    You are very welcome for TMCC stuff sir. It makes me happy to know dads stuff went to a good home and will continue to be enjoyed. Hearing you talk about my dad and I sharing the hobby definitely brought a tear to my eye. I miss sharing the hobby with him. I miss that connection. Connecting with people like you continue to make the hobby fun for me. Look forward to hanging out at a York meet in the future.

    I have followed you with my post war trains and enjoyed them. A couple of months ago I took the TMCC plunge like you are now. With my single ZW, I added a power master to each channel since I have 4 track power districts. Boy is it FUN!!! Place your PowerMasters so that you can see the green and red lights on them and easily reach the two switches to go back and forth among your TMCC Locos and Conventional. Get use to little delays like you saw when setting up your locos. Well I was ahead of you once. Now we are even. when the ZW is at 18v, then going through the PowerMaster you will get ~ 15-16 volts on the track. Just crank the remote speed control up all the way.

    Hi Dave, congratulations on receiving your fantastic gift. My advice would be to get a Lionel power brick with updated circuit breaker. I have learned the hard way frying electronic boards on engines and other equipment using my old ZW transformers for powering track. The old circuit breakers will not trip early enough to protect modern equipment. My ZW now only powers accessories.

    The more you use the cab 1 the more you’re gonna fall in love with it. Set Your ZW’s up with line breakers and stray voltage diodes on each output and you’ll be pretty well protecting your loco electronic systems. I run 5 loops I use 1 180W brick and a ZW-L for the other 4. Lionel says anywhere from 16 volts to 18 volts is fine , what’s more important is how much amperage they put out. I sent my Brand new ZW-L back to Lionel because it was barely putting out 16 volts and they told me it was fine.. a lot of guys say they run their command engines on lower voltages and they seem to have less problems

    One suggestion, try using the TMCC at less than maximum power from the transformer and see how it works. I seem to recall when TMCC came out in the 1990s some guys were burning out the wiring in their passenger cars will all that juice flowing through them. I never heard of any engne issues though.

    Totally awesome! I have been using the Cab 1 controller on my S Scale engines that are tmcc and legacy. I checked through some of the comments to see if anyone has mentioned this, if you are using an older transformer make sure to get the Lionel Circuit Breaker that they make for use with older transformers so that the boards won’t get fried if you have a derailment. Very important! I don’t believe they are expensive. There should be mention of it in the book that came with it.

  • @johnandrus3901
    @johnandrus3901 Před 7 měsíci +1

    Very interesting. I run conventional and I own no modern, command control equipment. I bought a gentleman's layout a number of years ago and it came with a C80 transformer and controller. I've never used it, but I figured that if anyone came over to run trains with command controlled engines, I would have the transformer to safely run their stuff. I guess that the breakers are set up to act instantaneously to protect the circuit boards, whereas older Lionel transformers would fry the electronics before the breaker activated. The new stuff is cool, but not my cup of tea. I'll stick with my post-war and MPC stuff, which will run forever. Keep up the great videos.

  • @Billlakeview
    @Billlakeview Před 7 měsíci

    It toook me awhile to figure it out but you do not have to crank the track voltage to 18-20 volts to run the Tmcc engines. This means that you can run conventional engines on the same track with a tmcc loco….just start the conventional engine first with the transformer so that the voltage gets to 12+ and then control the tmcc loco from the remote. On my layout, a double dogbone in a 5’ x 25’ room, I can easily run 4 trains with one conventional loco and one tmcc on each loop. The big key is to use slower conventional engines, like those AC engines like the classic Santa Fe with the Pullmor motor or the old turbine…your Marx and some of the O27 engines just go too fast on 12 volts for the tmcc engines to stay ahead on the loop….Looking forward to seeing 6-8 trains running on your 4 levels….what fun.

    • @Billlakeview
      @Billlakeview Před 7 měsíci

      I am using a 180 block for each loop together with MTH dcc variable control with the wifi remote to run my conventional trains. I have connected the tmcc via their special connector to the dcc so that, when the voltage is high enough, I can kick in a tmcc engine to run with the conventional loco. I used to use an old lionel ZW but the MTH approach let me have walk around control and whistle/bell control for the conventional engines. My track is Gargraves Phantom line with each loop having only 2 drops and I have had no problem running 2 engines with each pulling lighted passenger cars. Perhaps the conductivity for the old lionel track is a problem, but I think your control issue is more the size of your transformers. With the number of drops you already have, rebuilding your ZW’s is the real key. BTW, I never really enjoyed using the inner rings on the ZW to run trains and so , if you can, rebuild 2 ZW’s phasing them together(this is the key to using tmcc with both ZW’s.)

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  Před 7 měsíci

      I would not have thought about running conventional and TMCC on the same loop. It sound’s nerve racking!

    • @Billlakeview
      @Billlakeview Před 7 měsíci

      Not really a problem when the conventional loco needs a lot of power to move relatively slowly, since the new engines with tmcc have a faster speed at lower voltages and thus you are just adjusting the speed of the tmcc loco via the remote. I do admit that I run shorter consists when doing this. Each of my loops has a passing siding where I have power switches on the tracks between the switches which allows me to run 2 conventional locos on each loop. If the conventional engines on each loop are approximately the same speed for the same voltage, and one loco starts to catch the slower one, I let the faster loco enter the block and turn off the power to the block and let the slower engine regain a sizable lead and then turn the block back on. This is easier if the engine has a direction lock but newer conventional loco start their direction cycle with forward and in the time it takes for the slower engine to gain a lead the faster engine will be off long enough to reset the direction cycle to be forward first. This works nicely for my Williams locos. I bet it would not work for Marx engines if they were not the same speed but you might not have to worry since your loops are continuous without turnouts that might trip the direction of their mechanical direction unit. You could experiment with Marx locos and adjust the speed of each train almost totally with the number of cars in the consist since the motors in the Marx locos are so similar. As you might surmise, I love lots of trains moving. I have run 3 tmcc engines on a single loop using the passing sidings to have consists pass each other with all the trains on the loop in the same direction.

    Wow. amazing! I have not really considered going TMCC since it involves moving to a higher level & price for compatible locomotives. I do own and use some non conventional electronic controlled gear with my HO layout which has both DC and DCC (using Digitrax DCC) and I also have 1 Lionchief Pennsy 0-8-0, my 2 Menards (bluetooth?) and a beautiful MTH Blue Comet 831 that I can operate either conventionally or using the MTH DCS Remote Commander. • @PhilBender612

    You're probably gonna want to pick up a power master. So you can run conventional using the cab one. Also I don't know what you're using for power supply. But at least adding a power master will give you a fast acting circuit breaker. Post war transformers circuits are too slow will cause damage to modern engines. There are people like Hennings trains who will rebuild your z w with a fast acting circuit breaker.
