    When only the males of non-social species have weapons it's typically not primarily, if at all for defending a feeding territory. Their issue with food isn't so much finding enough food as it is extracting the nutrients from it. Weather is way more likely to cause actual (local) shortage of accessible food than competition is in their case. When they can't find enough food they move, moving is what migratory means. And, high grade of adaption like tusks for keeping a feeding territory isn't common, especially not in migratory species. And, as a rule of thumb, the more shy and cautious a species is, the less likely it is to keep feeding territories, especially true for non-social species.

    • @frizzlethecat2084
      @frizzlethecat2084 Před rokem

      Let me introduce you to the European Roe deer. It's VERY territorial, non-social (except in Winter where they form loose groups) and cautious and shy. Not migratory, though, as that would defeat the purpose of a territory.
      They are vicious little fighters, with spiky, relatively small, three-pronged antlers (male only). And they do use those antlers to chase away other male deer in their territory.

    • @fishyerik
      @fishyerik Před rokem

      @@frizzlethecat2084 My point is about FEEDING territory, I thought I was extremely clear on that. Roe deer doesn't fight much for feeding territory, males fight each other in breeding season.
      She said the tusks were for controlling productive plots, because doing that is the difference between life and death in the winter. Which doesn't make sense in so many ways.
      Get it now?
