    One of the glories of England and Wales is the paths. An unusual part of our law is Customary Law. If a path has been used since "time immemorial" (in practice since anyone can remember), it becomes a Right of Way, and you cannot be stopped using it. Recently areas (usually high wild areas) have been clarified as having the 'Right to Roam'. Both rights have some obvious qualifications, such as not harming livestock, and not peering into people's houses. Both of these are marked on our official Ordnance Survey maps. You can walk using these rights all over our country; did you see the arrow on the gate telling you this was a public footpath? There is a massive network of these paths all over the country, and some have been joined into long-distance trails.
    Scotland is even better. There is no law of trespass there at all!

    There're 160,000miles of public footpaths in England and Wales, and farmers are expected to maintain any gates stiles or bridges on them, and can be fined for obstructing them. The "grocery store" you stopped at is a motorway service area, in fact it's the newest one on the entire motorway network, it's been open around eight years, and the roofs of both North and South bound have won awards for design and innovation. The buildings are invisible from the air. Btw, your "bunny" is actually a hare, a larger relative of the rabbit, we didn't have rabbits in the U.K. until the Romans brought them in the first century. Every churchyard in England has at least one Yew tree, Yew is what the English long-bow is made from, and we had to have a good supply.

    • @michaelandabbey
      @michaelandabbey  Před měsícem

      Wow, that truly is incredible and actually kind of nice that the farmers maintain them, which is why (I'm sure) the one we stumbled upon was so well kept. The motorway service area was amazing! Loved the layout and it's very interesting that it's invisible from the sky. Lol, I understand the difference between a rabbit and a hare for sure... we just usually say "bunny" because it's more of an inside joke from Abbey and I from the Scooby-Doo movie (just for reference lol). Okay, that's amazing about the Yew trees in all of the churchyards. Truly beautiful. I appreciate all of that amazing and valuable information, truly thanks!

Every country has its own rich tapestry of culture and history, and it's important to appreciate those differences. While comparisons can be interesting, especially for us, as we love movies and pop culture, it's essential to respect the local context. Some bigger Cotswolds towns you’d absolutely love: Cirencester and Bradford on Avon. The latter is in a very steep valley with streets going up the hillsides. The views are to die for, and there’s a TINY Saxon church there. Saxon churches are very rare because they predate the majority of our churches and cathedrals, which were built by the Norman French (after they conquered us in 1066), often by knocking down or extending the original Saxon ones. Therefore, Saxon churches are over a thousand years old.

      That’s a silly thing to say. Every native accent we have in England is “an English accent”. A foreigner saying they’re going to put on an English accent doesn’t imply there’s only one English accent any more than us saying we’re going to put on “an American accent” implies there’s only one American accent. And some Americans (not many, admittedly) can do very good English accents - if Renée Zellweger wasn’t famous, she’d fool any of us. I wish my fellow Brits would resist making such patronising (and frankly pretentious) comments to American vloggers. It’s excruciatingly cringeworthy. You make us all look like a bunch of a**eholes. Fortunately, Americans tend to be very gracious. PS I live just outside the Cotswolds.
