I just found your videos and they're so helpful! Just from an outsiders perspective the only thing I might recommend is annotating/underscoring your speech with graphics up on the screen! As you make certain points it'd look very professional to see them illustrated with some sort of text or image... regardless keep it up you're doing great!

I've been writing for almost a year now and I still feel the need to edit my bio on Medium and every time I do, I get those thoughts "Oh I don't want to come off as inconsistent, I just wanna improve". For those people who don't have stripe available in their country. There is but one way you could get paid, you create a payonner account and a stripe account. You link stripe to payonneer, then you transfer money from Stripe -> Payonner -> your local bank account. Yes, you are going to lose a lot of money through transfer fees, but it's the only way.

making them. Here is the thing: I always considered
myself a hobby-writer. But a friend of mine encouraged me
to get on a platform to share my stories. I signed up for Medium
earlier this week. This morning a publication reached out to me,
asking if I'd like to submit one of my stories. I know I am still
writing for me, but this completely made my morning. I do worry though.
I am a naturally shy and insecure person. How do I make sure I do not measure
the value of my stories by the opinions of others?
Hey! First of all, congrats on being invited to contribute by a publication!
It's tough to be honest. Especially because Medium financially rewards you on "good" stories, it's very hard to avoid beating yourself up about how much or how little your stories earn.
The way I avoid this is I don't look at my notifications or earnings, and I try to avoid looking at my stats and instead try to focus on how I feel during writing. I love writing! It brings me a lot of peace and happiness to actually type my stories onto my computer. The more I focus on that, the easier it is for me to continue writing for ME.
I know this isn't a perfect answer and unfortunately it's the best I can do. I also struggle with exactly the same problem, and I continue to do so though I've been writing on Medium for nearly two years. The best I can offer is that I believe most writers feel like this, so at the very least, you're in good company!

So kind of you to share all this. Really. I have 4 questions, apologies if you’ve addressed these elsewhere. 1. Could you share your take as to why Medium, why not somewhere else, in fact what is the blogging landscape like. Am sure there are a 1000 reasons for choosing Medium, just wondering what the big ones are. 2. If I am blogging on my own site or elsewhere, am I allowed to also share it to Medium as well. Basically, is Medium exclusive. 3. Do you share your Medium posts a lot in other places to help drive traffic into your posts. 4. Are all cats grumpy or is it just the ones with odd numbers for birthdays. Thanks again!
1. Two big reasons. One, Medium's recommendation algo means you aren't punished for not sticking to a single topic in writing, which I find a much more natural way to write than being an expert in a single thing, like most bloggers are. I write about cats on day one, my cat-lovers see it. I write about psychology on day two, my psychology readers read it. Secondly, you don't have to worry about formatting. The Medium editor is very jazzy and you don't have to stress about content blocks, pages/posts etc - all you have to do is write :)
2. You CAN double-post. Medium has a import tool which canonizes the original link, so Google doesn't punish you for duplicate content. Most folks will write stuff on their own blogs, then import onto Medium. However, you can do it the other way round too. Anything you post on Medium belongs to you to do with what you want.
3. It does, but not much. E.g. I'd say I can guarantee that 5-10% of my email subscribers will click on a link if I send it to them to read. Maybe a few clicks from LI. And so on.

Happy to help! Short version: you can easily see the top 100 pubs, and search for other pubs, and request to be added as a writer with a click of the button.
Long version: Basically, being added as a contributor to publications used to be a massive pain in the a**. Every pub had a different submission method and you always had to dig to find it. This guy, Lincoln Daniel, (www.lincolnwdaniel.com/) developed a single, consistent method to access tons of pubs all in one place.
He lists the top 100 in number of followers, says whether they're accepting contributors, and makes it dead easy to request to be added to the ones that are open.

You retain all rights to your Medium articles, so you can totally republish them in other places!

Thanks, Zulie! I've been binging your videos hoping to start on Medium soon. I was wondering about citing sources on Medium. I know you've stressed the need to back up any claims you make in stories, but what if I write a piece that includes, for example, some biographical information about a historical figure? I'm used to having to cite all info that isn't mine of course, but is it necessary on Medium if it's more summarizing the history of something rather than presenting ideas with the aim of convincing readers? If so, is it enough just to link to the article I read the information? Thank you again for your great videos, and keep up the amazing work on Medium, CZcams, etc!

Yes, you can republish, and it can earn some money. But most sites prefer original work and a lot of content only works for a specific site.

You're always very informative and gave me a lot of confidence, it's also nice to see a familiar, friendly, positive face :) one thing I'm having trouble with is if I include screenshots for movies to explain film theory in a medium post. I understand there's fair use for educational use, but what if I'm earning in Medium from the post??? It feels like a real gray area.
Hm I'd argue you're OK - I think the main thing with copyright law is that it doesn't lessen the value of the product, i.e. you're not making money from people being like "I want to watch this movie but don't want to pay for it," or putting the screenshot on a mug or anything.
That being said, I definitely am NOT a copyright lawyer lol so I'm not 100% sure! This is just my best guess.
Hey Zulie, love your channel. There's something I'm trying to understand about Medium: do they post absolutely anything that anybody writes, assuming that it doesn't violate their terms? I haven't heard of "rejection" in Medium. But if so, how do they maintain a reasonable quality for their paying readers? How come Medium isn't overflowing with droves of low-quality content that makes finding the good stuff nearly impossible? (Or maybe it is...?)
Great question! Medium's answer to this is basically the "curation" mechanism. If you write garbage stuff and post it, Medium curators won't curate it. Only your followers will see it, and likely not many of them. If you write something stupendous, Medium will curate it into one or more topics. From there, even if nobody follows you, your story will still be shown to people who have demonstrated they read in that topic.
Hence, even when I had 0-500 followers, I was able to make more money than some folks do with 1000s of followers - curation.

I think it's totally fine for writers to share pictures of themself, especially on lifestyle, personal development, motivational/goals, etc type of articles. Images that have people in general help a reader connect to the content and one of yourself will help YOUR readers connect with YOU 😊

Hi Linda! Empressa is totally right. Many Medium writers post pictures of themselves (or of their cats, like I do :) ) If it helps build authority, like in your story you mentioned, it's 100% a good idea. Some authors like Nicolas Cole do this for every single post (nicolascole77.medium.com/)

Hi Zulie! Great video, thank you for these tips. I became a Medium member today and decided to check if my followers will grow. What was your experience with and without Medium membership? I suppose due to clapping, reading, and comments my follower's amount should increase faster, right?
I find that if you're a paying Medium member and spend 10-15 minutes per day engaging with other writers, reading, clapping and especially commenting, my follower count did grow :) It's up to you if that $5/month is worth it!

You said one should create his/her own publication. As long as I know you can only publish a certain article in one publication only, so publishing into your own pub would not allow you to publish on the other popular ones, right?

Hi Victro! Yep that's exactly right. I'd recommend putting 25% of your new stories in your own pub as you're starting out. Then as you grow, your audience grows, you can put more like 50% in your own pub. This balances the tightrope of getting access to bigger audiences while still growing your own.

I would like to use certain news subjects that appeared on CNN, BBC etc. and it would make a better sense to just have those screens during the article. Hi Zulie, I started writing on medium a month ago and things were really slow so I just started doing more research. Wanted to ask if you think it's too late for me or I'm less likely to be successful because I didn't do it as I should have in the first month?
My experience is that it is never too late. You never know when your boost will come, or even if you never have a boost but simply a slow and steady growth.

When starting out, how frequently should someone upload good-quality articles to maximize traction?
Great question - I recommend one SUPER high quality post per week if you can manage it. It may not sound like a lot, but if you're still writing in a year, you'll have 52 solid posts. Those will be the ones most likely to continue earning you money.
That being said, even if it's just one per month, that's still a good strategy!

I’ve been thinking about writing on Medium. However, I’m unsure what to do with Stripe, I can see it’s quite business-centric. Their’s a sole proprietor option available, which I picked. Then it went on about what industry you’re in, your product/service etc.
What if I don’t have a product/service? How would you go about that?

Do you have to credit the profile image as well? Credit all images, not just the ones you download from other websites?
Yep! That's just how Medium knows you didn't steal it. Profile pictures are OK, btu any image on any story needs to be credited even if it's just "Credit: photo taken by author"

Hello! Umm I write on Wattpad, and am thinking of writing a bit on Medium because I’ve been wanting to save up a little bit of money. Do people who write on Wattpad transition well over to Medium? And what type of writing to they look for? Fiction? Do people write fan fiction too?
These are all great questions and unfortunately I do not have many answers. I am in the middle of creating a video to answer this to the best of my knowledge - I've made a note of this comment and I'll post the link when it's uploaded.
Short answer for now: Medium CAN be a good place for fiction. There are publications I'd recommend trying to get into (PS I Love You and The Junction) as they have a lot of fiction followers. It is more for standalone/short stories versus chapter by chapter.
Most writing on medium is nonfiction, but some fiction does exist! You can see what's popular/successful on the fiction side of things here: medium.com/topic/fiction

If initially, I don't become a member of medium as I am in Pakistan (where stripe is not available yet), so can I start writing and publishing my articles on medium just to create a portfolio to show my freelance writing clients? And also if I don't have aim to earn money on medium at start and I am not becoming a member, can I still make followers on medium? I will really appreciate if you can answer my questions!
Hi Fasiha! Great questions. There is absolutely nothing stopping you. You can totally sign up, start writing, build a portfolio and start getting followers now. you won't be paid by Medium directly YET, but a) there are other ways to earn money, like driving people to your own blog, using affiliate links and so on and b) eventually, I hope, Medium/Stripe will monetize for additional countries. If that's the case, you'll be established when that happens.

Zulie I have a question. Hopefully you'll answer. So is it okay for writers to pick GIFs from the internet and post in the article? With due credits to the source of course.

This is a very helpful video Zulie! I was just wondering if you needed to write an article before you make a publication or not? When I hit the publications tab it does not give me an option to create my own, and I've looked up tutorials on how to do it, so I know where the tab is supposed to be located. So if you or anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it!
Hm weird! I definitely know of at least one pub where the editor has not written any stories yet (medium.com/clothes-thought, the editor is Tiffany Lam at medium.com/@ltiffanyam) so it's possible, but I'm afraid I don't know how :/ Sorry I can't help more!
