I COMPLETELY sympathize! Keen interest makes a job 'go.' When your final shelter looks like a tinder bundle, you ask yourself 'WHY??' If cold weather threatened, things would seem different.

Good Nz morning Becky. As far as cooking containers go; I've gone away from cast iron, and turned the clock back 3-4000 years, and use clay/terracotta pots. Work well over coals and on gas cooker too. Easy to clean and I a wee bit lighter. And don't rust.. I get them 2nd hand from op shops. So when using over fire I use duck fat, and then do something like Irish stew. Either white or black pepper, and dried fried onion and the fat, as the base, then add the stew ingredients. Add some water and corn flour, to thicken. Salt to taste. Then you eat it. Tastes better on cold frosty evenings. Take care. Atb from down under.

Here's another comment that probably noone will see... a tip for those with glass pannels in their stove. Never use the product that is advertised as kind of a magical sponge thing that can erase all, sold by a giant guy who is really clean. Never. I thought that might work and it worked in reverse. I lit the stove and within seconds the windows went blacker and blacker. By the time the fire had died enough to get a look at them the tar had built up so much I thought it would never come off. Some kind of chemical reaction with the chemical in the sponge I guess. . I got it off with about 3 applications of oven cleaner. Since then a regular wash with water and every few times spray on oven glass cleaner is all I use, quick and efficient.
