    Song saved me from myself a few times.
    "So, don't lose your heaven
    Don't convince yourself you're done
    Just 'cause the things around you seem heavy
    Doesn't mean you can't get off this ground"

    Not a huge DMB fan but I don't know why they scrapped this version of Grey Street...so intense, so well played by the entire band.

    This was the version I got on some program like Limewire back in when I was in middle school. Lol, it went on many a burned CD... very happy to find it again. This is definitely the best version of this song.

    Even though he's just mumbling through some of the lyrics, this version of Grey Street is probably my favorite DMB song ever. Something....emotional, I guess, just captures me about this one in particular.

    • @JenX_1973
      @JenX_1973 Před 4 lety +4

      The Lillywhite Sessions were basically just a demo tape. That's why there is all of the mumblng that DMB fans love so much! I remember hearing this demo album for the first time back in 2001. I was on my way to see DMB in Charlotte, NC with a friend of mine. We listened to that CD the whole way to and from the concert!

      For sure, production (and having finished lyrics) is obviously important, but I think Dave and the band were just in a special headspace on these sessions that couldn't really be replicated. Which, to me at least, is why the Busted Stuff album sounds so hollow.

    Interesting... I went back and read all the reasons this album was scrapped, etc. It was 2001 and at a time when illegal downloading was hot, but not altogether taboo. A friend gave me this Lillywhite album, as a I was really into Dave and it was a sorta time in your life when you can't wait for an artist to drop a new album. (Today, I'm kinda bleh about most things new)... But you know that feeling, when you're younger?
    Anyhow, everyone had their reason to scrap the album and forge something different. I heard JTR and Grey Street and was totally floored; it was awesome! I think this Grey Street is pretty cool because it is almost "unfinished", or less refined. The later version sounds a bit forced for words (especially after hearing this earlier version), and I like the violin part at the end to round it out. All the songs though... Apparently, things were just a bit out of sorts for DMB. I later learned this song on guitar, and still sing the Lillywhite version.
    Not that it changed much for me. I went to a lot of Dave shows since then. I guess it's just been a long time between then and now, when the internet consisted of waiting for a download for hours. :) A pointless story, maybe. Maybe just a wine reminiscence. :)

    dave is not "faking it" in this version at all, he actually put more feeling into the LWS version and the versions he played when grey street was first being preformed. and the lyrics are better in this version than most except some early live versions

    I definitely prefer the hook "on Grey Street" to "It breaks her heart." Also, the melody during the ending part is more prominent but doesn't take away from Carter's drums.

      Alex Riesz I have to say that I wasnt a big fan of "Everyday," as well. I guess it was a little too "overproduced" for my taste. DMB has always been about jamming, playing what you feel, improvisational, just playing music. Dave playing an acoustic guitar...not an electric one! Every album up to "Everyday" is just amazing. As for "Busted Stuff," it was ok, I was just a bigger fan of The Lillywhite Sessions, myself. This song here, it is just a demo, full of Dave's "air-filled mumbles," as I always called them, him improvising and just letting go. I love this version of Grey Street, even though it isn't a finished product.
