Is Assassin's Creed Origins WORTH IT in 2023? (Review)

  • It’s been a little over five years since the release of Assassin’s Creed Origins. And after recently playing Odyssey and Valhalla, I decided to dive into the game which rebooted the AC franchise and forever altered its formula. In this video, I’ll be taking a closer look at the ancient Egyptian Assassin’s Creed adventure and tell you whether it’s worth playing for yourself. This review will be mostly spoiler free, except for a brief story discussion near the end of the video, which I will prominently label with a spoiler warning before I dive into those details. If you’re concerned about spoilers you can safely skip that part when you get there and go to the conclusion. Keep watching to see it all.

Antiquity makes up the period between civilization emerged and the medieval age, so ~3000 BC (depending on definitions) and the fall of Rome in the 5th century AD. Historians apply this periodization responsibly only to Europe, the Middle East and North Africa though, since China, India and South America have their own wider development. Classic and ancient are synonyms, in the way you're using them.

This game's one of my favorites in the series. Calling Bayek "one dimensional" is like calling Kratos one dimensional. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of the character. Bad take man.

Loved the video but something must be said; AC Origins does not take place in ancient Egypt. That was 4,000 years prior to the plot of origins. It takes place in Ptolemaic Egypt. IMO it makes it even better, as you see the grandeur of mankind 4,000 yrs prior to Bayeks life. It is like seeing the colloseum today for us.

Everything in this game felt perfect. At least on my first playthrough. From the protagonist to the stunning story to the breathtaking world and setting this game is amazing. I loved every second of it. Has to be on the top 5 of Assassin's Creed. I really cannot understand how some people (only a few thankfully) don't like this game. An Assassin's creed game with Regular assassins, a hidden blade, really good stealth and parkour system, stunning graphics and soulsborn combat system. What is there not to love? This game keeps the perfect balance beetwen RPG and all time classic Assassin's Creed. Odyssey kind of surpasses the balance and stands as a more RPG game but rremains superbly fun and a really good game and Valhalla is the game that f*cks it up generally...... Absolutely Recommending this game if you still haven't played it.

I loved Origins but only cause I think it didnt go too far in the RPG elements. Every large game release now a days is an RPG wanabee, the new Assassins Creed Mirage actually feels like a breath of fresh air. I dont need every game to have some impactful dialogue choice, sometimes i just need a LINEAR cool and established story that has the exact cannonical vision the writer had in mind and a nice setting to explore and parkour around with decent enough combat mechanics. I hope ubisoft manages to do some alternating cycles where they have classic AC games and then every couple of years work on a bigger RPG title.

@Matheus Froehlich In Odyssey you actually had stealth abilities, origins has perhaps 2.
Odyssey had side quests with actual NPCs with names, their own storylines, and they expanded on Ancient Greece. In Origins every side quest is going to a camp and picking somebody up to bring them back to the quest giver because they can’t walk or killing animals that an NPC is surrounded by.
I mean let’s be honest here, anybody who thinks Origins is better couldn’t tell you 5 side quests that are memorable and also remember the NPC name (if they have any to begin with)

I literally just killed the head of the Order on NG+ on Nightmare. I will finish this playthrough tomorrow.
On some of your notes about Bayek's actions killing some of his targets, some of the dialogue explains some of his thoughts about these. Killing the Scarab, I'm not sure what a warrior in this world would do after being buried and left to die in the desert. Especially, by this time, he was tasked with these assassinations by Cleopatra. The Scarab had to go. And I agree about the writing in Origins being somewhat touch and go, but I love the story nonetheless. There were some standout parts such as Shadya and hunting the Crocodile.
Also, you should check out The Hidden Ones DLC, there is some follow-up to some stories from the main story.

A few thoughts from someone who has played most AC games (Rogue is the only one, and I am playing it right now).
Stealth elements: You can distract enemies with carious tools since Revelations (third Ezio game, set in Ottoman Istanbul), and whistle from hidden spaces since AC3, so the series has had this for a while.
Parkour: It is indeed lacking in the last three games, not only in Origins. The main reason is that architecture from these times is simply not allowing meaningful parkour elements to exist. It is the very reason why Ubisoft developers didn’t want games in those eras for years, because densely built urban environments are a thing only since the Middle Ages (maybe China is one of the rare exceptions). Fans have been demanding an Ancient Egypt game for years, and when it finally arrived, the parkour issues are hardly surprising.
Combat system: I would argue that the most responsive combat system was first introduced in AC3, and then it was slightly expanded in Black Flag and Rogue. You could do things as using enemies for cover against gunfire, push enemies into obstacles through various ropes, etc. Games that came after that abandoned responsiveness for the sake of utility, and it shows in Origins.
RPG elements and story: I mostly agree on this one, especially on the RPG elements - there isn’t a meaningful decision you make in Origins. In all fairness, Odyssey is not much better, as far as the main story is concerned, as your decisions affect mostly secondary characters. There is only one major plot line that could develop in meaningful different ways, everything else is pretty linear. Aya is indeed the more interesting character, but I kind of like Bayek, too.
Marketing of female protagonists: I somewhat disagree regarding Odyssey, because pre-release, the focus was very much on Alexios. Only after people who have played the game started to argue that Kassandra is the much better-written protagonist, marketing shifted. It is indicative that a year after Odyssey’s release, more than 70% of players had picked Alexios, rather than Kassandra.
Now with Eivør, marketing was indeed focused on the female option, though both CGI trailers feature the male one. In my opinion, the male voice actor, Magnus Brun, does a better job in that one. A fun fact: he also played a viking in “The Last Kingdom” TV series, so I guess he had some practice :)
All in all, Origins is not a bad game, in my opinion. The setting is gorgeous, and I also loved exploring tombs, it is totally an Indiana Jones feel. While writing is shallow, it has some lovable characters, and I sincerely like Bayek and Aya. I will admit, Odyssey does a much better job in storytelling and character writing. However, Odyssey has a huge downside - there is simply too much of everything. It unconditionally wins the award for most bloated game by far. In comparison, Origins doesn’t feel that big, and I would honestly prefer it, due to the sheer time investment Odyssey requires,

Not really sure how u think that the story of origins is worse than that of odyssey and Valhalla, just because you don’t get to have input to the story, the way that odyssey and Valhalla do options gives you a false feeling as to your actual impact on the story an example of this is at the beginning of odyssey is when you choose the horses at the beginning they don’t actually do anything and they’re all called Phobos regardless of which one you decided to choose, those games with false sense of choice bring nothing to the story as kassandra can at one point be caring and the next shell wanna sleep with someone random and will just be in a random angry frenzy in the next which makes her character feel disconnected and ruins the immersion and doesn’t align with her character they try to do 2 thing that skyrim and the Witcher do with dialogue options without taking the positives of both, in origins at least you get to understand the Bayek as a person and his emotions and his struggle to find the killer of his son

just saying the only stealth mechanic added is crouching, they simply replaced social stealth with crouching. ac 3, 4, rogue and so on all had hiding in grass, luring enemies, enemy detection meters.

There is only one response to the title of this video: 1000% YES!!! origins is easily one of the best stories in the series. It has way more heart than the others. It also introduces a better combat system than the jank that people seem to love from the old Ezio games. Origins > Odyssey > Ezio trilogy > AC1> Black Flag > the other garbage.

    • @Hashiriya985
      @Hashiriya985 Před rokem +1

YES bro the older combat system was basically wait for the red triagle to appear on the head of the enemies and then pressing a button.. with that you could fight like 10 people at once, completly breaking the professional assassin thing..

I still love origins n odessy and to this day cant say i love the 1 or the other most(somedays its origins n other days odessy)
But when it comes to size of map it is the smaller of those 2 games i would sugest to a person never played a Ac game before AC origins is probably the best game to start with in the entire series of AC or thats how i feel anyway(and origins was the 1st game of ac series i ever played and oboy was it worth the hours i put into it....the world is just great in this game.....Pyramids+light tower in alexandria do i need to say moore.....

Origins is superior to valhalla. Valhalla is more of a Norse rpg that's only mildly connected to the series. It's good but it's not an AC game. Origins has the feel and structure of AC with new mechanics. It did a great job of merging the old and new.

I’ve played every Assassins Creed game, and I must say, I really enjoy Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla. So many people hate these games because they’re different than the older AC games…but I love it. The games are so much more in depth. The worlds are way more fun to play in, and there is way more to do..which makes me, as a consumer, feel like I’m getting my money’s worth. People need to learn to adapt and change with the times. These games are absolute gold.

Origins , Odyssey then Valhalla Storyline wise & I've played all of them now , I'm just now trying origins for the first time actually this week for the location and environment . Odyssey probably has the best location because of the environment. Nonetheless I prefer Valhalla for the gameplay & time period.

I've played every AC and never got into the whole RPG thing and really hated this game. I found it slow and frustrating and it didn't have much parkour and have up after a few hours. Then Odyssey came out and instantly loved it. The storyline was more fun and the whole game had humour. I have replayed several times. Valhalla was great but for me no real replayability. I've finally gone back to AC origins with the Series X update and do have a new round appreciation for it. It's still not the best though IMO

@@terrylewis_ My favorite would be black flag. I'd say most of odyssey's systems are pretty shallow overall and don't hold up after some time. The dialogue system, territory war system and the mercenary system are the ones i don't like after a while.
I like the rpg mechanics to some extent, but the rpg side fell apart for me when i realized the choices had barely any impact, along with the other ones becoming repetitive, very scripted and immersion breaking more than anything. There are some awesome side quests in the main game and the hades dlc, the only problem is that the bad ones are almost equal in quantity.
