    It was only after taking singing lessons how I realized the West Flemish dialect contains éalien vowelsé. Then came the insight that they are actually very fast diphthongs
    To give an example: the word "bread" is in West Flemish pronounced
    like br - u- ə -t or perhaps br - u -a -t
    but with the two vowels spoken so fast that they hardly distinguishable. ( in front and rolling r)
    The Dutch word "gaan" (gehen or to go ) becomes something like: h-o-ə-n (almost in the throat)
    It interesting that in the English "to go" there is a diphthong too.
    The "g" in English is pronounced hard, like in German or French.
    In West Flemish it becomes a "h" and I find that odd that some say West Flemish is rather archaic while in the old Germanic it was always a hard g, as far as I know.

These videos were made last year around January when we were in Belgium for a month or two and we thought it would be fun to do some casual Easy Dutch videos. Maybe at some point in the future? Please note that in Dutch Dutch you wouldn't address people of the same age with 'u', that's just a Flemish thing. In the Netherlands it would sound very weird to use 'u' in informal situations. Also there are some other words in this video that are just used in Flemish and not in Dutch (for example: ' allez' or 'leute hebben' wouldn't be understood by Dutch people)

    • @xolang
      @xolang Před 3 lety +3

      as Matthias Bouquet already mentioned, "u" is actually the object form of "gij" or "ge".

An American would not have to learn Dutch, unless they really wanted to for the fun of it, because everyone in Flanders and the NL speaks perfect English... but the signs are hard to understand, like Flemish Belgians call the French Belgian city of Mons, "Bergen."
