    I put my fingers on automatic playing and went to sleep... Loool !
    But it works, folks !! When I practise repetitive patterns before going to bed, the next day it has kind of engaved in my brain, and it comes much easier and automatic.
    ... Coolest teacher ever !!

    Probably one of the best uke teachers on the planet, certainly on CZcams. Just the right combination of inspiration to make you want to grab your uke and start playing and easy enough to understand so that anyone can learn and make really good progress without putting in hours of hard practice. Just hold your uke and relax, take it easy, chill out and enjoy then it will come almost without you knowing and your little ukulele will take you to places in your mind that that you never imagined. Thanks Stu

    You're the best teacher on the internet, Im getting better at ukulele thanks to you! People are always in a rush and for a beginner it's very difficult to keep the same pace of the teacher during the lessons. One easily gets frustrated. With your method everything seems easier to approach, fun and relaxing. That's what a student needs! One step at a time without too many worries. Thank you sooooo much! Learning this way really becomes a pleasure.

    I had flat picked guitar for about 48 years before I started playing ukulele about ten years ago. It was clear I needed to learn to finger pick. After experimenting with different approaches I settled on the thumb and two fingers as you described. At a workshop, the leader was teaching the thumb and three finger method. I can use that ring finger but I'd rather not. I think of how much music Merle Travis was able to make with his thumb and index finger. I figure the thumb and two fingers should be sufficient for me on ukulele. Thanks for the lesson.

    • @UkuleleZen
      @UkuleleZen  Před 3 lety +1

      Wow Jim - you bring a lot of experience to your playing! I agree with you… There’s so much that can be done with just the thumb and index finger (There are some amazing finger style African guitar with just those two fingers)... three is a lot to work with. I also use the ring finger for a bunch of patterns and I have a video that introduces the concept… It opens up some more possibilities but like you said there’s plenty to work with the three! Thanks for watching and hope to see you in another video 🤙🎶

    The short story: playing guitar over 40yrs - Charcassi, metal, blues, electric and acoustic. Fell in love with my acoustic and playing John Hurt and Noel Young tunes with Travis picking. Built a cigar box Uke with my daughter and haven’t been able to put the instrument down - she is writing music just about every day, and we are enjoying playing together. This video helped clarify those stylistic attributes of Travis picking on the uke - I didn’t really get it before watching.Thank you - also, the mindset ideas you talk about have helped me tremendously, thank you again!

I was proud of myself to learn so much, was going so well in short time (never played before any instrument), but then got to a point where kind of a feel stuck. Could you please help me figure out how to get the timing right while adding the melody notes? I am trying this now on several patterns which I am comfortable with playing for a long time and want to add more flavour to it. I somehow mess up the rhythm of the pattern while trying to add the extra note. Are there any tips or workouts that you can suggest?

    I came to ukulele from bluegrass banjo. I can't say I ever got that good at banjo, but I use a number of the standard banjo rolls when playing uke. I often default to a forward-backward roll (string order 3-2-1-4-1-2-3-1), which sounds good in a lot of places. Breaking away from the standard rolls in my fingerpicking is what I'm still trying to work on. I have a friend who picks uke (and guitar and several other instruments) in the Piedmont blues style, which I find really impressive. I hope to get that good eventually.

This was fun and I learned it pretty quickly--it will allow for something to practice this week. I still think I need to go shorter with the nails so I can get a smoother sound on the frets/chords. Love this picking pattern, appreciate everything u share here!!!! I am a little handicapped when it comes to timing… I drove my music teachers crazy… I can hear, and feel the music instead of getting the mechanics of it… (those who can do both, play by ear and by notes and theory are blessed) I only got the ear part😄 so when I play along with you in this song I got it.. but when I go to my own song I struggle as 1/2 way thro the bar the chord changes and I feel it messes up my finger picking pattern…any tips? Maybe just more practice? Thanks for your time!

    It’s great having a nice picking pattern for beginners to add a little more interest to their music. However, what I notice having a high G rather than a low G is that some of the notes in the pattern are doubled. You don’t get that if you have the low G string apparently. should I consider changing to a low G string on my uke? It seems to make it sound “better”. Thanks for the lesson!

    Appreciate your teaching very much. Really want to move past strumming and have been practicing fingerpicking. I feel like there is a lot of extra noise from the strings when fingerpicking. Like white noise. Is that something to just live with? Or maybe because I’m not picking properly?

    • @UkuleleZen
      @UkuleleZen  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for saying hi Adrienne! I will be offering more lessons on finger style in future videos and also in an upcoming online course that I'm building. The sound you're hearing could be caused by a number of factors but it might be "nail noise"...After you file and shape your nails try this: smooth the edges of your nails with a very fine buffer… Something really soft and gets the nails almost to a polish. I sometimes use 1500 grain sandpaper… But that's just a trick of guitarists who play nylon strings… Buying a bunch of 1500 grain sandpaper is a lot cheaper than a lot of three-way buffers! Once you get the tip of the nail super smooth, you might find that a lot of that noise disappears - It's caused by the rough edges of the nail. In the meantime… Keep on picking!

      Maybe, like Stu say, the finger nails. Some strings are a little bit rough, that can make picking a bit noisy. I also don't like it and use smooth strings.

      Sure Anna - For starters, try applying this to the top for strength of the guitar… You can expand the pattern by having your thumb bounce two different strings… In other words, skipping some strings to create patterns that fit over the larger number of strings on a guitar.
