    Rugby is a brutal sport but the rugby culture is one of gentlemen. Even at school age, they call the ref's 'sir' and have so much respect for the referee. After the game, both teams will change into shirt and ties and share a meal together. It's a great sport

    Rugby has more behind it then just grown men and women smashing each other ever few minutes. Like one of you's said "How do you get past that?" Somewhere along the lines of that, Rugby isn't a one skill sport, you need to have multiple skills and mastery over a various amount of expertise, for example: Kicking, passing, stepping etc. You must posses a lot of stamina as well, full 40 min halves with non-stop plays (unless a penalty or something like that happens, but that doesn't last long) running back in forth, throwing yourself into tackles, or putting yourself against a ball carrier, running miles across the field, thinking about whats coming next while in play, its very stressful. Yet so fun. Getting pass the defensive line, varies in many different ways. You could be big and strong and just power through them all, but that could only get you so far, unless you're Jonah Lomu or some beast like him. You could find holes in the defence, and run through them, or get one of your players into that hole by passing it to him/her. Stepping, requires a lot skill, you got to know when to step, how to step and the amount of power you put into the step to push of you're foot and speed through. Although, sometimes, Rugby players have a good mindset, and can read you're steps. Mixing up the defence is common in both Rugby and League, doing amazingly confusing plays that even gets the crowd confused happens. A lot of work and intellect go into those plays, these can allow holes to open in the defence to again, put yourself or a teammate through. There are so many ways to break the defence line in Rugby and League. The best thing about it, is that it doesn't matter what size you are. Size literally doesn't matter in this sport. You could be the smallest in the whole game and you can hit the biggest players. I mean, ask Fef De Klerk "The Giant Slayer", it requires good technique, skill and timing, but literally, you can hit ANYBODY, not matter the size difference.

    • @fiatstilo3
      @fiatstilo3 Před 3 lety

      Good post. Important to point out that the game is very nuanced. Requires a wide range of skills and technique in the tackle is essential. The reason that there is surprisingly few injuries, is because players are taught technique in the tackle. Tackle rules also very important. Must not tackle above the shoulder, must use arms in the tackle, if you lift a player, you are responsible for bringing him or her down safely. No pads=pain, so need to get right.

    Enjoyed this. It’s great to see you guys take an interest. Rugby players vary in size between around 180 pounds and 280 pounds (with exceptions outside this range). Skill level of players differs by position, but generally it is high. Because of no padding, it means that players need to get the contact area right to avoid injury. There are surprisingly few serious injuries and I’ve played with guys who are in their 50s. Once you stop, very difficult to get back into. Worth pointing out, that generally the spirit between opposition players and fans is very inclusive. Never any lasting animosity and everyone has a beer and a chat after the game. Rugby referees are also highly respected by players and fans. What they say goes, no arguments.

When they made the rule you had to were gloves many more people died. This is a good explanation of which is sport is more dangerous.
    "As a long-time football enthusiast who enjoyed playing the sport in high school, it hurts me to say that I would rather see my kid on a rugby pitch than on the football gridiron.
    Rugby may entail more physical tackles throughout the course of a game owing to the continual flow of the game, but I feel the players also have a lot more respect for their opponents. Rugby players don’t feel invincible since they don’t have hard plastic shielding their heads as football players do, and they won’t use their heads as a weapon.
    In rugby, precise tackling form is much more important since you can’t just drop your shoulder into an opponent or take them out at their knees. And, unlike intended receivers in football, who are vulnerable to massive hits when looking back for a pass, rugby players appear to be aware of possible tacklers at all times".

    Tackle rules: tackle ball holder only, 🚫 above the collar bone, don't tip them vertical (not reckless), stay in contact/maintain the tackle, don't tackle below the knees, no dragging, 🚫 tackling ball holder if they are in the air... yes u can tackle from behind if you are in the on side positon. Also... yes you should give it a go. You will really enjoy it! Islanders are a great bunch of guys to learn and play with.

    Because they don’t wear padding, Rugby players are generally taught to tackle in as safe a way as possible, but that doesn’t mean accidents and idiots don’t happen. I have a friend - big beefy guy - who did two tours in Afghanistan in the British armed forces without a scratch, came back home and one asshole tackled him wrong and now he’s in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Hasn’t kept him down, he was starting Wheelchair Basketball teams last I heard.

    We start playing like this from 5 year old. By the time you are 16 you are proficient enough to play balls to the wall. At 35 you are considered lucky to still play. At 45 it's a miracle. Your knees and shoulders just don't last.
    In my prime I weighed 240lbs and stood 6ft tall. I was considered too small.

    there's usually 15-15 which are 80 min games with 40 min halftime, but theres also sevens which is 7-7 and 14 minute games. its like american football but you can only pass the ball backwards, and the hitting is more like hugging someone cause you hold the player till they fall to ground and then get over top of him if he's still holding the ball.

  • @taoliu3949
    @taoliu3949 Před rokem

    Rugby doesn't allow forward passes, it's all laterals and backward passes. The goal is to bring the ball to the end zone (called a try, equivalent to a touchdown). The option to kick it into the goal also exists. The plays don't stop when a player is tackled, the ball must be let go unless the player can recover and keep running.

    No tackling around the neck, no elbows, no fists. Most tackles are around the chest, waist or legs. It is allowed to push another player away with a flat hand when they try to tackle or block you.
