      @Playford Seven - Actually The Port and It’s shallow water approaches are actually unfamiliar territory for A Captain ..Just as the same way You would be unfamiliar in a unknown chaotic country in a Car..The Captain doesn’t have knowledge of The local Currents,shallows and most importantly the manoeuvre for Docking is Performed by the Port Tugs who liaise under the Pilot’s Command to Turn around and Dock-undock in a tight space.
      Pilot is the Local Hero.Captain is the Man with Overall Responsibility.They work together and cannot get the job done without each other.

    So, how aware are the pilots of the danger of what they do when they board ships like this? I know all of them know that it would be dangerous to fall of, but how dangerous do they think it is? Do they think it's more a danger of potentially being crushed between the ships (which could be survivable), or do they think it's more certain death, for example that they would be forced into the propellers from the enormous suction downwards along the hull into the screws? Would appreciate a reply :)

    • @kielerforde8495
      @kielerforde8495 Před 3 lety +2

      @Michael: in that particular moment you are very focused to do the right step in the right moment. Those dangers you mention are somewhere in the back of your head, but in that moment you couldn´t think too much about ist, because the right actions have to be done within seconds!
      And what is of the same importance is to start climbing immediately after stepping onto the ladder, because the pilot boat shouldn´t jam your feets or legs between boat and ship, when the boat comes up with the next wave!
      I´m a sea pilot at the Kiel-Fjord and at the east part of the Kiel-Kanal in Germany.

    • @michaelcaplin8969
      @michaelcaplin8969 Před 3 lety +2

      @@kielerforde8495 Very interesting! But do you think there is a genuine danger of being sucked into the screws of large ships if you fall off the ladder and end up in the ocean? I know that one person who jumped off the Stena Britannica was sucked entirely down through one of the propellers, but I'm guessing since he jumped over board that he ended up a meter or two under the water surface because of the tall jump. Any danger of that happening if you are floating near the surface?

    • @kielerforde8495
      @kielerforde8495 Před 3 lety +3

      @@michaelcaplin8969 Yes, that might happen! But as this would be a very dynamic situation and depending on many factors (position of the pilot-ladder at the hull of the ship to be boarded, weather, aquadynamic situation around the hull, etc.) it is hard to say, what ist the most possible danger to happen.
      The last fatal incident we experienced in Germany happened at Brunsbüttel-roads at the river Elbe ... that pilot was saved (I don´t know, if by helicopther or by the pilot-boat), but later died of hypothermia in the hospital ... a too long time in the cold water!
