The winner of the 2021 Cannes Film Festival’s prestigious Palme d’Or, Titane is a thrillingly confident vision from Julia Ducournau that deposits the viewer directly into its director’s headspace. Moving with the logic of a dream-and often the force of a nightmare-the film begins as a kind of horror movie, with a series of shocking events perpetrated by Alexia (Agathe Rouselle, in a dynamic and daring breakthrough), a dancer with a titanium plate in her skull following a childhood car accident. However, once Alexia goes into hiding from the police, and is taken in by a grief-stricken firefighter (Vincent Lindon), Ducournau reveals her deployment of genre tropes to be as fluid and destabilizing as her mercurial main character. A feverish, violent, and frequently jaw-dropping ride, Titane nevertheless exposes the beating, fragile heart at its center as it questions our assumptions about gender, family, and love itself.

Agathe Rousselle's performance was incredible. I'm actually still a little terrified of her based solely on the film, but it's nice to see her smiling and laughing. Would love to see her do something incredibly different like a rom com or something... just so I don't have to be afraid of her anymore

20:26 What she says is very personal. She says that the character doesn't know who she is before being truly loved. Her father doesn't look at her, doesn't love her so Adriane can't define her personality. Once she met Vincent, once she is truly unconditionally loved, she comes to life, she knows who she is. Julia is talking about love here. She is talking about what's falling in love is for her.
its all good if it was actually depicted in a movie. there is a hint of it. a whiff of it. you can cut the whole "drama" in 5-10 minutes.and its sad that it needs explanation like that.
all the other shit is just neo gore. like she spends 2 minutes taking a pick from ear. we see a guy vomit for 2 minutes. really? how does it adds to the story? you can spend this 4 minutes on showing why is she actually like that. and film is full of this. its poor on character development and rich on neo-gore and shocking stuff that stops becoming shocking after a while. the whole "p" thing becomes pretty boring and in your face kind of thing. i get it, how does it changes the character? oh, she dies lol. immediately after it.
no matter how over the top the premise is - i can buy it as long as the characters behave as they would behave in a pretended world. but they are just pawns for directors self gratification. none of them looked alive, the conveniently suddenly became blind or dumb (its a pitty cause the actors performed great).
i think Yorgos Lanthimos is much better in this aspect. he creates new rules of world, but all characters follow those rules- which transforms into a great drama.
What? Then what about the serial murders?
The way she talks about her film is an example of how European directors think and conceive their films. The process is not straightforward, formulaic and obvious but build on metaphors and through back alleys.
One of the best films I have watched in years, directed by Julia Ducournau and winner of the Palme D’Or 2021. Julia had already gotten some eyebrows raised in 2016 after “Raw”. She raised the bar quite high with “Titane”.
It is one of those films that keeps you thinking about even days after watching it. Less than a handful have exerted that impact on me so far.
Granted! It is not for everybody, it is unconventional, aggressive, cathartic to the point that it easily gets the viewer off the comfort zone.
The leading actress speaks no more than ten words in the whole film. You do not need words when a look, tears, dance can speak for themselves.
Body expression is centrally powerful in the film. And the music from “Future Islands” does the rest of the trick.

A scene of firefighters dancing in brotherhood trance comes into its own. Dancing, indeed, is an outlet for those men to release pent-up anger, emotions, and energy. Relations being expressed through physical confrontation, camaraderie, trust.
The beauty and art of unspoken movements being carried away by the occasion.
I would give 5/5 stars. This is the film I believe will get away with the Academy Award for best foreign film of 2021 and, wishfully, best leading actress.
Agathe Rousselle is ON fire, amazing actress. Insane.

I just came back from the theater after seeing Titane. Believe the hype!!!
Thank you. I can't even watch this yet, until after I see it. Don't know how easy that'll be in my part of the US, maybe not till bluray or streaming but definitely at the top of my list. Also from the trailer & brief interviews with Julia Ducournau, it's just reaffirming my interest and fascination with French extreme Cinema and another exciting addition to this renaissance or turn around in artistic horror etc.

@@elfambino4066 it isn’t as gross as that person is saying. It is mostly just nudity, then again, different culture. The gore isn’t a that bad and off screen some times. It is more emotional than gross.

Absolutely fantastic film. In my opinion, well deserved Palme d'Or. I know this film mix more genres, but for me was in first place a love story, and what an amazing love story!! Julia demostrate once again her amazing talent, Agathe make a role just fenomenal, absolutely outstanding; and Vincent, well, is an actor that plays in a superior league, he is the MVP of acting.

I kinda hated it while watching it, but it grew on me afterward. Really special work. To me, the core theme was not just love, but love & trauma.

Due to me not eating beforehand and the audio being so experimental, this movie caused me to faint just outside the theatre room, for about a minute. Then I went back in and saw the rest. It’s a movie I truly cannot get out of my head. I’ve had no history of fainting at all but this movie I guess managed to push me to that. I’m in love with this film. It’s something else. Truly special.
Thought I was gonna faint when she was breaking her nose on the sink but took some deep breaths and overcame it !

Titane(2021) is favorite film in me...
Because this film is so dinamic hard horror and on the other hand, it's a intense love. this sense of subjectivity is a force that head-on though the vertical structural world.

Dune was visually stunning. But felt more like a cw movie. Too many dream sequences.

if you have the chance to see the movie, go see it, it is great! I think it is a little overhyped in some parts on the internet, I really enjoyed it and probably one of the best movies this year, but some make it to come the second coming of christ, but it is certainly not that. Still really excited where the career of Julia will lead, this is just her second movie and also Raw was alreadz incredible! That Agathe never acted before is almost unbelievable. Incredible Performance. But sometimes the less experienced can make for cinematic gold. Just think City Of God for example.

I felt the exact complete opposite. This film is disturbing and out there but my exact thoughts were after thinking about is that cinema is in an absolute better place for films of this nature simply existing. It's not for everyone but that's the same for most art. And that's what this film is. We need more art films and less MCU films of its ilk. Crime against humanity is a bit much.
@@toneslice989 Disturbing? i find more disturbing that a jury gave this movie the palm d'or. If to produce art is enough to put together a couple of weird ideas in a movie( like to get pregnant by a car) we would be all artists on this world.

@@camcabbas yes , it' s about two lonley human beings that found the family they haven' t: the poor serial killer girl/boy found a father(after the killing of about 300 people, take in mind), the steroid addicted fireman, a son/daughter! Ohhhh how cute! But the biggest dilemma for me is this: who will pay for the newborn 's studies: the cadillac or the fireman?
