Storyline:
Three Americans are headed by ship around the cape to the California gold fields when they are put ashore for several weeks in a sleepy little Mexican village. While there, they are offered the job of following a lady deep into the Indian-infested mountains of Mexico to rescue the lady's husband trapped by a cave-in at their gold mine. For the job they are promised $2000 each. While each contemplates their own chances for getting the lady and/or the gold mine, if they can survive to enjoy it.

My favorite Western film of all time starring Gary Cooper and Richard Widmark!! Even they were both good friends together.
I'd rather Apaches did not get shot that often left and right
Cooper has said some iconic lines in westerns like when the man ask " what does the sign say ," Cooper says , " it's Apache " . The man response, "what else " . Cooper " that's enough ". For us men that grew up watching great westerns like this one , this is a real threat !
I remeber watching this with my family in the 70's on a Saturday night - a ham sandwich with pickled onions and cheese in hand, half the couch in my posetion (my brother had the other half), the sounds of my mum knitting and keeping count with the occassional 'sniff' sound when she chanfed pattern, and the cloud of smoke at maybe 2 and a holf feet as my dad light up his pipe and settled in for the night with a beer and a whiskey by his side.
I always love Cameron Mitchell as one of the baddies/Goody-baddie and if only Gary Cooper had more ... Charisma!
So glad to rewatch this as an adult and catch more of the nuance.

One of the networks had a weekly showing of TV first runs back in the mid-'60s. I think it was NBC later in the night on Saturdays. That's where I first saw this one. I remember how tired I was.

No soft porn tinged scenes, no in your face gore and blood. Pure story, pure class, pure adventure. What happened to the western world?
Greatest saloon scene ever. Gary Cooper and Richard Widmark drinking while a beautiful woman sings. This movie just had so much atmosphere. One of the greatest westerns.
How did they , casting, know to cast Susan Hayward. That is amazing. The audience , the men, had to be convinced that just by the sight of Susan Hayward, that they too would also fall for her.
They were absolutely right ! Love at first sight. Me too.

When movies, and actors, had real class. Gary cooper in High Noon, standing out awaiting his fate, the sheer horror in his eyes. One of my favorite scenes of all time. Pure class.

Richard Widmark in all his movies from young to 90s seem to have a natural COOLness or SWAG about him - e.g the Alamo
yes. before all the spccial camera plates and special effects. real boating, beach, horses, people and of course acting.

Very good dialogue, not a word more, but strike right to the head of the nail and leaving you a lot of things to think about.
Good story well told, performed by excellent actors with lots of location shooting in Cinemascope. Even with the unrealistic Indians, an outstanding adventure film. In case no one else mentioned it, the cantina singer is Rita Moreno.

An absolute classic
Gary Cooper the ultimate Western movie hero. He died unfortunately when the westerns started becoming much more gritty (like this one). If you watch this then you know that John Wayne is nothing but an imposter; he made so many western movies and so many of them is like watching the Little House in the Praire. He must have been so jealous of Coops.

Starting at roughly the 20 minute mark, those old town 'ruins' started to look familiar. Did they use the same location in the movie " The Magnificent Seven",

Not the sort of film I would normally watch as my father is more the old western fan and I old noir which no surprise led me to Richard Widmark which led me here and I rather enjoyed it.

People with questionable morality coming through in aces in the end always makes a great plot line.Widmark especially plays it with a special cool ala Steve McQueen.but he always acted with that calm ease.In my top 20 mainly for the ending.Little known 'Rocky Mountain" w/ Errol Flynn should be seen by all Western fans also for great build up and finale.
He accidently falls into the fire THREE times?!? Slapstick funny!

Cooper was making 'Vera Cruz' still down in Mejico, Hayward was making 'Demetrius and the Gladiators', and both Widmark and Mitchell were making lesser known films as the studios desperately cranked out competition for the new TV.
Lol, whoever wrote this really got burned by some woman.

I watched this movie many times because its interesting, but something I didn't understand where is that lake at the beginning of the film and they landed as they are in Mexico but nothing else says where they are , this movie is incomprehensible !
Lake Oviachic near Ciudad Obregon on the mainland south of Hermosillo. Great bass fishing.

Cooper must be reading cue cards just off camera. Traipsing thru the jungles, Coop is as clean as a shining new car. Silly unreal production values. Mohawk haircuts on Apaches, could never happen outside of New England. He must have cringed a bit watching this opening night.
That was in his contract, he was a quiet manly HERO!
