2018 Royal Enfield Himalayan BS4 - Detailed Review & Road Test

  • The Royal Enfield Himalayan has always been an interesting curiosity - an itch that I’ve been wanting to scratch for quite some time. However, with a barrage of complaints about its inferior build, rusty parts and reliability issues, the bike was rapidly slipping into the territory of becoming a laughable meme for misplaced ambition.
    Come 2018 and Royal Enfield finally seems to have felt the rising anguish as they’ve rolled up their sleeves and set about seeking redemption. And redemption here comes in the form of a new & improved package that is complete with a BS4 compliant engine coupled with promises of improved reliability and refinement.
    Only time will tell if the not-so-new Himalayan manages to fulfill its once enormous potential or if this turns out to be yet another hail mary from Royal Enfield that misses the mark by a mountainous mile.
    For the time being though, come join me as a I take the granite black version of the 2018 Himalayan out for a spin and put it through the paces of Bangalore’s roads which these days often resemble the beaten path.

    Super nice to see. Hello from France. I just came back from a tour in southern india. All i found to rent, 4 the few days i spent in gOa where rusty Enfield 350 and Yamaha FZ with no brakes, no supsension, an often no rear mirrors (great fun !!!). And i chose the last.
    So it's my dream to ride an Himalayan in Bangalore or Pudducherry or Mauraï. Nice you caught the idea of a ballad in the streets.!

  • @twistednemo
    @twistednemo Před 6 lety +22

    I have to disagree with your comment about the Himalayan's unsuitability for daily commuting. I ride a Duke 200 (and am thoroughly spoilt by its light weight and overall character) but whenever I have ridden the Himalayan, I have found it to be a good all rounder. That means it is suitable for commuting too because of its neutral handling characteristics. The weight is also carried low down in the frame so the bulk is manageable. The turning radius (at least on the BS3 version) appeared to be shorter than that of my Duke and that helps a lot on packed metropolitan roads. Also, did you check if the rear shock is adjustable for preload? I think it should be. In any case the monoshock is mounted via linkages so the rear suspension does not bottom out easily.

    • @anythingeverything9863
      @anythingeverything9863 Před 6 lety +1

      FodderRev right himalayan is adv tourer so riding posture is comfortable and is suitable for daily commute as well. But engine geta heated up in traffic in city so it makes Himalayan a bit less non daily commuter, but hey make a 350 himalyan and you can get a perfect daily commuter

    • @twistednemo
      @twistednemo Před 6 lety

      Anything & Everything I didn't find the heat to be a problem. That's probably because the first bike I rode was a cast iron Bullet. Those heat up quite a bit. Whenever I rode a Himalayan I would always shift gears at 6000 rpm. Now that heats up the engine quite a bit. Putting the UCE 350 engine in the Himalayan would be a bad idea. That bike needs more power and torque, not less.

    • @twistednemo
      @twistednemo Před 5 lety +1

      @@hammerfall6666 Yes, quite easy for a bike that weighs 191 kg wet. Much easier than any Bullet made by RE today. You don't feel as if it is that heavy.

    The advantage is its simplicity - this is what makes it a great ride for world travel - where relatively unskilled mechanics can work on it. The EU made adventure bikes are full of so many 'bells and whistles' it makes it less likely you will find a repairer in the global back roads.
    You don't want ABS on sand or gravel roads either, so being able to switch it off would be good. Make it better, RE, but not more complicated

  • @KAlpha09
    @KAlpha09 Před 6 lety

    Considering the road situation in namma ooru, they RE should consider making 'Bangalorean' which should tackle our roads while keeping us comfortable at the same time.
