In 2003, a mass fungal infection sparks a global pandemic and turns its victims into bloodthirsty attackers. Joel flees with his daughter Sarah as the fungus starts to spread, but she is killed by a soldier who attacks them, while Joel is saved by his brother Tommy. Twenty years later, Joel lives in the Boston quarantine zone managed by the Federal Disaster Response Agency (FEDRA) as a smuggler with his partner Tess. When Tommy fails to contact them from his location in Wyoming, they try to buy a car battery from a local dealer but it is instead sold to the Fireflies, a rebel group that opposes FEDRA. Attempting to retrieve it, they find the deal has gone awry and Marlene, the Fireflies' wounded leader, begs Joel and Tess to take young Ellie to the Old State House in exchange for supplies. They are caught by a soldier while sneaking out and Ellie stabs him when he tests them for infection. When the soldier tries to shoot her, Joel beats him to death. Tess realizes Ellie is infected, but Ellie promises them she will not turn. They enter a biological contamination area to flee the pursuing FEDRA soldiers.

When they take out Nana, remember this is their longtime neighbor they love. It's not an "it" to them. Also they have no idea how the infection spreads at this point so keeping a wrench covered with an infected person's blood would be dangerous and stupid. The infection isn't airborne in the series, although there are spores in the game. After consulting with scientists they learned everyone would be infected way too quick that way so they removed them. Cordyceps has to get into the blood stream to travel to the brain, so the infected (they aren't zombies, they're still alive in there) bite or injure and get the fungus into the open wound. It began in grain/flour. Sarah, Joel, and Tommy were not infected out of sheer dumb luck. No pancake mix that morning, they refused the biscuits, Mrs. Adler made gross raisin cookies no one wanted to eat, and Joel forgot to bring home a cake. Dumb luck. Tommy is not Joel's friend, he's his younger brother. Both Pedro AND Bella died horribly in GoT :D One to the Mountain crushing his head, the other to a Giant crushing her body.

i needed to know if the infected were really there (I have never played the game) so i went to "the last of us wiki" and for what i understood the infected are still conscious to what is happening to them in stage 1 and 2 of the infection, basically once the fungus takes the whole brain is when the human consciousness dies. Terrifying.

Nico killed it at Sarah too, comes right after her mom it seems. The whole cast did a great job capturing the characters. Cool to see some more of Anna Torv as well, loved her in Fringe. I didn't even recognized her until another CZcamsr pointed it out that she's playing Tess.
But also in that moment the world of grief and sympathy Gabriel Luna conveyed with just, ".....Joel....."

The same writer who wrote the game also wrote the TV show. Also, the same guy did the music for both, so very cool they did that. Also, the Marlene actress is the same person who voices Marlene in-game.

I love the two contrasting scenes of Joel's demeanor when holding a dead child in his arms. All it took was 5mins for them to show how cold and empty Joel has become in these 20 years. I really like where this is headed.

He was such a Fun guy...nice. Remember the scientist at the beginning, he explained that the fungi's only purpose is to spread the contagion, eating is secondary, it is just trying to grow.
I have never played the game but I decided to give the series a try because of Pedro Pascal (he's become one of my favorite actors). I was blown away by the episode, and I'm hooked! The writing, the cinematography, and ALL of the actors were phenomenal! Great opening for the episode. I was heartbroken (like a lot of people) by Sarah's death. Being a father myself, the scene was particularly poignant. Nico Parker did a phenomenal job getting people invested in her character in just half of the episode. I know it follows the story of the game, but I really wish that we didn't lose her character. Great reaction!
Yeah now imagine playing the game you start off as Sarah we never expected her death in the start of the story
The Sarah scene was pretty much a 1 to 1 recreation in the show, the way the fall down the hill is the same even. but it felt way sadder. The "TOMMY HELP ME" line broke opened the flood gates for me

When u look back at this episode after u found out it spread through flour, u see how many times Joel & Sarah got lucky they didn't get infected. Joel forgot to buy pancake mix & a birthday cake . Then Joel & Sarah didn't try the neighbors' biscuits, and the later that day, Sarah didn't have the neighbors cookies becuz she didn't like raisin oatmeal

17:42 It's not that they're on steroids, it's that the fungus has taken over the brain so the brain no longer cares about overexcerting the body. The host is probably feeling tremendous amount of pain but the fungus tells the brain to keep going.

Never had played the game so I went in not knowing what to expect. All I knew was that Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey were involved along with the writer of Chernobyl and I knew I had to watch and I loved it. It had me on the edge of me seat, watching the beginning of the outbreak from Sarah’s perspective in the back seat was intense and riveting. Gabriel Luna and Nico Parker were also amazing. Definitely very emotional at times. Can’t wait for episode 2!
I highly recommend watching the opening scenes of the game, just to see how faithful to the game they stayed. It was an amazing accomplishment how they pulled it off.

In the game, during the backseat scene you actually control Sarah's perspective. You hear Tommy and Joel trying not to freak out and you control what windows Sarah is looking out. It really captures the feeling of a kid trying to get what's going on while also trying to tune out her fear while the world is burning out of nowhere. One thing this game did better than any game I've played before it (and probably since) is using gameplay to set a tone. Instead of just telling the story separately from the gameplay. The extended stuff with Sarah in the show sets the exact same tone, all the weird stuff happening on her periphery, slightly out of focus but she is noticing it and trying to process it without letting her fear in. This story isn't just about the story. They want you to feel what the characters are feeling, and they nail it.

When a show can illicit tears like that from someone who has played the game and knows what's coming anyway, you know it's good. I've played both games multiple times, and I knew what was coming with Sarah, and I still cried like a baby.
the whole point of killing his daughter was supposed to show why Joel was so hardened in the future toward any sort of compasion
It also sets up the future relationship with Ellie, becoming her father figure and protecting her the way he failed to protect Sara.

Best Video Game Adaptation Ever Made! It took them 10 years to make this happen. It was originally going to be a film series, but it was cancelled due to budget concerns.
Episode 1 is 10/10 for me. It surpassed my expectations, but Im still carefull and worried about the rest of the season. Because till Sarah's death it was perfect, after her death pace was much slower.
Honestly? yeah it's quite a good one, it's hard to get good adaptations of videogames, but this one is so good.

This series can now be added to the list of great video game adaptations, hope you enjoy the story Jane it definitely has plenty of special moments. They really did a good job of building Sarah up so you actually felt something when she got killed whereas In the game you formed your attachment by playing as Sarah. Fun fact Ashley Johnson and Troy Baker who voiced Ellie and Joel in the game actually play different characters in this series. The infection is not airborne like it was in the game, Neil Druckman changed it to be transmitted through the tendrils in the mouth.

As a tremendous fan of the game, I'M SO relieved about the fact that the TV Show is faithful to the video game. Not gonna lie, the soundtrack during the intro made me cry and so did THE scene with Sarah.
The Last Of Us franchise is genuinely a MASTERPIECE.
The actors, the voices are so similar to the ones in the video game...

There’s a fan theory going around that the fungus spread through flour, so it’s not airborne. The evidence to support this starts with the fact that the radio in the beginning mentions something happening in Jakarta, which is home to the biggest mill factory where flour is produced. Then we see that Joel forgot pancake mix, then Sarah and Joel turn down biscuits from the Adlers, Sarah later turns down the offer of raisin Cookies from them as well, and finally Joel forgets to buy cake at the end of the day.
“What kind of story is this?” The kind that made me cry multiple times when I played it as a video game.

Ps. notice how the watch seems to have taken a bullet therefore giving Joel a permanent reminder of his daughters time of death, a very morbid but awesome little detail which gives even more depth to the "your watch is broken" comment by Ellie

The outbreak was caused by the Cordecypes inside of the flour supply. Hence in the beginning when Joel and Sarah and Tommy didn't have breakfast pancakes or anything. Nana was also seen eating the biscuits in the beginning.

It actually brings a tear to my eye that The Last Of Us has been adapted to live action so perfectly. I have been waiting for an adaptation for nearly 10 years since the game came out and not only does it look amazing but Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey are PERFECTLY a cast as Joel and Ellie.

Bella Ramsey (Ellie) played the character of Lyanna Mormont in GOT. Her character did die during the Battle of Winterfell fighting and killing an undead giant.

I know Justin mentioned the airborne and they already released they wouldn’t be spores in the show just for the logistics of actors wearing gas masks all the time. That was a big part of the game so they wanted people to be prepared for that to be missing.

the spores were taking out according to neil truckman because they are not realistic, it works in the game but not in a show, all the people would be dead in the 20 years that passed, since spores stick to everything, makes no sense using a mask when spores would stick to the clothes, hair and skin, and having actors putting on and taking off mask didn't make things easy either.
@@ailidh-Bcn Also in real life spores can survive almost everything, boiling or even space vacuum it would be quite unrealistic in post apocaliptic world to disinfect them.

Funny you should mention Game of Thrones. The title sequence graphics for this show were created by the same company who did the Game of Thrones opening titles. It's also great that they got Gustavo Santaolalla, the game's composer, to come back and do the music for the show-even reworking some of that iconic music.
Jane is really funny. One minute she's all like "I don't think I can do this. My heart is racing." Ten seconds later she's yelling at the screen "Blow her head off!"
I'm surprised at how many reactors don't seem to understand the significance of the kid the soldiers test at the beginning. The test was red, showing he was infected. The shot wasn't medicine. It was to kill him. The soldier was only trying to comfort him in his final moments. The woman helping to throw bodies on the fire just saw that the body was a kid (she, like most people that age in this scenario, probably lost a child of her own during the past twenty years) and it was just too much for her. That scene also shows how numb Joel has become to everything. Also, Tommy is Joel's brother, not friend.
My view the agent was keeping the child calm. Preventing the fungus from triggering a fight or flight response.
Jane: Is he gonna be ok?. Is she gonna be ok? I can't take sadness and horror and terrifyingness. I'm already scarred.

I always chuckle to myself cuz I've been watching a lot of reviews and there is a lot of people out there that are wondering why they seem to run so fast or he's not closing the doors behind them but if something is quickly chasing you you're definitely not going to run as fast if you're carrying and 80 to 90 lb person lol and since you're already running slower than you normally would you're definitely not going to take the time to close the door when you have to stop and pick up the person again who's injured and can't run

Just FYI, even though the infected look and act like zombies they are just as killable as normal humans (except for advanced infected like clickers and bloaters).
Puts it in to perspective with Ellie being immune, what if they didn’t euthanize people that show up red and instread wait for them to turn. Through the 20 years there may have been other people immune but because they were killed prematurely, pretty much never got the chance to find out. That was until the fireflies saved Ellie
