    A band literally at the peak of their creative and musical heights. Amazing how connected and tight they were from later 96 through mid 98.

    Ahh the young Ben Folds. The 90s were the last time the major labels cared about talent

      @awwcomeonman Před 4 lety +23

      Bullshit, there was great music in the 90s sure, but 99% of the signed bands were utter shit. Have you forgotten what the charts were like? There's way more good bands being signed now. The internet has done amazing things for music, it allows bands to reach us without having to catch the ear of rich guys working for major record labels.

      @SmartStr33t Před 4 lety +10

      @@awwcomeonman True, talent can reach us much more directly now. Jacob Collier would not have worked in the 90s without home studios and CZcams.
      However OP is right that major labels look for the broadest appeal possible now and there isn't money to be made from niche talented acts.

      @@awwcomeonman exactly. the reason people think music was better in the 90s or 80s or 70s is because all the best music from those decades are timeless. In 20 years we’ll only remember the very best music from the 2000s and people will be saying the same thing about now as we say about then.

      They were great songwriters. Forever and Ever Amen was a masterpiece and Reinhold Messner had a lot of interesting stuff too.

    I love the key change in this, the chorus starts on the note E, the third of the chord C major, but in the last chorus there's a real lift and the key modulates to A major, but the tune still starts on the note E, now the fifth of the new key.
    So the melody stays in the same range but you still get the feeling of lift which comes with the key change.
    Then half way through the last chorus it switches back to C Major. Cheeky.

    I’ve always loved Ben and his playing and singing. But I’m always knocked out by Darren and Robert. Playing drums or bass and singing at the same time is NOT easy. Not that playing piano the way Ben does and singing is easy, but there’s a reason there aren’t that many singing drummers or bass players. Those guys are so underrated.
