Remember God did not write the bible. Heros are always worthy to inspire and encourage good over evil.
that was a Knock Down in 7... EUBANK touch canvas with both hands on his own before the melley.
Joe was awesome boxer those hands are fire, no way anyone out point that guy volume is crazy, he just coming and coming and coming and don't stop, great conditioning to do that whole fight is unreal...
The commentators doubted Calzaghes power at that speed of hand, but Eubank later said that every one of Joe's so-called "slaps", was a hurtful punch, and that Joe had heavy hands as well. Just look at his record at the time of this fight, before his hand trouble.....
When you consider that Eubank was well past his sell by date and had a lot of weight to drop it was a spirited performance.
yeah past his expiration date at the ripe age of 31 LOL. his real competition didnt start till his first fight with nigel benn and that was his 25/26th fight lmao
I was taking guesses in my head when this fight was....I remember 90,91,and 92 being great years for Eubank, and then I saw that this fight took place in 1997! Definitely past him prime! I am not criticising Calzaghe, he is my favourite fighter of all time!
@@TheVillest He was well past it by then.
TheVillest what a fucking idiotic comment, boxers get to be past their best at various ages, some are great young but fade quickly (Naz, Mike Tyson) and some bloom later on (Mickey Ward, Chisora). Eubank was two years past his prime at this point and still had two tough fights at cruiser after this one. Calzaghe just caught him at the right time, story of his career. He beat three past it elite fighters (Eubank, RJJ and Hopkins), one in his prime (Kessler) and one that was totally overrated (Lacy). I still think Calzaghe was the real deal, but I think he would’ve struggled against the Eubank that beat Benn.
@@punkoid76 Good post and I have to agree.
Well done Chris Eubank. You're a warrior.
Anybody that says eubank was finished at this point is wrong. He gave his career best performances after this fight wit 2 fights against Thompson. Anyone saying Chris was done watch this 2 fights.
WOW, that’s a great fight. Two Champions !
Terrific show of sportsmanship
I never knew he dropped that much weight - a big factor for this fight.
One of the greats! Super bout.
It’s funny, I have watched Joes fights backwards, and this is the toughest fight he’s had. He learned a lot from this fight I’d say. Damn he can take a punch.
Chris was leaving some nice shots off in the beginning until joe turned up😂
I really like Ubank he didn't listen to all the people who kept telling him how a black man should behave and he was a true individual and a warior
What you on about? He got his ass handed to him

This guy was simply the best !!!
But maybe he was not show man
Just real man !!!

Calzaghe vs Kessler was epic! The two greatest at their best went to war and fans were the winners!
One is serious and the other is having fun
Calzagie is probably the greatest boxer who ever lived when you consider he really didn't have a killer punch
Joe wasn't better than Sam Langford.
Sugar ray robinson. Similar ratio.
That is what is so great about Calzaghe...he could have relaxed and played safe in the last few rounds of all his fights but he never did and continued risking it all to fight like a real boxer!
Too big : Calzahhe; too battle-weary : Eubank. Still - total respect for two greats
😂😂😂 Just back myself i dont bother with either. Be my 22nd year going 2 to 3 times a year got loads of friends both thai and farang.. And it was bloody hot.. Enjoy your vlogs wynn. A fellow Welsh man. 👍
good fight
One is extremely tense and the other is extremely loose
Two great fighters.
You think it would've been a different outcome if it was a in his prime Eubank?
Interested in opinions.
Prime Eubank handily beats Joe at this point in his career. Joe fought nobodies up to this point.
Prime Eubank vs Prime Joe, it's a contest. I think Eubank still wins.
The only thing I have trouble with is identifying when Joe was in his prime, other than by age. His career was odd in that it took him forever to fight anyone good and he fought them all at the end of their careers.
@@thatguythatdoesstuff7448 I don't think Eubank would ever beat him, he was very tough but not as skilled or wily as Calzaghe, not to mention the balance of speed and punch output was always in the Welshman's favour. Eubank did well to last this whole fight and had his moments but it wasn't at all close a decision, and it would not have been greatly different in Eubank's prime in my opinion. Regarding Joe's prime, this was probably his prime in terms of punching power and perhaps general fitness, but he obviously wasn't as experienced as he became later, and he became a better boxer later on I think. If Calzaghe had slightly better European competition, perhaps Benn or Eubank in their prime, it would have brought up his standard faster (in particular I think it would have spurred him to be less of a brawler and sharpen his boxing skills against more dangerous and skilful opponents than he fought for the most part in his early years) and he might have been able to take on a prime Roy Jones or Hopkins. My instinct is that he would have lost, at least to Jones just because he was such a ridiculous phenomenon, but perhaps he could have beaten or drawn with Hopkins. The actual fight with Hopkins was marred by the many borderline (and sometimes clearly over the line) illegal and unsporting behaviour of Hopkins, and I think he would have been more confident to fight Calzaghe in a less cagey fashion had he been younger. Calzaghe himself was getting long in the tooth by then, and not as dynamic as we see him in this late 90s era. He wanted to fight these better fighters by the way, but they weren't interested because his name was not a draw in America until he beat Lacy (apparently he got part way through negotiations with Hopkins, but Hopkins' people were offering a very low percentage to Calzaghe and they didn't seem very keen on making the fight happen. I think Joe was seen as good enough to be a risk to face but not a big commercial draw to compensate for that risk, so the biggest names weren't realistically available to him at that stage). Another nice scenario in my opinion would be to have Froch come in a few years earlier and so be a realistic proposition for Calzaghe, I think it would have been an interesting contest. Certainly Froch was tough and not an easy prospect, given his ranginess and decent power and the fact that Calzaghe struggled a bit with tall guys (like Kessler), but as with Kessler I think Calzaghe would have adapted to any problems posed and would have beaten Froch. It would have been entertaining though, I don't doubt that.
Two absolute legends. It's a shame Eubank was well past his best by the time these two met. I think prime Eubank would've given Calzaghe nightmares.
true but eubank was lazy especially after watson, preferred to coast than hurt people. He would be chasing it late to try to win. Calzaghe with his weakazz punches never really suffered that setback.
Joe got lucky with eubanks roy jones and Bernard if they were in their primes he'd have an L or 2 on his resume
💯@@DreDaDon16 i also think rob reid beat him as well.
the shear arrogance of eubanks is astounding lol even when he got dropped ha ha
Shame he's trying to mould his son into same showman as how he was. Chris JR would be a much better fighter and boxer if dad cut the apron strings and told his son to stop the showman act and fight and box
His dad especially told him he must do that to sell fights that was eubank mindset!!
Eubank was NEVER the same fighter after the Watson fight , he wouldn’t go for a finish which is what made him ,🥊🥊👍👍
Lee Corcoran it was the McMillan fight when he really hurt him ( unintentionally)
To be fair though in this fight he didn't have a sniff of a finish in this fight. Still a great fighter and a great fight in general.
Ran Ran why what happened? Iv never seen it ? Was that after Michael Watson ?
@@leecorcoran6174 dont listen to these guys. they obviously dont know their boxing history LOL. nigel benn was the one that hurt gerlad mcclellan, not eubank. not to mention eubank lost his mustard after that first fight against steve collins, not michael watson smh

I liked the fight with him and Roy Jones Jr.
That wasn't a fight. That's why he offered it to Roy after he's been kod twice, lost all titles and was on a downward spiral. Proper shithouse behaviour
Yeah I agree I'm not hating on Joe calzaghi but he never fought one good fighter that I remember in their prime.
is that Richard Branson in the background at @20:17 ? lol
Joe was slick and smooth like a black American fighter. Not your average stiff Euro bum. Definitely one of the best ever in the division

Extremely poor commentary with a very biased commentator. Obviously a huge Eubank fan.
Yeah, ..... He did hit him with a left hook and he put his hands down on the canvas, but I don't think it's a knock down ......... FFS
Chris Eubank is a great fighter
Eubank has a chin, 2 clean back to back hooks that span his head at the end of round five and he was only slightly wobbled!

goods win for joe considering joe was just brit level in the 90s, even though eubank was coming off a string of years of big losses and from 2 divisions away in just one week. eubank still had good chin at this point, even when weight weakened, even though he had no interest in winning.
Lol when did Chris Eubank ever not have an interest in winning a fight once he stepped inside the ring. This is the same man who almost killed Michael Watson in the ring
