  • A special concert-length LSO Coffee Session, featuring LSO Principal Oboe Olivier Stankiewicz and pianist Alasdair Beatson, in collaboration with the Phillips Collection, Washington, DC.
The concert explores the creative dialogues between music and visual art. In a new music commission honouring The Phillips Collection’s centennial, Stankiewicz is the soloist in composer Benjamin Attahir’s new work for oboe, Al Maghrib, inspired by Joan Miró’s painting The Red Sun, acquired by Duncan Phillips in 1951.
In a specially produced concert experience that could only exist virtually, we move between Stankiewicz filmed in London at LSO St Luke’s and paintings from The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC. The program features music by Luciano Berio, Tonia Ko, Richard Wagner, and Francis Poulenc (with pianist Alasdair Beatson), interspersed with artworks by Anselm Kiefer, Josef Albers, Arthur Davies, Chaim Soutine, Kenneth Noland, Wassily Kandinsky, and Joan Miró.
This concert was originally shown on The Phillips Collection's website in January 2021.

Stunning program. The phrasing in the Poulenc was exquisite. I see why you sit where you do.

The Act 3 prelude from Wagner's Tristan is the saddest and loneliest music and among my favourite melodies of all time. :)

I love Albers and I love Berio, but I love Albers and Berio together best.
