    I like how you formalize your requirements, do a survey, and then evaluate each candidate against your requirements.
    Naturally, each of us has different requirements and constraints.
    Please do a follow up to tell how well your choice fulfilled your needs.

      Thanks for your great comments! It will be interesting to get everything together and take it's maiden voyage. The next vidoes will be on A/C install, Generator, and then security system....so much more!

    We have used all three of the "No" toileta you mention plus the thetford. Of the "No" The one at the far left just for camping. Dug hole used as a seat only and covered up the waste. Work fine for that application. Middle one, we used the double dooddie bags from the manufacture, but the powder didnt solidify the waste as described. The bags never leak though. Which was a good thing. The one on the right the 'Black Pine sports Colapsible Turbo Toilet" is what we have now. Use a garbage bag liner prior to adding pine pellet cat litter in a similar process as you described. Made a sealable lid. What we like most is when collapsed, it is only 4 inch thick. Stores away nicely. Popped up, its is very sturdy with interior metal framework. Curious why you decided against it. Appreciate you posting these video. Very helpful.

      Thanks for all the good info on usage of the various toilets. I very snug closing lid was very important to me as it will be inside the van with me and don't want any odors - that was my thinking. I don't think I will be using it much but there when I really need it. Thanks for your post and for watching!

    Excellent review! I'm converting a cargo trailer into a camper and have been searching YT for composting toilet reviews and yours is the best by far. I've gone with the Playberg toilet....the big gray one with the toilet paper holder on the side. I'm now researching a urine diverter to keep things neat and tidy...and not smelly. Thanks so much for sharing your adventures. I'm learning a lot.

      I really enjoyed researching the options for this video. I learned a lot. I suppose there is no perfect option because each persons tolerance and situations vary. I liked the Playberg one probably the best, the height (and somewhat the price) made me go with the other option. You are correct, for true composting and smell control the urine must be addressed. Thanks for your input and comments!

    Even that last one is pretty flimsy. Do yourself a favor and just get a PermaSeal lid and standard Home Depot bucket, which together might be $25. The PermaSeal lid is very good quality and has an oring that will seal it very well. The PermaSeal lid is wide and comfortable enough a you don't want to linger anyway. I use peat moss which you can really compact a lot more than chips, and put it in a smaller bucket with a lid that will last quite a long time.

    Some cat owners may be familiar with a variety of natural litters that absorb liquids, pine pellets and ground corn husks are a couple of options.

    I actually like the compact looking black pine toilet, but it doesn't seem to be available anymore. I am looking for an ultra compact toilet for very occasional emergency use... something that folds up small. Your video provided a nice overview of some option, thanks.

    I considered the hassock toilet, but it was too big for my Prius C. Went with the first collapsible gray one to go in my shower tent. I have a stainless steel bedpan for car emergencies that I haven’t actually had to use yet. I like this because you can close the lid, so will probably go with something like this whenever I get a larger hybrid/fuel efficient vehicle.

    More expensive but much better would be the C-Head or Nature’s Head that separate liquids and solids. Not everyone can do one without the other.

      C Heads are cheaper at $600. But you can also find instructions to build your own 12v composting toilet for much cheaper.

    Hey! 👋 just testing a Kamenstein paper towel holder. For you Amz.com 14.99. It is slightly spring loaded so pt stays on until you gently pull the quantity you need. I didnt have many mount options since fg trailer but doors on my “pantry” were solid wood so I used my own shorter wood screws. When that door is open i can easily reach in to grab a pt for outdoor messes. I’m glad it isnt in the way of my one burner butane stove 🔥 and doesn’t yet bonk my noggin! 😫. Take a look and see if it might work in your van.

      The icemaker project was so interesting and I put a ton of work into it. Initial tests were good but the long term tests in the sun in the van were not - it just couldn't keep up. I decided to go a different direction and just posted today a way that is not near as neat but cools very well.

    I’ve had this same hassock toilet for years. Best piece of camping equipment I have. 😍❤️👌I pair it with a inexpensive pop up shower tent for an outdoor bathroom. I usually use a product called “poo powder” mostly because the container is small enough to store in the cassock (along with a small trash can, tp and a camping lantern). Simple is sometimes the best way to go. I enjoy your channel. I’m slowly converting my 2006 Explorer into a camping SUV 🚙 Thanks for the inspiration.

    Good morning and thanks for the toilet summary. It really helped me to choose my setup. Idea: Do you think adding a handle of some sort to the top lid would help to get it open in a smoother transition? Also just watched your carpet vid...Awesome job you did!

    • @timdillen
      @timdillen  Před 5 lety +1

      The toilet video was fun to do and I enjoyed learning about composting toilets and how it’s not mystical or difficult to set up a system. I loved how the carpet came out as well. The next one in an embedded window a/c unit in the floor and storage bin. Turned out really cool.

    I like the toilet you chose, but wonder if you had considered fashioning a urine diversion mechanism for it. Maybe a small jug could fit in to separate liquids & solids?? Thanks for posting!

    Hmmmm ...this toilet is fabulous but much more “man friendly” physiologically speaking. I would snug a urine collection bottle in the front -small milk jug? - then use a collapsible funnel if aim needs some assistance. Urine easier to dispose of. Rinse and repeat. Switch out bottles when needed. That portable sink gizmo was very interesting!

    • @timdillen
      @timdillen  Před 6 lety

      Glad you liked it! Thanks for the tips...I want to try to find some way to work that sink in somewhere!

    • @higbeedoug
      @higbeedoug Před 6 lety +2

      Forget the funnel and use a laundry detergent bottle that has the sleeve that slides out (not Tide-like). Less popular names seem to be these. Dump it at the gym in your gym bag. On the road use a laundry-mat or when you get fuel for the van. Mouthwash tones down the wait-state. Once dumped, splash of bleach keeps things sedate.

    I'm a new subbie and I've been binge watching your Prius videos today until this one popped up on my feed. I have learned a great deal and gotten a lot of good ideas from you. Your content is excellent and your style is detailed but easy to understand; so thanks for sharing your "projects" and experiments with us. I feel much more confident that I can incorporate many of your ideas when I get my own Prius. However, what I was wondering about in this video is the piece you put aside: was that the receptacle for urine? If not, what was its original design purpose? Seems so random to still have to find some other way to keep the two separate, doesn't it? Just curious.

    • @timdillen
      @timdillen  Před 6 lety

      Antoinette Johnson Thank you for your very kind comments! You will love how affordable travel is with a Prius. The piece you speak of is a splash guard with an indented part to hold a roll of toilet paper. It does not fit tightly and with the cedar chips there will be no splash. I don’t like how far down it goes into the bin either. I just won’t use it but do have to now find a place to keep a dry role of toilet paper! Thanks for subscribing!

    even if its not a composting toilet, wouldn't seperating the urine help reduce the smell? ie, pee into a bottle before pooping. Would one have to dispose of the waste everyday or can it accomodate a few day before changing in regards to smell?

    • @timdillen
      @timdillen  Před 6 lety

      Yes, I think it would be a good idea to separate. My plan is to use from late evening to morning and then dispose of daily. It would be a good test to just do solids and monitor the smells for a day or two - I'll try to work that in somewhere.

    Enjoyed your meticulous reviews! Final choice made me smile because I made the exact same thing but in a tiny, mini version, small pot, rubber rim, rope basket.... It stabilizes itself pressed down on car bench.more comfy than my home’s, lol. How do u choose between the van, the ambulance and the Prius? Is there a schoolie too?

    • @timdillen
      @timdillen  Před 5 lety +1

      Hehehhe! Thanks! Glad you found the video interesting. I had to sell the van to fund the ambulance but also have the prius - big/little - nice combo. Definitely don't have room for the schoolie in the driveway - kinda pushing it with the ambulance. They certainly can be had for little money and soooo much room!
