Every Hero’s Journey

- The hero’s journey has been the stuff of story from earliest times. Today’s popular heroes include Harry Potter, Frodo, Spiderman, Neo, and Luke Skywalker. They are all ordinary guys who suddenly receive the Call to Adventure, mythologist Joseph Campbell’s term for the beginning of the journey. The would-be hero first declines, then answers the call; he suffers tests and trials, succeeds with help from unexpected sources, and returns with the gifts of all he has learned. The hero’s journey is the human story--we are all called to be more, often in seemingly mundane ways. As we go to work, raise children, and experience setbacks, we are called to sacrifice personal interest and ego-driven desires for the sake of something greater. The hero’s journey is a metaphor for the inner adventure Jung described as individuation, ‘the treasure hard to attain’ and life’s true goal.
HERE'S THE DREAM WE ANALYZE:
"The dream consisted of 3 segments. In the first, I was outdoors, looking up, observing a group of men, they were engaged in some project involving large, structural pieces of architecture e.g. old stone walls. One item was made of clay and included a large carving, I think it was of a face. The men had made a mistake in handling the clay, so that it appeared to have become moldy: white spots had appeared on it. I thought or heard a voice saying something like "they didn't appreciate that the clay is alive, it breathes, it absorbs and retains moisture." The men were trying to remedy the situation: they poured red wine on the clay, as if that would destroy the mold. In the second part of the dream, I was indoors with other women, in a small, bright jewelry shop or workshop. A young woman had brought a tiny, delicate watch that had broken. She also brought wonderful, intricate drawings of the watch and the repairs needed. With another woman, I began planning the repair. I was confident we could repair it, but my companion was fretful, fearing we wouldn't be able to. Her worries didn't seem to interfere with my confidence. I continued to explain two possible ways we could repair the watch. In the third part of the dream, I was neither clearly indoors nor outdoors, but in a large, bright space, seemingly boundless, maybe like a marquee or gazebo outdoors. A woman had given me a task: I was to write, beautifully, the list of guest names for a wedding. A man was nearby, I think he was somehow involved, too. He was a little effeminate. I was left pretty much alone, and the paper with the names was crumpled and stained."

I am an artist, and that dream really spoke to me. A beautiful sculpture of a face, beautiful drawings of the watch, a guest list that has to be written beautifully, are all concerns of an artist or an artisan. Beauty is the world of an artist. Perhaps her inner artist is wanting to get to work and create beautiful things, but it is also having a self-confidence crisis. It's saying, even If I was trusted with that job, I don't think I have the skills needed to do it successfully. I hope, whatever career path she chooses, that the dreamer will start making art and, through that, find her self-confidence as an artist.
The Millennium Falcon, a ship on the wing
A crew full of archetypes with something to bring
The wise man, the Wookiee
The loner, the rookie
And who, might I ask, is controlling this thing?
Joseph u must be such a good story teller to ur kids 😀😀
Dear Deb, I love when you ask what psychological qualities it takes to "slay the monster of darkness", that really opened up the conversation beautifully for me. This is a really wonderful episode, which I have returned to several times as I find the courage to keep going with my own journey.
As a person who does volunteering in substance misuse and uses cognitive tools with SMART Recovery, and as someone who has always felt repelled by AA, my ears really pricked up when at 8.26 they talk of The Force , and for the first time ever I linked it with the HIGHER Power concept in the 12 step programme.
AA is the ultimate hero's journey, all 12 Steps journeys are.
Hey all,
I heard several episodes of your helpful and informative podcasts, and this is the most lively I've heard Joseph be. Nice to experience that side of him, haha.
Thank you all for your work.
Best regards!
So funny 😂 you guys have such great chemistry 🎉 thankyou so much 🙏❤
If one is destined to make the journey to the depths, it seems rather impossible in my experience to avoid the call. The ego can run but it cannot hide. The Self is infinitely more powerful. In such a case, the Self will often over run the ego and will arrange painful outer circumstances to bring the ego to its knees. The Self as Numinous Spirit does not tolerate misbehavior from the ego. Everything the Self does is an act of love and this sometimes includes discipline that can be experienced as harsh. An encounter with the Self manifesting as the Solar aspect is the "tremendum" in Mysterium Tremendum and is enough to humble the ego and induce deep repentance. The ego is used to being "in charge" and "in control". However, living from the Center requires the deepest and most sincere surrender and humility. Otherwise inflation and alienation result. These are lessons I learned the hard way. Peace.
Don't forget dune, the water of life.
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant! I'm working with protreptik, and The Hero's Journey could be an excellent way to reflect on your values and choices in life. Thank you.

27:48 the only lone hero that springs to mind is Don Quixote, who, of course, was unable to distinguish the true from the false

Look no further than Caravaggio's The Calling of Saint Matthew for a powerful visual representation of the refusal of the call
Beautiful amplification.
