    That is great - “pull across with the knee” is not something I have been taught in other track days, and I have tended to do the same lift and as the instability is noticeable (I weigh 110kg). For those of us in the Lamb Chops sizing, this is great. Every track day you learn something new.

      Absolutely, it’s something I actually struggle with as I’m almost 130kg and about halfway into the session, my legs are knackered and I always revert to ‘lifting’ out the seat 🤦‍♂️

      @@teapotone Just watching and thinking the hip slide movement is also dependent on the quality and style of fabric - A covering the ass, and B the fabric of the seat - vinyl/rubber of sorts and polyester in the trou... and how easy one slides against the other. If there is too much stiction, because of mass and compression, (I am an engineer) then lifting the heavy lump off the seat and shifting is possibly the only option... just giving you an excuse LOL! Those Esses before the uphill, a bit pf timing and work getting through there... Planning on a Track Day soon myself on the old RT,... Graeme S NZ

      @@teapotone As you clearly need to shed some, you will be pretty limited on what you can shed anyway.
      You are a big guy and you can't shrink, and consider that the beard alone is a baggage you can't remove. :D

      @@teapotone body mass makes a difference. Depending on where I am with my cycling, work and pie-hole control my weight fluctuates from between 90 to 115kg, and fitness aside (and that does influence track days) I find it far easier to scoot about the moto when I am carrying less weight. Trick is the more I ride the moto the less I ride the bicycle and so the more I weigh.getting the balance is the challenge.

    I did that school back in 2003. Three levels in Greece and the forth (advance one to one) at Silverstone. It is the absolute motorbike school. There is nothing close to it.

    Nice one Bruce and full of good content as always. Shows the difference between "Roadcraft system" and track riding which are 2 completely different skills. A mate was a TD Instructor for years and found some Police riders the hardest to teach as they struggled to move away from the system that was ingrained in their riding. Done a couple of track days and on the next one will look at trying the hip flick, hook and pull up 👍

      Aye I find my feet position is the hardest to switch - in the police I was taught to always ride with the instep on the pegs and my feet almost ‘duck’ position out. However on track I just end up drilling my toes into the ground.
      I always used to ride toes on pegs until I did the job course, now it’s ruined me 🤣🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

      (Speaking as a retired bike cop and now track day rider..) One of the biggest hurdles the Cops face learning track riding is learning the front end of the bike. As riders, (and every bike Cop would have done multiple car courses first, where they are taught the same technique) they are very much taught to harness speed before a bend, gather it all up and then and only then enter on a balanced throttle. So as road riders they never develop the sensory skills of off gas and transferring weight to the front end of the bike on corner entry for grip and geometry. Most Cops don't understand the front of the bike!!

      I’ve done a few different ‘schools’ now for track riding, and the CSS is by far the best - hands down. If you want to learn and improve, they are the ones to go with

    Only just got around to watching this! Solid performance, and knee down! Banging!
    Did the Ron Haslam day a year or so ago, which was great but this looks way more involved! Still baffles me how the instructors can manage to still ride faster than I think is possible for me, whilst doing it one handed to tell me I need to move my fat arse out the seat more haha! Nice vid as always!

    If Carlsberg did tutorial/educational videos… Fantastic insight into what to expect on these training days. I may have to watch it again whilst straddling the arm of the settee (bikes in winter storage) and leaning with you. I’ve only done the one track day, more booked this year, and was quite jealous of the more experienced guys getting their knees down. Although trying to myself I found that I lacked knowledge and technique thus lacking in confidence and of course not wanting to drop my bike. Just being able to take onboard the techniques you have given us here in your video and hopefully booking level 1 this year I already feel a slight confidence to enable to get my knee down next track day. Right, now back to watching again, leather suit and helmet on and on that settee arm lol.

    Great vid. Re body position I've always moved my upper body about to keep bike more upright especially on wet days but my bum is always firmly on the start. I might look into do this course.

    Nicely done and some excellent shots. Some seats are easier to slide on than others probably the same with higher vs lower bars. You looked pretty smooth when you were fresh but it is hard work and to difficult to concentrate when you get tired.

    At last it's here👍🏻 Was looking out for this last year. I have level 3 booked for Brands in May and just cannot wait. It's been the best money I've ever spent on 'bikes' ever! Duncan taught me on loads on level 1 and Ty taught me loads on level 2, both these guys are 'salt of the earth' characters, they are so professional at what they do and have their eye focused on you every lap you do. Level 3 will give me the finishing touches to becoming fast, smooth and still be safe out there on track. Some folk like to spend loads on making the bike faster but no learning the fundamentals of riding on track. I don't need more power, just need to be able to use the186bhp my RSV4 dishes out on track mode and be consistent every lap. CSS do what they do so well that folks out there need to get signed up and at least get the first three levels under their belt. Great video Sir👍🏻 by the afternoon you were vastly improved, just drum it into your head to drop that inside shoulder and the rest will follow👍🏻

    Haha - I just did CSS level 1, on my Versys 650...and all the people who brought their sportbikes, and the people who hired the S1000RRs were BLOWING past me on the straightaways. A good fair few weren't pulling away from me once we got into the tighter turns (a good few did, as well), but on those straightaways, there was nothing I could do.

    I see you are wearing a Helite ETurtle. I’m looking at an airbag vest and am interested to hear why you went for that one. Also did you go for the fork sensors?

      I went for the eturtle as I’m in the fortuitous position to be able to ride lots of different bikes, so having the tethered one just wasn’t practical. Plus I like the fact I can just turn on the vest and I don’t need to bother with the tether each time I get on/off a bike.
      I do have the fork sensors but haven’t installed them as yet

    It seemed to me that you were floating your body outside your windshield on the turns. Greatly increasing your drag and possibly blowing you off your turn. That pointing your elbow down in the turn trick kept your body streamlined with the only thing in the wind being that elbow. That should allow you to keep more speed through the turn, IMHO. That is some good subtle training there. Riding to train your body to move like that instinctually looks like fun.

    Great content and sounds like the instruction is at a decent level...be interesting to see if on level four they instruct the most important element of pick up....which makes a massive difference..the timing of the hip shift back to centre or across. You made a comment about unsettling the bike when shifting your hips....esily eradicated and will make you much faster and safer. On approach complete the shift before breaking begins.... move as far back in the seat as possible then shift before popping up...rolling off the throttle and breaking at the exact same moment...there's small margin for error here....where there isnt if you want to be as quick as possible is on exit. You must time the shift of the hips perfectly....the exact moment? Upshift. Pick the bike up ...as they say...get it on to the fat part of the tyre as soon as possible get to max throttle as soon as possible...all the while the harris can still be off the seat ...the head and chest can even start to go back...flat to the tank... but do not move the hips until the upshift. As you upshift under hard acceleration the geometry of the bike changes...it wants to wheelie...if it does... on a modern bike the electronics kick in... cut the throttle and you are done...if you shift the hips and put pressure on the pegs you will unsettle the bike casusing it to want to wheelie..again you are done...If you move the hips with split second timing of the upshift while staying flat on the tank the bike will be ultra stable...it will not be able to wheelie and you can accelerate with 100% throttle much sooner....as you upshift there is a tiny change in geometry and the front will dip giving you like a bump in the backside...use that impetuous and inertia to move. Even really quick guys that dont do this that then learn to will be 2-3 seconds a lap quicker . The harris cam on motogp is a great way to see this in motion. The riders hips will stay out sometimes halfway down a straight....this also allows a seriously advanced riding technique. With the bike at a slight angle the circumference of the tyre is less...the RPM go up quicker = faster on the straight...but thats a whole other conversation !!!...watch motogp riders...ever wondered why they weave coming out of a corner on to a on straight? When I got this right at Sliverstone on Hanger I was 7 tenths quicker and 8 mph faster top speed....one corner...one straight.

      @TeapotOne you're welcome mate....it sounds like a lit ...but in practice it's very simple....no different to what you are doing...we all shift....it just comes down to when...give it a bash you'll be amazed the difference it makes ...even on the GS....in principle when it comes to physics and how they affect geometry...all bikes are the same. I've been riding off and on road since I was 5....family/kidd kept me off track for a few years the I lost my licene to a stroke in 2018. Had to do everything again last year to get it back and am now learning again....suffice to say the track is now a very different place on the new bikes. My old 1098r in my avatar doesn't have any electronics so have to focus on everything to be quick....and safe 😆

    Good effort Bruce. Did you adjust the tyre pressures for the event or did you run on the same pressures as rod use??

      Cheers Scott, just used standard road pressures here - 36 front, 42 rear.
      They started to get too hot right in the last session when I was really pushing it (for me), but otherwise we’re absolutely fine.
      The next day I did Level 4 and lowered the pressures for that, but the bike really didn’t feel good tbh, I’d just stay with road pressures in future I think

      You’d be hard pushed to do that much quicker on a GS to be honest - it’s naturally a slow part of the course but I was very conscious that the GS is a big, heavy lummocks and just didn’t want to push my luck 👍

    Bruce, really enjoyed the video, just one question in the Police force do the motorcycle riders do any of this type of training, because when you see them ride it appears like they are in a sea of calm, but going like stink. Thank you.

      Cheers Stephen, no we don’t do track work, but when you do your motorcycle course you’re riding at maximum speed for the conditions and situations on public roads - you learn to utilise the ‘system’ of roadcraft whilst lifting your vision and planning your moves, which makes your riding smoother and faster.

    Re: Helmet cams - 2 problems. Depending on the strength of the mount, if you come off and slide, the camera/mount can grip the tarmac/dirt, dig in and turn/twist your neck. Secondly, they reckon Michael Schumacher had his catastrophic injury from hitting his head on a rock while skiing and the camera mount stressed and pierced his helmet, compromising the structure and causing the head injury.

    I suppose a big challenge is trying to do sportsbike body position and riding on a GS, it would mess with my head tbh!

    So is this the experience a person would receive as a new learner? Just cruise around getting the tires warm and then get instructions on what to change to improve? Been tossing the idea around about going to a riding school here.

      It’s a race school bud, for people who want to get better at track riding/racing.
      If you want to get better for road riding then I’d recommend RAPID, or even just a BikeSafe course initially 👍

    Mr Whisky M8 here - Well I don’t know how I missed this one . Wasn’t going to comment as I wasn’t too sure what to say - many thoughts so think I’ll just list them numerically - 1. Seeing you do this on a n adventure bike is just - well - brave , different and so inspiring ( got a 1290 adventure ) you make the impossible possible and more or less you were keeping up with many of the sports bikes. 2. Your a bloody good rider and will be even better for this experience. Screw the money u defo did the right thing leaving the old bill - u r living ur best life . 3. I’ve got a pretty good life but it looks like a pile of dog shit next to yours - 4. The places you have been and the people u have met and the things you have done leaves me a bit jealous - but in a good way - and I speak of someone who has biked for 43 years and have riden in 18 countries ( Ireland for 2023) couldn’t be happier for you . BTW U passed my front door when u took that ferry from Gourock to Dunoon . Next time you got to drop in ( Gleddoch) got a mental cv but you have got the gold medal - keep it coming ya big bearded icon - Live your Life indeed we should have a dram sometime got a lot in common - ie Strathclyde Uni and old bill north and south of the border - and yes I’m also the prosthetics guy - How is Martin Y these days 👍”🥃”…

    Love to do one of these days, but having spent £2K on textile airbag riding kit. Do I need leathers to ride on the track? that makes it a very expensive day.

      Yes you do need leathers, most UK tracks require leathers which also zip together for at least 3/4 of the waist, plus back protectors or airbag vests are now mandatory on most circuits now.

      Should be fine, it’s 105db static noise test at the very start of the day and there’s no drive-by noise tests on track.

      Yeah you will do for sure. It's extra expense for sure but my sister came off earlier this year at a high speed and she had no injuries at all (at Silverstone)

      Yep, MUST have leathers for a UK trackday and they must fasten together by a zip for at least 3/4 of the way around your waist.
      You also need a back protector or airbag vest now for most UK tracks

    I can understand you doing track days , I sure it’s very enjoyable but why would you do it on your very expensive GS , if you drop it trying to corner fast on a racetrack it’s very expensive to repair? Would it not be better to get a track bike like a second hand sports bike. To me your GS is a fantastic tourer not really a track bike , but it’s just my opinion of course it’s entirely up to you .😊

      I do a couple of road loops of a few hundred kilometres around where I live, with some nice tight-ish twisties. I often set off 7am of a Saturday to avoid the traffic. Riding briskly through the corners on my s1000r I am rarely caught or overtaken, with one exception. - this guy in his 60s on his 1200 GS seems to catch me and get past me effortlessly. I am not doing anything stupid and nor is he, but it is clear he is a far better rider than me, he is in tune with his bike better than me, and while his GS is not as capable as the S, it is immensely capable in better hands. Always smile when I see him catching me, and the way he gets past me is smooth and confident. I even changed my loop one Saturday to do a run down the Putty Rd, and he was doing the same. It is about the rider not the machine!

    You massively hindered yourself on the GS, you would do better to learn this stuff on a sports bike /clip-on / bent over bike first, perfect it, then see what you can translate to a upright, straight bar bike… dropping your elbow with a upright back and straight bars is almost impossible, same for moving on the seat from one side to another.mI am not say-the GS cannot be fun on track but your body isn’t in the correct position to achieve the learning points…. Do it again on your R1 or a loan S1000RR and you will see what they were teaching isn’t hard 👍

      Fantastic tuition, best road-based training I’ve ever done outside of the old bill.

      @@teapotone Why?.. wow. There are just too many reasons why not on public roads to mention here in a reaction. Please follow an advanced riding course on public roads and you will know, Trackdays are fine, but do not use those skills on public roads, it will get you killed.

      I’ll guarantee I’m trained to a high standard. You can use any of these techniques on public roads, obviously the severity of lean of both bike and rider will not need to be as extreme, but… for eg:
      If you are riding on cold, wet roads, then by keeping the bike upright more but moving your body weight off the bike, you will allow more of the tyre contact patch with the road, this more grip.
      That’s only one.
      Biking is for each rider to ride the way they feel comfortable. I wish people would stop imposing their own comfort zone limits on others - you may not want/like to ride this way, but others do.

      ​@@teapotone So counterleaning gives us improved balance, vision, breaking and stability. Furthermore you can react quicker to hazardous situations on public roads, that are common. Should I go on... I can name a few more if you wish. So leaning in is all fine on closed track, and all trackdays will teach you that. But... it's certainly not the best, fastest or safest way on public roads. Any road training will tell you that. I had all kinds of trainings, from trackdays (I have a racing license) to advanced road and cornering technique on public roads.
