    Love your content, Sithjia. I wonder if you can tell us about all the undergraduarte math courses, besides a couple of obvious ones like intro to stats, cal 1-3, and linear algebra 1 & 2, you took before Cornell.

    • @sithijamanage
      @sithijamanage  Před rokem +1

      Hi Tiowu! Thanks so much. I took Linear Algebra 1, Diff Eq, An intro to proofs class, Advanced Calculus (like baby real analysis), Real Analysis, and Modern Algebra. In terms of statistics I took Linear Models, Math Stat 1 and Math Stat 2. Hope that helps, email me if you need anything!

      @@sithijamanage I will. You know. I've actually been to Cornell Campus twice and intend to apply for grad school there next year. And I am also a math major who's interested in pursuing a PHD in stat. So, basically everything you've said in this channel is handily helpful and I am glad I found your channel. Thanks a lot, Sithjia.

    Hey Sithija! I’m currently in my second year in undergrad, and I had just switched my major from a double major in Actuarial Science and Math to an honours major in Applied Math, with a heavy focus in Stats/Probability Theory. Then it struck me that you did the same major as me in undergrad, so I was curious to know, what drew you into Stats specifically as opposed to other applied math fields like CS? Thank you! :)

    • @sithijamanage
      @sithijamanage  Před rokem +1

      Hi Nyle! Didn't you comment on a previous video? I remember you from earlier. I think our previous comment exchange was also about your stuff in Actuarial science lol! So if I'm being completely honest, my dad is a stats person, which probably influenced me from a pretty young age. However, if I was to sell someone on Statistics rather than other applied fields, I would say that the job market in Statistics arguably is only rivaled by CS. The work-life balance can be as balanced as you would like, and it's still difficult enough to where you feel like you're doing something worth while. Statistics is also really interesting because you could think about pretty much anything in the real world from the perspective of uncertainty and probability. With that being said, in my personal, very biased opinion, I think that any of the following could be great options that are in that applied math sort of flavor: Statistics, Computer Science, Some areas in Applied Mathematics, Operations Research. Hope that answers your question, thanks for sticking around with the channel Nyle!

      @@sithijamanage Thank you sm for that extremely thorough insight (as always)! Yes, that’s me, I’ve been a subscriber for some time now lol, I did comment on previous videos, always gotta come to the best channel I know for insight! :) I was stuck between Stats and CS for a long time after realizing that I wanted to go to grad school as well (hence why I dropped Act Sci as that’s meant to go strait into the workforce with), but I always felt a closer connection to Stats (after taking Probability Theory 1, researching ML, and being inspired by you). Thank you once again, indeed your answer was very helpful! Best of luck with grad school! :)

    Hello, can you talk about what made you go for a PhD in stats?
    I am doing a MS in stats right now and have the option to apply to PhD programs this cycle. My MS coursework was the casella Berger sequence and linear model theory sequence, and I’ve taken and scored well on the prelims. Because of this, the dept at my university is encouraging me to apply to PhD programs instead of going to industry.
    I have been doing an internship right now as a data scientist with my MS, and I’ve enjoyed it thus far. I’ve done research before, and it was interesting, but I just feel like I want the corporate environment better.
    What do you think about this? Do you think a career in industry for MS statisticians is there? What made you do a PhD in stats?
    Thanks!

      Hello KashKari, thank you for watching this video. These are some interesting points. This is just my personal opinion, so make sure to get as many good opinions as you can on this. I have known from a very young age that I want to become a professor of statistics. Personally, I feel like maybe only people who feel very strongly that they want to become professors should become professors, because you will most likely get significantly lower salary, and maybe the knowledge-requirement for statistical theory is lower for industry. Based on what you have stated here, it might be good for you to stick with what you are enjoying - industry. Our field as statisticians is growing rapidly, and it's a great industry to be in in this era. Thanks! Hope that helps

      @@sithijamanage thanks! Yeah, truthfully, I think the thought of becoming a professor never really crossed my mind. I had liked the idea of mentoring others, but not so much in an academic setting. Glad to hear your perspective on why you are pursuing a PhD.
