The Origins Of National Flags - Flags Explained

Having a country flag may be an obvious thing, but for a long time it wasn't. There isn't really one point in time, or even one place, where the idea evolved. It evolved over hundreds of years and flags were used in different ways in different places. This is how we (probably) got to have the idea of a national flag.
Did you know flags probably evolved from military standards? And that the colour red was synonymous with protest before it was synonymous with communism? The word for the study of flags, vexillology, has its origins in the vexillum - a Roman standard.

The Soviet Union flag isn’t the reason communist flags are red. The reason most left leaning ideologies have red in them comes from the red in the french flag. I don’t remember what the white and blue symbolised but the red stood for the blood of the people that build the nation. Workers right activist in France used red flags to empathise the importance of the people. The colour then spread across Europe to represent leftist movements. Soviet Union’s adaptation made it even more popular though.

He didn't say that was the reason they were red. He said "Solidified Red Flags Being Associated With Communism". Very different meaning - which not in any way state any reason for why they are red.

Flags are semaphores. Signals. National flags are a signal to others that they are sovereign and unique and not part of some other country.

@@D.Dean1 Not quite. Since 1922, the United Kingdom has been made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales (which collectively make up Great Britain) and Northern Ireland (variously described as a country, province, jurisdiction or region). Only England and Northern Ireland are sovereign. Scotland is not.
