    Episode 101
    5 Part mini-series
    • 3rd Battle of Kharkov ...
This nice combat footage is of the Finnish Volunteer Battalion which was part of Rgt Nordland in the 5. SS PzGr Div Wiking. In addition to more from this reel, we’ll continue with the original German combat report that was written by a member of the 7th PzD at the completion of the 3rd Battle of Kharkov in early 1943. We’ll touch on the Grischino Massacre and see some excellent footage of Felix Steiner, Division Wiking’s commander. Finally I’ll show a 1943 parade of a German tank tank in Norway so stick around. This is part 5 in this series covering the battle. You’ll find links to the other parts at the end of this video
Page 1 of the report explains the combat operations of three German divisions, the 7th and the 11th PzDs, and the 5. SS Wiking. It’s covered in part 1 of this series. Page two and three of the report are translated Soviet communications describing the strenuous situation that the powerful Mobile Group Popov found itself in. The content of these pages can be found in Part 2, 3 and 4. The series contains plenty of rare Waffen SS footage that you almost certainly have never seen.
This is exquisite early footage of the Rgt. Nordland in Russia. We have the patreon supporters to thank for having access to footage like this and originals like the one we are looking at today. If you are not yet a supporter please consider becoming one. As a token of appreciation supporters get exclusive access to film material that can’t be shown here. Open a free account on Military1945.com and take a look at an example clip.
Page 4 of the report begins with the Soviet officer’s final communication to his superiors made on February 19 before being overrun. After that is a concluding detailed list of combat losses inflicted on the enemy written by a German officer.
All preparations have been made to regain control of the situation around Krassnoarmejskoje.
The Commander of the 4th Gard Tank Corps
Guard Major General of Armor Polubojarew
Chief of Staff of the 4th Guard Tank Corps
    Guard Colonel Nagaibakow
    -- GERMAN REPORT CONTINUES --
In the time period from 7.1. until and including the 27.2.1943
the following has been captured or destroyed by the 7th Pz.Div.
    4 Airplanes
144 Cannons (3 of them rocket launchers)
    276 Anti-tank guns
    354 Tanks
    414 Vehicles
    70 Mortars
    317 Machineguns
    114 Anti-tank rifles
a large quantity of small arms
1 Russian field hospital with 8 doctors
    2902 soldiers were captured
During the 3rd Battle of Kharkov the Soviet losses amounted to 45,000 killed in action and around 41,000 wounded. In comparison the Germans lost 4,500 killed and about 700 wounded.
In addition, the following German equipment was retaken
    Locomotives
    Transport train
    Communications train
    Tank repair garage
    German tanks
    Tank destroyers
46 German, Italian and Romanian soldiers and civilians were freed by the division from Soviet captivity.
This German report includes documents supposedly captured from the field headquarters of the 4th Guard Tank Corps which had allegedly been responsible for the Grischino Massacre. That the Germans freed 46 soldiers and civilians shows that the 4th Guard Tank Corps had evidently not killed everyone. It’s also odd that this intelligence report written by those who arrived first to scene, doesn’t mention the massacre at all. I would have expected that. We’ll certainly be covering the specific war crimes in depth in future videos.
Here we see 5th PzGr Div. Wiking’s commander, Felix Steiner, awarding medals to members of the Regiment Nordland. I believe that it is the Finnish Volunteer Btl. You can see he is wearing the Order of the Cross of Liberty that is a Finnish medal that he was awarded in June of 1942.
Steiner was a capable leader who was well liked by his troops. After having the charges against him dropped at Nuremberg, in 1953 he was recruited by the CIA.

The Third battle of Kharkov was a huge accomplishment considering the whole 6th army was completely destroyed in stalingrad. If the German army did not pull off this miracle the whole army group south would have been in jeopardy. Ig was because of the success of the third battle of Kharkov for the Germans. There would not have been the battle of kursk. But after the Germans lost far to many men and equipment. After kursk. It was the long retreat back to Berlin.

My wife was born and raised in Kharkov (Kharkiv). Her father was an engineer (sapper) in the Red Army and was awarded 2 "Orders of the Red Star" for his service in the second and third battle of Kharkov. For laying mines and for disabling mines. They are displayed in our home, along with my father's awards as a tank commander in the US 3rd Armored Division.
274,000 people were killed in Kharkov in WW2. There is a beautiful "Memorial of Glory" park in Kharkov in their memory. Kharkov was finally liberated on August 23, 1943 in the aftermath of the Battle of Kursk. Kharkov is near the Russian border, just south of Belgorad, Russia and Prokoravka, Russia. where the southern thrust of the battle of Kursk began.
Today, as I type this, some of our family is sheltering in the basements of their apartment building in Kharkov, and some have evacuated to the area around the city of Visokiy, SW of Kharkov, as the city is once again under attack by invading Russians.

The thing i like most about the footage you show here is the quality of the film itself. Most of it looks like it has never been off the shelf before and with just minor blemishes throughout. It is just so amazing to me that so much of this footage has never been used for "main stream" documentaries that have been produced in the last 80 years. Its almost like the World At War series in the early 1970s set the standard for usable and not usable footage to be shown. Thank you for breaking that mold!

The Finnish SS Regiment Nordland was famous of never losing the battle. It was ordered to Stalingrad front by Himmler in the plan to break the encirclement and save the 6th army. Hitler, however denied the retreat and Finns were pulled back and eventually sent home to finland, where they continued to ight communists al the way to armistice, Late 1944. in big fights in Tali-Ihantala, the largest battle in scandinavia, russians were pushed back and Finland was the only country on "the losing side" tht was not invaded and remained democratic repblic. Very important for russians to remember now in 2022...

Never seen a channel like this - and I subscribe to many WW2 channels! I appreciate the rare footage and objectivity. The objectivity (to the extent possible) is very good. War crimes were committed by all parties of the war. Yet, organized war crimes were committed mainly by the Germans and Russians. Still, 1.6 million German soldiers were killed in US, UK, French, Canadian, and Russian POW camps AFTER WW2 had ended! And only around 30% of the soldiers in Germany were actually NAZIs (members of the NAZI party)! But in war, propaganda is the main weapon, as we see now in Ukraine! Looking forward to seeing further material. Thank you!

Peace is a lie, there is only statu quo OR war. Only sometimes there is true cooperation and dialogue for a common goal, but it never lasts.
Stop your subhuman thinking. God has been dead for more then 200 years now, to keep that belief standing, is to be only drove by ignorance more then anything else.

Pitiful, what a waste good genes.
I do not hate Jesus but those who speaks (in) his in name 2000 years after.
And those who disregard well established reality over a man who knew nothing of are physical reality back then.
You should understand that the realm of jugement is not after death as you might think; But to the generations that "succeed" after another and who learns from past events.
Creepling reality behind fallen gods and false realms where you can crawl back to your ego is weak minded, it's your choice, either you decide to nullify reality just for confort.
      OR
Fall and rise back, that's was mistakes and learning are; Movements of thoughts that allow you to grow: to comprehend and doubt on our current understanding of reality.
Doubt is not a weakness, it doesn't restrain you from learning, falls gods on the other "hand" does.
