- Dave Matthews Band pays tribute to Jimmy Buffett with a cover of "A Pirate Looks at Forty" the day after he passed. This was their opening song on 9/2/23 - the 2nd of their annual three night stand at the Gorge Amphitheatre in Washington.
Dave, Tim, and Jimmy played this song at the New Orleans Jazzfest in 2017. Multicam video of that performance is watchable on this channel at this link: • Dave Matthews, Tim Rey...
Rest in peace JB. - Hudba
That’s a cover worth putting into their rotation. Beautiful tribute
Replace sledgehammer
I'd keep the weight around as well
@@zachgalante3577 You read my mind
I'm not crying, you're crying. 🥺 Well done, lads. Beautiful tribute.
IKR? You can hear, feel the sadness in Dave's voice over the loss of his dear friend. This tribute brings me to tears every time.
My favorite Buffet song. And I'm not crying....much.
Well said 😢❤
More please. Keep the party going,😊 per JB..
So I just watched a video of Dave covering this on the Stern Show. Holy shit is it awesome!!!! I’ve never heard this before and I’m not a big Dave Matthews “guy” but it is incredible. The sound of it is impeccable. If you get time, i recommend checking it out.
This is maybe the coolest tribute to Jimmy of all of them I’ve seen. The day after. Opening song. Epic.
Also: This very day, my 17 yr old daughter got up and came to the kitchen as she does every morning. I told her Jimmy had passed. She made her coffee without a word. When she turned from the coffee pot she was crying like a baby. She and I went to see Jimmy live several times when she was small. I would give her a budget to pick us out our Parrothead outfits and she would order them up every time we went. Her first time was the oil spill concert on the Ala Gulf coast. She was 2. She plays acoustic, electric and bass. I think Jimmy would be proud to know he had an impact on a 17 year old female musician that never met him like he had on her. RIP, my friend. We’re sure gonna miss you. I didn’t think Jimmy Buffett was allowed to die
Parrot heads come in all ages🙂
I was at my first Labor Dave Weekend as a milestone birthday present from and with my two adult daughters. One is named after the Lovely Isabella from Changing Channels. Buffett was always in the mix when we were on the lake. My boat was named the Incommunicado. As we were walking back to camp after night one of Labor Dave Weekend the news broke that Jimmy had passed. We were all just in disbelief. I had a hard time stopping the tears all day Saturday. My daughters both commented that they felt like a part of their childhood had died. All three of us wrapped our arms around each other and bawled when Dave opened with this song. It was my favorite night of the three with tons of emotion throughout the set. Dave also played the Weight, and debuted Just Breathe that night. SO happy your daughter and mine will keep the party going as Jimmy wanted. Fins Up!
Aye
Another beautiful tribute to a musician that was woven into American culture for 4 decades. Perhaps one of the most important and influential songwriters in all of music. Crazy thing is it's just I can't believe he passed. Thought he'd be here forever along with Warren, David, Prince, Cash, Peart, Eddie etc. Rough few years.
Thank you Dave, this meant a lot, Jimmy leaving us still hurts.
Nothing but Class from this band. Great moment!
Top notch first class beautiful heartfelt honest. Respect.
WOW, I was at the New Orleans Jazz Fest in 2017 when Jimmy Buffet joined Dave Matthews Band on stage to perform their wonderful version of this song. RIP Jimmy
You can hear the sadness in Dave's voice...❤
Thanks for putting this together. Great to see so many tributes to Jimmy B. This makes me love Dave Matthews even more.
Wonderful tribute to everyone's favorite pirate who is now eating cheeseburgers in the ultimate paradise. So many superstars are honoring Jimmy by singing his songs. I would love to see everyone come together and do a concert and raise some money for his/their favorite charitable organizations.
I'm not a great big fan of Dave Matthews. No hack on anyone that is, he's just not my thing.
But I am a big fan of Jimmy Buffett, and this tribute to him was real stand-up, honest, and well, gentlemanly thing for Dave and the band to do. Kudos.
Right there with you. There's a reason all these tributes do the same song too. I think it hit a lot of people.
@@The2ndFirst Well, Buffett has a whole repertoire of 'regret songs', and he did some pretty good covers himself. His version of 'Come Monday' is worth a listen.
But yeah, 'Pirate at 40' is pretty signature.
@@carlhicksjr8401 Come Monday is a fantastic song
Look at that sunset! I do believe Jimmy was with them 💖🌞
Great tribute from the Dave Matthews Band! You guys nailed it. RIP Jimmy, we love and miss you!
Sad reason behind playing this song but it was amazing to witness
Gotta go fishin down to rock bottom again.
With just a few friends

Long Live Buffett
I took my son in law, who was the Dave Matthews fan, to see him a few years. After a 2 1/2 hour rain delay at an out door venue, we saw a shortened show. Not really my type of music, but the musicianship was simply outstanding. This was a great and perhaps unexpected tribute. 5 🌟
Don’t think I’ve ever seen a more beautiful tribute. Dave and the band crushed this, and the Gorge and God and Jimmy did all the rest. Rest easy Pirate and thank you.
I like DMB, but im not a huge fane like so many are.....But this was amazing....hes the only one that I've found that didnt play Margaritaville. Jimmy has SO many songs that were way better than his biggest hit. Dave somehow played this in his own style but didn't change the song one bit.
Just a heads up that there is a live version of this Dave & Tim did with Jack Johnson back in 2008 or something. I believe it’s on the Best Of Kōkua Festival album. It’s probably somewhere on CZcams, too.
Dave has played this a bunch over the years. He’s said it’s his favorite Buffett song. He also played it with Mr. Buffett himself back in 2017 at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.
Same same. Brilliant tribute. What a vocal too.

Love to see all these bands pay tribute to Jimmy.
I was there. It was very nice. Great pick considering.
@Copperpot5 Just gotta say you been killing it for so many years. Thanks for all the great content!
(DMB needs to put you on the payroll. 😂 Maybe not.)
Please someday do this whole show. Thanks for always editing thease amazing videos.
There are two different people that recorded the entire N2 and posted it to CZcams
Thanks for a great tribute...we'll all miss you, you old pirate....
Woohoo! I was waiting to see what your first release from the Gorge 2023 would be! Sweet! Thank you.
As always, Well done my friend. Thanks so much for taking the time to assemble this edit. Awesome!
This was one of my top two favorite moments from the weekend… RIP Jimmy
Great Version. Rest easy Jimmy
Grew up listening to Buffett in my teen years, huge Parrothead....saw him 17 times. In my 20s was turned onto PHish the day before Big Cypress Millennium show by hippy girls that stopped to eat at the restaraunt i worked at on their way to Big Cypress. That turned me onto PHish and the whole JamBand scene. Saw DMB 2x here in South FL, so much respect.
Dave thank you for that beautiful rendition of Pirate, just gives me more reasons to have a deeper respect for DMB...not that i did't have huge respect in the 1st place
Great footage from a Saturday opener!
Thanks for putting this up rest in peace Jimmy
Being there, this was an amazing night! Flanked by my three young boys, it was a night to remember. Thank you, DMB! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you, Dave. Wonderful tribute!
Nice looking video, never cared much about this tune. Now it's a favorite. Funny how time slips away. Cheers!
Beautiful version
Great cover of a great song…RIP JB
very classy move
Pure class.
Perfect. What a scene. 🦈
Thabk you Dave. I keep coming back to this. I'd love to see you cover Come Monday
That was a really good cover…thank you 🏴☠️
JB’s smilin, well done
Perfect.
Thanks for putting this together. Was lucky (or unlucky) to be there for this in person.
I’m guessing everyone knew the words and were singing along.
Thank you for this and to all that contributed!
Encore!!!
WOW! AMAZING! THANK YOU FOR POSTING!
Excellent DMB!! Great way to tribute Jimmy! Way to go Chester love it!
Beautiful!❤
Dave is much like Jimmy. A hugely popular artist yet never had serious commercial success.
As usual ChesterCopperpot5 -- Thank You 💔❤
Been stuck in my head since Saturday, thanks for the video
❤❤❤❤ Rest in Music Heaven Jimmy, we will miss the summer grass skirt dancing 💃
Great job...as always ..Thanks a bunch J ♥
you are the best, thanks for sharing
❤👊
✨❤✨
COPPERPOT- I said it before, and I’ll say it again: I owe you a handshake and a thank you. You are awesome.
😭😭😭😭😭😭
This is awesome. I love the version with Jack Johnson.
Has he performed this more than these two?
I knew you'd work on songs from that night. I'm waiting for your edit of The Weight. 😊❤
This song doesn’t appear on DMB Almanac. Is this the first time played? This 100% fits DMB perfectly and should be a regular cover IMO. And I’m not really a Buffet fan. Don’t dislike him just never got it.
Jimmy should have ran for President. My parents and I are dems. A bunch of my aunts and uncles are Republicans. Yet, no matter what, we’ve been all seeing Jimmy together for the last two decades.
Love this African American!! 😅😅
The whole Dave's African-American was never funny but okay
Thanks for posting, copperpot 🙏🥲🙏
