As a double bassist, I get "don't you wish you played the flute?" at least every other gig.
Haha why? At least say violin or cello 🤣
@@CharlesBerthoud Cello Gang!! #multistylecellist :) #WorldofChop And Cello Chop Gang.
@@CharlesBerthoud good thing I play both Violin and Cello with CHOP! 😀 Hey Charles Berthoud, maybe a Chop Slap collab? 👍🏾
I'm particularly entertained by this because my orchestra teacher in high school (who was why I picked double bass) plays double bass and flute specifically
@@CharlesBerthoud Since I tend to do orchestral gigs, I travel with my bass, a music stand, and even a stool. It's not bad, I can get places in one trip.
So I guess maybe a smaller instrument would be easier, but I've tried the flute. I definitely did not have a good time 😅
If you think it's annoying that some people don't know what a bass is, just try viola and try to explain to people how it's between violin and cello.
Haha I can imagine 🤣
Between violin and, what? What's a cello?
@@leftaroundabout I think it's a dragon ball z villain.
@@leftaroundabout A cello is between a viola and a double bass.
I played a viola in grade school. I also played a violin. I couldn't have told you what the difference was. From a playing perspective at that level (and tuning, I guess? - I don't even know if they're usually tuned remarkably differently) they were the same.
You've always looked cool, Charles, but that run at 7 was sublime!!!
Sorry, the 8th
What are you talking about?
@@korigamik go to 8 and you will hear it :D
We almost forget how amazing Charles fingerstyle is
I don't practice santeria
I love when Charles interjects badass bassery with comedy. 🔥😆
And with the "bad parts" you've stuck with it and now, there are 1million + people who appreciate you. I included. Keep on SLAPPADABASS and TAPPADABASS😂🔥.
Luckily there aren't many truly bad parts about playing bass, they're mostly just funny 🤣 slap's a bit painful at first but that's pretty much it
@@CharlesBerthoud speaking of getting a blister on your thumb, how about a dire straights cover?
@@timmiller1 yes sultans of swing
For the algorithm. ✊
sup. It worked 🤘🏻
😎✊
+1
@@josesanabria6414 The algo-gang grows!! 😎✊
For sparta!!!
the composition reminds me of Vulf and Cory Wong in equal parts - 1612 and The Optimist respectively
progression (at least at the start) is very 1612-y and the end of 6 and 9 both feel like they're right out of The Optimist in progression, melody, the background octave riff, to name a few (and i think that's awesome - i love those tunes, and regardless of whether the inclusion is an intentional reference or subliminal recreation it's neat)
you and vulf are both huge reasons as for why i picked up the bass two years ago, and now it's become a pretty substantial part of my life! i've loved what you've been able to show so far and i hope to see even more in future c:
You are in your Virtuoso arc I see...
Phenomenal, as always. Love the videos but I definitely stay for the good bass playing. You are an inspiration my friend
I felt no2 a lot 😭 especially when i’ve finished a gig with my band and someone will say “i liked your guitar playing”… actual pain to be in lol 😂
I actually saw a rarity - a couple of years ago at church, I saw someone go up to the electric guitar players and say, "man, you're a great bass player!"
Brilliant as always! You're never underappreciated here.
Also, you get to have a significant say in what chord the band is actually playing. The guitarist might think you're playing Am, but the bass player can decide it's actually Fmaj7.
Or also Am/E
Your composition is next level. Keep 'em coming.
Wow! I love the melody at the third point. Could be a reference to the acoustic bass on the previous video ❤
Good Video !!! Continue with it Charles.
Awesome playing, killer end!!! 👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🔥❤️
The best thing about bass for me at the moment is clicking your videos and being
amazed every time.
I laughed out loud at #7. My parents bought me my first bass 26 years ago and I'm only going to change the strings when one breaks. You were spot on with all these observations Charles 🤣
That first riff you played sounds very vulfy, love it
Vulvy? ... Like reminiscent of the outer female reproduction organ?
You've got a way with words dude.
@@MartinMaat Haha not sure if you're being sarcastic but he means "like Vulfpeck"
@@CharlesBerthoud OK, that explains it... I was not aware of a band named Vulfpeck and never heard the word before so I looked it up to find it doesn't exist. I then figured it had to be either a typo or a creative expression and I gave him the benefit of the doubt.
Sounds similar to "1612". It's even in the same key.
@@MartinMaat LMAOOOOO
another super cool video!
I always love watching ur videos 🎉
I’m getting myself a Glarry this month or next month, so I’m keeping myself hyped lol
Everything you do is so beautifully melodic. That is a gift.
I appreciate you with every musician atom in my body charles! thanks for everything!
Great as always 💪
Always great stuff
Hahahahaha #10 is so hilarious. You rock man, keep up the good work ! Fellow bassist here.
He put LOVE in da music mon, he put more LOVE in everything I and I do! Listen to the man SLAP da BYEEE-ASS!!!
I like to listen to these posts at 3 or 4 in the morning, that's my "Special" time.....the time when it's just Me and my BASS GUITAR!
LOVE YA MR. BERTHOUD!
Hope all is well in your very BASSY home during this Festivus time of year! HAPPY FESTIVUS TO ALL THE VERY BASS OF US!!!
Sounding great, dude!
Spot on, Sir Charles.
Nr 8 is very true. I have spontaneously combusted many times when watching your videos. 10/10 would watch again!
So good! Saving this to listen to later
This here's got me feeling right. Everything is right with the world when a bass is playing in my ears
Charles you have chops for centuries my friend…. Thank you for sharing may the bass be always with you….
Amazing 🔥
You are so insanely good, it is ridiculous!
Amazing 🙌
Hey man, very cool vid again, you keep me motivating to practice bass even more. Is there maybe a way, that you make a vid explaining how you practice and play better as an intermediate/beginner? Much appreciated
daaaang great video Charles I totally agree with everything
I saw Rush in 2010 and also 2011 and they had a short film with Paul rudd and jason segal where at the end Geddy says to Paul "you keep slappin' dat bayyss"
Which i think makes it cool again and should automatically relax you
WOW! Crazy stuff. My bass is just playing the song. Never got into slapping good but I will get there. Relearning is tough due to so many things going on.
The tap solo for #6 sounds like the poly bridge 2 soundtrack on bass and I'm here for it.
i never tought that i would think of buying a Bass until i subscribed to charles and davie , kudos charles
Cool video bro ❤
Hey Charles! Honestly I'm in love with your tapping style and overall sound. As someone who's recently finished up a bass course (Beginner 2 Badass with Josh Fossgreen) I find it best to learn through his sort of curriculum/teaching style; outside of that much of my learning comes from playing along with track-driven tabs until I get the rhythms and notes right. Other times I'll cover one of the beats I made or pretend I'm a rhythm guitarist with my multi-effects processor pedal thing. Drum loops are also really fun for me as well, and I have played at church as the "synth bass" twice.
Still, I think I could benefit from that curriculum thing like Josh's course, and it's not like there's an intermediate 2 badass one yet. If not a course, perhaps there's a guide of some sort on learning more advanced techniques (I vaguely remember you showing one in one of your videos but I forget). Anything you can recommend (in particular for someone who's only bass time is during weekends :/ ) would be stupendous! No rush, just thought I'd ask 😅 I think having a course gives me those crucial goals, the "what are you going to work on today, how will you work on it, etc" type of goals and without such a fixated system I'm afraid of having very little to no progress. Anyways, that's all I had to say. Stay amazing! :)
Sense of humor is beyond and above!
No idea why I'm here. But you're really good. Watched the whole video and gave you a like, my man. Good luck out there.
I can say with 💯 percent certainty, bass brings our house together.
Excellent, thank you...
Literally lol'ed, thanks dude. Your amazing
Quality as always
LMAO, SLAPPADABASS!!! 😂😂😂😂 that genuinely made me laugh. Love seeing your stuff man! Insane how talented and just musical you are. Hoping to get on your level one day!
Epic!
Enjoyed you
R playing as alwaYs. Loved the humor!
😃🙏🏼you’re my hero in music!
Blowing!!! 🔥🔥🔥
Love your humor
Always a great video this is my favorite because it’s true 😂
I love you, man. Great movie.
Toca muito muito Meu Amigo top top👏👏👏👏Melhor Baixista que conheci até agora, não achei Baixista melhor👏👏👏👏Sou seu Fã meu Irmão
Enjoyed your videos for last several years and generally don't read the comments..that being said, I'm old and grew up listening to "Return to forever" "Weather report" and "Zeppelin". Then 1980ish my younger brother turned me on to "Japan" (the band, I had already spent a year in the country) Mick Karns playing was unlike anything I'd ever heard...in a good way. I remember you playing a fretless and surely have been asked about the Mick Karn bass lines from Japan... if you want to address it that'd be cool, if not keep up the great work as I've brought a lot of people over to bass because of your channel. Thanks
Ah man, k love watching you jam out man, when you jam out with your bass. Slappa dat bass man
I remember when I was first starting out on the bass, keep practicing 👍🏻
I enjoy watching you slapadabass on the CZcams!
I like it!
Hello greetings from Costa Rica, I'm a fan
This is incredible
Превосходная игра на басу, только благодаря тебе понял что хочу играть на басу! 👍🤘
1:05 Yup, still haven't changed the strings on my bass in probably a couple of years; still sounds great, though.
SOUNDS GOOD BRO
Number 7 is definitely me. Not changed my strings since I bought my last bass 12 years ago
Do you feel like there are new things that you have never discovered about the instrument or do you feel like that you have fully mastered it? It'd be hard to imagine what else is left to know. Truly brilliant.
Clearly you don't play an instrument seriously 😂
@@josephroberts2555 cringe dude
What the first reply is trying to say, put more nicely:
Musicians always feel like there’s room for improvement, always something new to find. No master musician believes that they have reached the apex of playing their instrument.
But this question was a good one; I also wanna know charles’ answer.
There's always more to learn, I think the possibilities are pretty much infinite!
@@CharlesBerthoud when I first saw the famous Stu Hamm solo some 10 years ago I thought “there’s nothing that can possibly top this”. I get that same feeling watching every single one of your new videos. It’s interesting how you’re at the pinnacle of skill with playing and it allows you to explore so many creative avenues.
I love any video with explosions 😂
Groovy af!!!!
man i am a bass player and it is so much fun watching you play even knowing i can't do it
You forgot the blisters, Charles. They’re the most painful out of all of them.
True, they're a rite of passage 😬
@@CharlesBerthoud Blisters are for kids. Lmao.
Your face during the slapadabass part was priceless 😂
Love it.....Flawless techniques.
BOOM 💥
Thank you very much.
Hopefully you and the family are preparing for GREAT Christmas 🎄
That ending is amazing 😂😂
You are by far my favorite bassist on the planet right now!
You must know some funky alien bassists then, by implication, and you're holding out on the rest of us! It is possible that Charles is from outer space. That would explain a lot.
Maestro!!
Huge Rush fan here, so I LIKE "slappin' da bass". :)
The best thing about playing bass is that feeling when you go all out with a crazy fill and bring it back to that route note with perfect timing. The worse thing is that most people that show any interest in you being a guitarist lose interest the moment you tell them you specialize in bass.
Insane playiing!
@CharlesBerthoud if you don't have it already, please make a video about your recording gear
That was EPIC!!!!!!!!!
Slappah da bass! I saw Geddy Lee back in 2010 on their Time Machine concert tour say that in their concert comedy video!
WOW. SUPER.
was having a shitty day but you made me laught. thx man :)
another breathtaking composition. and that fingerstyle on #7 was out of control
sometimes i wished i played guitar, but charles shows me how cool bass can be
Charles, I just wanted to tell you, I love you man.
I loved #8 and even though I've learned a little bit of playing bass I still say "slappa da bass."
Charles stupendooooooo.
Love the #9
Thanks Charles. 🎯 You really did 'too funky' 😂 💚💚💚💚
After watching this 5 times consecutively, I can confirm that it is a work of musico-comedic genius! 😂 Bravo Signor Charles 👏👏👏
The baseline at the beginning and #9 reminds me of "Monster Truck" by Tom Cardy.
Крутой рисунок!!! Браво!!! Молодец!!!
The best explication for the world!
Best things about a 6-string bass: so many more notes, so much more possibilities, can be tuned to a guitar in B-standard =D
Worst thing about 6-strings bass: absolutely massive, so it’s very heavy, the neck is huge, not as easy to play as 4 string bass, and Ibanez BTB input jacks suck so bad.
