  • Season 2, episode 28 is here. Dominic, Connor, Erica, and Mark have an awesome conversation with 7 time Emmy Award winning visual effects (and knife fighting) master DAN CURRY. Dan is so great, he brought a specific Klingon’s Bat’leth… and other weapons… and an amazing perspective on life and work and the pursuit of wisdom… and the lethality of paper.
We discuss Dan's upbringing, immersing oneself in another culture, the benefits of learning and thinking in other languages, inventing the Bat'leth, inventing Worf's other weapons, making waterfalls for $200, the importance of inner strength, the fact that nobody can take your integrity nor your knowledge, and much more. Erica gets some fan questions in, we play a round of Star Trek Trivia, and we subject Dan to being "Stuck on a Deserted Island with Connor Trinneer.” If you like brilliant people, this is a fun one. So grab your mimosa and get ready for some laughs.

Mr. Curry is a true polymath! A movie should be made of his life (with names and dates changed, for the sake of privacy). Erica, Connor, Dominick, and Mark, the show just gets better and better. You guys choose really great guests!
Regarding merch: I want a Mark, Mark, Mark!!! T-Shirt in the TOS font as well as a shirt or a cap with the three colored 45 degree angled stripes with the elongated star shaped shuttlepod (like the watermark on the lower right corner while watching the show).
Please keep up the great work. I wish you health, wealth, and true contentment in your endeavors.

Connor, Dom, Erica and Mark - congrats on another wonderful episode! This episode was quite a treat, I must say! I love when you manage to wrangle in guests that are/were part of the behind the scenes magic of Trek. It truly is so special. Mr. Curry seems to have had a very exciting life thus far, wow! You could really get the sense of how much those experiences shaped his creative process and vice versa. The fact he could come up with a functioning work around for an effect in such little time is truly extraordinary. He radiates a very calm and kind persona and the wisdom he dispenses in this episode should not be understated. I really enjoyed hearing about his perspective on art and the current state of things, how technology is no substitute for real human effort and soul. The fans provided some really stellar questions for this episode as well! All in all, a really interesting and engrossing episode! I can't wait to see what next week has in store. Happy Shuttlepod Sunday everyone! 😊🖖💗🍃 P.S. - Not to tell you guys how to run the show (you're doing fantastic as always), but you could work in the top three favourite movies question going forward at all? I'd love to hear what answers guests provide for that one!

Your guests are top notch. Every aspect of what this show does is top notch. Everyone behind the camera is super. And the hosts cannot be over stated as being just as interesting as the guests. Cannot get enough of this. WAY better than any tv show host/guest star interaction in the last .. ever. Because those tv shows have a smattering of commercials that interrupt and reduce the time the guests have to share. 45 minutes to unlimited time here with guests is awesome! And a special shout out from 1 Washingtonian to another. Do you realize you and Adam West come from the same place? (trivia for you in case you were not aware)

OMG! He taught art at Cape Cod Community College (AKA: 4Cs)! I went to school there in the 1990s long after he was there, but the school was a great experience. Lots of professors who worked there part time and taught in the subject that was their day job. For example: my child psychology teacher was a practicing child psychologist. It was really great to get the benefit of their real life experiences.

I am a long time Star Trek fan, since 1966. In the mid 1990s to the early 2000s I was studying American Kenpo Karate. I participated in many martial arts tournaments. I wanted to combine these two hobbies. I found a source to buy a demonstration Bat’leth. A friend gave me an (unauthorized) book containing a form for the Bat’leth. I adapted the form and performed it at a couple of tournaments. The first time was awful. But the second year I had it down and took home the second of only two 1st place trophies I ever won. The Bat’leth attracted quite a bit of attention. I was know as the guy with the crazy sword. Or maybe the crazy guy with the sword.

Dan Curry is a great creative! But there is some confusion about Dan’s timeline. Graduating from Middleburry in 1968 (age 22 not 19 like one might understand from this interview), then to the Peace Corps/Asia creative time(early 70’s). Return to the US, Small College teaching job and medical illustration job, then admission to Humboldt State(mid 70’s). Introduction to ILM and others at Humboldt before graduating. By late 70’s he is beginning his adventures in film and TV (age early 30’s)
It seems that everyone interviewing him was surprised when he said how old he was when answered the questions about how old he was when he started the teaching job in New York. Perhaps he misheard the questions.

But formal academic subjects such as drawing & graphic/technical on the one hand design & Origarmi (Adam savage says whether it's metal, wood, plastic, paper, foam core, or flesh that it's all the same skills in how to fold) & on the other hand combine that with both pure & applied maths which computing is application of. And then on third hand learn to Act & Improv. Much of animation is performed first by the animators to understand what needs to be captured for example the army men in toy story was an animator with a pair of old sneakers nailed to a board
