Funguys
Infected often don’t infect. They are violent by nature. As Tess warned Ellie early on: “You’re not immune to being torn apart.”
It's very strongly suggested that you are trapped in your mind after you're infected in the games.
There's a point in the first game where infected are feasting on a guy, and in-between gobbles the infected is sobbing heavily. It's disturbing af
I love Maple’s blunt “ we just going to ignore that Mushroom man?”
Dooo you know the Mushroom Man who livveess in headripoff lane?
That's is the bloater the big boss of the game.
Kathleen contradicting herself/being a hypocrite with the "what makes him (your bro) more important (than my brother)?" is VERY intentional. Love makes people hypocritical.
Fun fact: Adam Basil, the actor who played the Bloater in this Episode is 6'6 Foot Tall (1.95 cm), and the full Bloater suit weight is at least 80 Pounds (40 Kg).
decent point made by maple about consciousness. i’ve read a lot of comments about that the infected brains are kept alive, while all motorfunctions are taken over. Essentially every person is locked in fungus prisons. even more horrific than the stereotypical zombie turning. reminds me a lot of the ending of being john malkovich
Perry's death was a great game Easter egg. I've seen Joel's head get ripped off just like that an uncomfortable amount of times lol
...The guy who played Perry...also voiced Tommy in the game! EE inception 😮
The reason why they had Sam asked if it’s still you inside, is the way the fungus works. It controls you and your motor functions, but you still have access to your all the functions of your brain. You are basically stuck in a endless hell of being a puppet for the rest of your life, and can’t do anything about it. It is basically like Get Out, and you are stuck in that sunken place, but there is no flash that can wake you up, you are just stuck permanently as a passenger.
i wasnt sure at first but chads decision to have these two react together was a great one
it takes a while with certain projects to go from recording to publishing and so some things have been in the works for a while. TLOU was started some time ago and we didnt immediately realize that with tv shows it's better to have two people so they can discuss theories and predictions together.
@@Diegesis Is maples reaction to the first episodes only on patreon? Or does she have her own channel? The preview/intro got me hella confused like "did i miss something?" :D
I know we all want people to run, but MOST people's response is shock/ staying still. That bystander effect is REAL
The bloater is interesting, because once it has lived long enough to become one, it makes sense for its focus to lean more towards itself than the infecting. To keep existing it needs to feed and if it feeds off the body it's in eventually there's no body left, so while it still will infect, just killing things until it isn't being attacked and then eating them to keep going would be its first instinct.
Yeah, the body is still alive, without a living host it cannot move it, so after so long it needs to use an outside source of nutrition instead of the hosts body. It’s really interesting, and it’s probably why it’s so big, amassing enough fat to be able to use the body more so it won’t burn out the host too quickly
The clicker girl that goes into the vehicle with Ellie is a 9 year old contortionist named Skye Cowton. Her popularity skyrocketed after that scene... that inhuman rolling slink into the back seat was chilling.
Totally agreed about Kathleen; the word I think you guys articulated but didn’t quite say is “selfish”-- which she was. Kathleen only thought about herself and how devastated she felt, and the pain and hate she had for the ppl(Henry, Sam and all the collaborators), who caused her pain-- that’s why she didn’t give two flying phooooos about anything her brother said DIRECTLY TO HER about not getting revenge, it was all about her. And because of Kathleen’s unique position, and the fact that so many related to her, that’s why many of them followed her; plus, when that many ppl are full of fear, hate and desperate sadness due to FEDRA’s savagery(which only intensified the bleak and depressing existence in a post-apocalyptic world), they were ripe for the picking for someone so foolishly selfish, but seemingly right person for the Hell they were in, to take over(i.e., Kathleen). Even with her ppl being ripped apart, the infected swarming them and instant death all around, Kathleen could only think about killing Henry and his kid brother(Sam) and a kid(Elle) she didn’t even know… she gave herself, to selfishness, it led to madness, and finally the undoing of herself, most- if not all her most loyal ppl, and the very likely and inevitable total destruction of their WHOLE community who had just liberated itself; she is beyond the textbook example of a terrible leader, and a truly vile and horrible person.
Well said.
Love having Maple join Arianna for the rest of the watch through. Been looking forward to reactions to this episode and the ground scene.
Personally I thought Kathleen was very realistic. A lot of people aren’t logical, some people are selfish and self fulfilling, seeking their own emotional gratification. I imagine once her brother died, her revenge was focused on FEDRA, and she was able to rally the people to take FEDRA down, but once the war was done she started slipping, making less and less sense, as she was still solely motivated by vengeance. Not every one does the most logical thing all the time especially when big emotions are involved.
The big guy, the bloater, wasn’t trying to infect people, it was trying to defend the smaller infected.
@@RosaParksWasWyt not everything is so blatantly surface level and obvious. Her demeanor and the fact she commands the respect of this people forces you to question the situation. Was she really hardcore during the uprising? Did she have a knack for tactics and strategy that led her side to victory? Is she riding the coattails of her much beloved brother and being offered loyalty by association? Did she use his death and her people’s desire for revenge to take their loyalty? Would that loyalty even have lasted that long (the uprising just recently happened shortly before Joel and Ellie arrived)? Does her soft voiced nature put people at ease and make them enjoy being around her? What aspects of her history and relationship with her people have we not seen? There is a lot to think about if you take actually take a second to do so. Personally I am fine with not getting the answers as well and filling it in with my imagination. Not everything needs to be spelled out. The fact that she is soft voiced yet cruel and leading these people is what makes her interesting. And yes it is realistic to me. People find all sorts of odd traits charismatic. People will follow the worst leaders if people like them. We don’t know what 20 years of desperation and surviving in a zombie apocalypse does to a person. I think most people would want to follow and latch on to whatever tiny bit of light may give them hope. To these people it was Kathy’s brother, and then Kathy. Personally I have seen stranger things in my life when it comes to human nature, and it is the particular oddness of the situation that makes it realistic and believable to me.
Excellent acting by Bella in the scene where Henry shoots himself.
Her whimpers killed me and instinctively gave me a fatherly urge to hug her
The swarm scene is incredible good and creepy For sure one of the best action scenes I've ever seen
Henry's first murder was his own little brother. It must be pure horror to realize what you just did.
The "I'm sorry" at the end got me so hard. I cried 4 of 5 episodes and I love this show
in regards to the infected being conscious or not I think it's more of a hive colony mind and each infected falls into a group with a specific function like ants or bees. The bloaters roll has evolved to protecting the colony more than just spreading the infection. One of the 3 best episodes of the season.
Arianna: “Dude, it’s really gonna suck if we have to watch her kill him”….
…nope…much worse than that. 😅
This show has made a living off of "So how can we make the usual horror trope more emotionally traumatic?" 😅
According to a journal article in Cell Host Microbe. Brain Behav Immun. 2005;19:334-44., Lactobacillus could affect anxiety levels, while Campylobacter jejuni could have the opposite result in mice studies. B. infantis 35624 raises tryptophan levels, which is one of the ways you get serotonin. (Neuroscience. 2010;170:1179-88) Toxoplasma gondii caused rats to be less afraid of the scent of cats (PLoS ONE. 2011;6:e2327)
The point being that there is a hypothesis that claims that bacteria is already affecting your behavior.
Not to add to your disturbance of fungus, molds and other things that grow in the night, but the yellow one in the intro is real as well. It is called a slime mold, and it is actually intelligent! It can figure out the most efficient way to get to food and can also remember things!
13:58 the “pho” reference got me good 😂
Edit: I know what I’m eating for lunch tomorrow
Great reaction! Had the same thoughts running through my mind first time watching this episode. So many emotions lol. Always look forward to you all’s videos! Keep up the good work! 🤙
14:35 That big guy is called a Bloater. That’s what happens to victims who’ve been infected for a very, very long time. It’s what the fungus does to the body. That monster was once a human.
The tunnel in the game is pretty tough tbh. They removed 90% of the infected in the show. I get it though it makes it more believable because in the game you have to wipe out crazy amounts.
It not just fight or flight anymore, there's also freeze, and that's gonna be me 😂 I definitely freeze, no just kill me, I won't last long anyway
There are lots of tunnels around Kansas City from Limestone mining. So probably not the same one. There are particularly huge tunnel system called "Sub-tropolis" that contains almost 10.5 miles (16.9 km) of illuminated, paved roads and several miles of railroad track. You can drive semi-trucks into it. There are working businesses that all take advantage of the stable temperature in the old mine, and essentially is a city itself when everyone is at work there.
Why worry about that humngous Zungus among us? He was a fun guy!
❤❤❤
lol go to bed grandpa
That’s why they brought in the comic book with the catch line endure and survive. Even though it seems redundant like Henry says they showed the difference in those two terms in this episode. Sam was not able to survive in this new world and Henry was not able to endure Sam’s death.
Technically, all throughout the entire series (even in the games) they never called them zombies (which means undead or dead that came back to life). They're called "infected". They're still alive human beings covered in highly parasitic fungal infections. Also note the part in episode 3 where Joel mentions "dead people can't get infected". This very much means the everyone is alive without an ounce of control over their body, which makes fungi resemble some form of consciousness. Note also what the speaker said at episode "to spread the infection by any means necessary" meaning the big mushroom guy (we call them bloaters from the games) are defensive organisms and they attack anyone who think is a threat, same with musroom heads called clickers (although clickers rarely kill). A form of self preservation. This is highly based on very factual cordyceps infection of various insects (especially ants) that spreads fungus all around and at the end of its life, it attaches to a branch where it can explode spores.
this channel is 10/10
you're too kind good sir
Hear me out here... running there would have been utter stupid for Henry, Sam and Ellie - with like 20 guys with machine guns whose sole purpose of being there is to shoot you. They can't see what's happening if all the men with guns are all occupied. They don't have the luxury of of camera angles.
Another perspective for you.
19:14 Elle is gonna live with that guilt for a while. She couldn’t save him but she could’ve at least kept her promise and stayed awake with him so he wouldn’t have to die alone. 😢
"I llllooovvvve mushrooms." 😂
Whoever invented off the shoulder dresses is a fuckin genius ❤
found the pipi+ member
And a fun fact: in Brazil, these dresses are literally called "tomara que caia" (which means "I hope it falls" 😂)
15:47 LMAO 🤣
This is gold.
My favourite part was when u spliced in the Phooooooo 😂
Lol
I had the same question you did when I saw the bloater just attack everyone and not do anything to spread the fungus.
As for *Sam* asking _if it's still you inside,_ I wouldn't make any more of that than just a little kid asking a question out of fear.
the games do imply that sam is correct and people are locked in their minds while their bodies do zombie stuff
the largest living thing is a fungi its 3.4miles big lol called the humongous fungus
Yall waaaay overthinking the Bloater (the big zombie). Remember this is based off a video game. Bloaters were like bosses in the game. Infected (stalkers) that survive long enough turn into Clickers. Clickers that survive long enough turn into bloaters, the largest and most fungally developed of the infected. They just have 20ish years of fungal growth on their body, turning into armor and whatnot. They aren't "sentient" in the way humans are, but they still have a survival instinct and react to hostile threats in their area with violence.
Zunguses... works for me. And cudos on the ad for pho soup noodles at just the right moment. Made me lol. Yes, Arianna, I also enjoy Vietnamese noodles. Odd time to bring it up. Haha
wait, i can't tell if you're meming or not.
They don't show it here, but in the game the big zombie guy will throw balls at you that explode into spores. But I think their focus is less on spreading the infection and more about killing threats. They have armor so molotovs and explosives are the most effective against them.
I don't want to suggest that Kathleen is, in any way, a good person, but I think you missed a major part of why she hated Henry. It wasn't ONLY that Henry got her brother killed. It was that he collaborated with FEDRA (the "Official" government representatives at the time) and FEDRA was murdering, raping, torturing, and generally abusing everyone in the city prior to Kathleen leading a revolution that overthrew FEDRA. Collaborators were people who helped the govt. snitched on their neighbors, and generally saved themselves by turning in their neighbors. That had been an ongoing state of affairs for 20 years -- Kathleen had a lot of pent-up anger -- 20 years of being abused on a regular basis by FEDRA. Henry was just the person she attached that anger to. Doesn't make her good by any means, but makes her hate a little more understandable.
13:59 Well damn now I want some pho!!! 😆
Intense brutally heartbreaking episode
not sure if anyone commented about the stages of the infected. The runners are the lowest level, then its stalkers, then there are clickers, then stage 4 is Bloaters which i think they have been infected about 10-20 years or so but not sure.
Molds and fungus mostly processes decaying matter it’s actually pretty beneficial as long as you have a respect for it like fire.
14:35 BLOATER!!!!!! 😂
We still need Maple’s reaction to episode 3!
The Giant "mushroom man" is called a Bloater and in the game you play as Joel and have to fight one in a High School basketball court/gymnasium!
A lot of people have no empathy for Kathleen, yet if we were in her shoes, most of us would have asted the exact same way if a sibling, family member, or loved one was taken from us and betrayed by someone we trusted.
As for fight or flight, there's really nothing to say you're going to outrun these things that easily.
I'd chalk both of these up as Monday morning quarterbacking.
I mean, she’s a weak, bad person. Yes, there are many people who would act like her, but that doesn’t make it acceptable. She’s terrible and deserves to be recognized as such.
also fight or flight is a huge oversimplification of how people react to stress, because it's actually "fight, flight or freeze"
It's so cool seeing u both together
"The Zungus Among Us" first draft name for "The Last of Us"
I love mushrooms
Those that know: 👌🍄
Those that dont:🥰
The one on the left seems to have partaken of an herb. 🌿 😂
Zungus. I dig it.
"I'm sorry."😪
Absolutely loved kathleen in this ep ❤ gave the npcs of the game true gravitas that was missing in game..
Bruh, you really asking them to just run without shielding themselves from the flying bullets coming from everywhere?
Bloaters have a hard shell but they aren't invincible. Fire, Pipe Bombs and Shotgun Shells work to take them down. But regular bullets do dick and you're gonna be headless quick.
YA'LL TWO ARE THE CATS PAJAMAS
Do mushrooms have a motive? 😂👍🏻
I've noticed that most people side with Henry's decision making to rat on/turn in Kathleen's brother to be more than likely executed by Fedra in return for Leukemia medicine, yet think her motivations are wrong because she wants revenge for her murdered brother. Kill my brother for your own selfish reasons & i'd do the same as Kathleen until I had my revenge on the killer/s. Oh yeah has no one else noticed Kathleen definately has been eating more than her share of food by the looks of it for the past 2 decades compared to the body size of just about everyone else we've seen under Fedra's control (except for the Bloater of course).
it has more to do with henry is likeable and kathleen is a karen
~Kathleen~ Karen was very Umbridge-y. The passive aggressive smugness about their self righteous bull makes your skin crawl. It's gaslight-y so it just makes you want to argue which they don't allow.
Yall just be bringing the darkness to springtime lol True Detective, Last of Us, The Pacific.
Kathleen only lost her brother 10 days ago.1
You two are awesome🙂
Kathleen didn't care about her brother, she didn't that he was killed, just that she lost him, she only cared about how it affected her. That's why she didn't give a shit he wouldn't have wanted her to get revenge, she wasn't getting revenge for him, she was getting revenge for herself.
Super late to these reactions, but are Maple's episodes 1-4 reactions still Patreon only?
they are. by the time we got the team rolling, the timing was super awkward and wouldnt have made sense :/
@@Diegesis Understood. Thanks!
Endure and Survive. They sound redundant, but they’re not.
One can survive a gunshot wound; however enduring the pain that comes after is a much different battle. Henry survived his brother’s death, but he didn’t endure the loss.
But can you endure without surviving?
I was really hoping poor maple was going to be spared this. Seriously my first thought when I saw the thumbnail was “oh no poor maple” and this episode as well.😭😭😭. I think this episode puts the title of the game into clarity because how many people have really asked themselves could I be the last of my species. Can I keep going when everyone falls away. More than being strong physically am I strong enough mentally to make this all makes sense, and not just want to check out like Henry. Deep shit.
The point of this show is sadness...I was convinced by this episode.
1:05 Ariana was about to go deep 😂
Let's have a moment of silence for all those guns and cars left on the street in KC. RIP.
Maple luvs a funguy🍄‼️Haha☣️😁 lol
Not that it matters to the girls but, I like it when they wear glasses.
They're blind and are attracted to noise. Hiding and not running usually works best. Shhhhhhhh
Not sure I understood the soup reference at 13:59.
that soup is called pho. pronounced fuh
Wonderful reaction. As someone who played the game, I hoped against hope they would deviate from this ending 😢
That was a chungus zungus.
another banger
another banger from diet jesus
