Appropriately, the opening piece of the concert is a musical portrait of the Andalusian capital by Albeniz, who came from northern Spain but whose soul seemed to be in the folk music of the south. The setting for this piece is the Patio de la Muñecas (or Doll's Court - named for its small proportions), an exquisitely tiled patio with galleries above its delicate marble columns. This was the centre of the private domestic life of the court in King Pedro's palace, completed in 1366 in the Islamic style, echoing five hundred years of former Arab domination of the city.

John is one of the last few surviving "first generations" of Andrea Segovia students. Which makes him so great, and a big part of modern guitar history. He has the most monumental guitar repertoire of all guitarists today. And, he knew the maestro personally. John is one of the greatest, and most accomplished guitarist to this day. I myself, am very honored to be a 2nd generation of the Maestro, Segovia. But I can only wish to someday be that good.

Primum...to play like John Williams, you need to have an ear for music, and start playing at the age of 7 and at least an hour every day...
I started playing guitar at the age of 25 and I think it’s already a bit old...

@@skozlovski I've been playing guitar since I was 16 years old. 32 years ago I started the guitar. Though I played mostly electric guitar in rock bands for most of that time, I have been studying Classical Guitar now for the last 15 years or so. But yes, to get to the level of John Williams mastery of guitar takes many, many years beyond that and dedication, no doubt.

What about Cheryl Grice? She's in the Auckland area. She even takes students. Julian Bream thought highly of her skill. In fact there's a Julian Bream Masterclass episode on CZcams of her playing this very piece.
Perhaps in the colonies we need to stop focusing on our lack of cultural history compared to Europe and focus more on the fact the world sees countries like Australia and New Zealand as more middle aged countries with a cultures of our own rather than new countries with no character.
We sometimes see ourselves differently to how others see us. It is good to remember that.
Australia produced the guitarist in this vid. Sure he had to travel but the fact of it is, a colony had the seeds to produce him. How could that be? Luck? I don't think so. There is culture about the place in this part of the world. If you lived in Europe the novelty of its culture might last ten years, then after that the charm of home could become apparent.

The film composer is an American, whose instrument is the piano. This John Williams was born in Australia and studied music in England, emerging as a classical guitar performe in the late 50s. He perhaps most widely known for his recording of Cavatina from the Deer Hunter.

The music is excellent. But where this music is played makes me sad. Alhambra palace. Magnificent work made by the Andalusian Muslim civilization. But the Muslim people of the 700-year-old Andalusian State were either killed or forcibly converted to Christianity. They were assimilated. Unfortunately, they were all destroyed.
