It's also worth noting the technique Austin's drawing. He's shaken up about the situation (anybody would be), but is also forced to pretend as if everything's alright with his family. That's why he's coloring so furiously to mask his own shame and trauma, and thus feebly trying to save his family from said shame and trauma.

I feel like this entire scene is inaccurate. Gil just got SHOT; I don't care that it's in the arm, he should be on the floor from blood loss or at least crying out in pain. And he definitely wouldn't have calmed down this fast in real life; if he wasn't still raging he would be begging for his life. Not this calm middle-ground.

Ginny felt horrible when she saw her mom in this situation, she really didn't knew Gil was like that. She got regret of sending Austin's letters to him and found out the reason why Georgia keept him away from her and Austin. If Georgia just told her, she would not believe her and would act bitchy to her. She had to see with her own eyes who Gil really was, so, she did not treat her worthless after this happened.
