  • Here’s my reaction to the @FELIP’s new official music video ’Bulan’ 🔥🌕🔥
As requested, I did a breakdown of the history, culture, and mythology behind the themes in this music video, such as the diverse indigenous mythologies of the Philippines regarding the moon and the moon-eating dragon known as the Bakunawa. I’ll be sharing my thoughts from my perspective as a Pinoy Historian and a Filipino Culture Bearer.

Slaves were more like people who were in debt and taken in for "payment" and do free labor until the debt owed is paid in full and will then be given the choice to go back to their family or continue to work for their current master and paid for services rendered. It's far from western slavery who based everything in skin color and removed basic human rights if you're of darker skin.

In the Visayan creation, Libulan loves to wear silver and not red. Libulan died because his grandfather Kaptan accidentally killed him with lighting because his older brother Likalibutan tried to rebel against their grandparents when their parents Lidagat and Lihangin died. The God of Time, Kanlaon, gave life to Libulan again but they are divided into seven moons. Libulan is no longer alone, having new siblings. The moons are Haliya, Subang, Mayari, Libulan, Banilig, Banoor, and Bulan. Many people misunderstood that Libulan and Bulan are the same God, but Bulan is a younger incarceration of Libulan. They both have slender bodies, well mannered and gay. The seven moon dancers are the seven moon phases (the New Moon not included). Bulan is called "The Last Moon" not just because he is the only moon God left, but he is also the "Waning Cresent" which is the last phase of the moon. Haliya is the "Waxing Cresent", the second phase and of the moon after New Moon. While Haliya fighting Bakunawa, her blood spilled on the moon which causes the Blood Moon. In some versions, the Blood Moon is caused by Bakunawa's crimson tongue.
The other moons died except Libulan and Bulan. Libulan (The Full Moon) was saved by the God of the Afterlife, Sidapa and they are now lovers (as I mentioned earlier, Libulan is gay). They lived together in Mt. Madjaas.

This is great. We learned so much from this.
    CHECK THIS:
    1. Mr. LUIS Portelles Channel tackle BULAN Music Videos as someone who is knowledgeable in FILM and explain why those elements( like dragon eye, etc) are borh present in borh MV....Now
    2. Mr. KIRBY ARAULLO, who is a HISTORIAN and very much knowledgeable on our Culrural Heritage tackle BULAN CONCEPT/theme which is based on Phil Mythology and explain the song's message.
    3. Then in a comment SECTION from Mr. Luis Portelles reaction in BULAN being accused of PLAGIARISM, a FILIPINO who made reserch and SPOKE Plagiarism in INTERNATIONAL Conferences stated how plagiarism works in detail, and that it is not applicable in the case of BULAN.
AND THE ACCUSER can be sued in court.
    4. A Lawyer in a comment section fron another video comparng the sound of both songs also stated plagiarism is a serious matter and someone can not just accuse an artist hardwork without valid evidences and are not expert on that field. Giving CREDIT by an artist to someone is not as simple as you put it in writing.
I think CREDIT is given by an artist if he uses the ART or WORK of an Artist itself or an ARTIST UNIQUE work, his own work, his design, his creation with his owm artistic, intelectual mind hehe and both parties agrees with payment involve ofcourse.
This only shows that many profssionals are backing Felip. They want to protect not only Felip but our Country's Heritage our Culture, the PPop Music that is now making a big NOISE internationally.
Those accusations maybe are deliberately malicious. Maybe with the intention of sabotaging PPOP in general so it will not continue to rise. OR THEY are just Ignorant of law and Culture and too passionate in supporting their idols in a negative way that they cant see that they are being eaten up, their whole being, their roots

Once again, learned tons about our history and culture. Thank you! Barely know anything about our precolonial history because it is barely thought in schools. In Ifugao where I grew up, I only know of a bit of the precolonial culture because of the stories passed down by the older generations.
... The meaning of the word 'kundiman' stuck to me the most. Very interesting info about it. Now we know! Additional knowledge to be passed down. 😁

To add, growing up in mindanao, I think they’re just familiar with color patterns of Maguindanaon and Maranao. The significance of gold and red has
alot of meaning in the Indigenous clothing in my homeland.
The Talaandig, Higa-onon in Bukidnon , Blaan & T’boli in South Cotabato, Teduray in Upi Magundanao and also, the Manobo in Davao wears red predominantly in their tapestry.

I remembered my Lola telling us stories about how, during lunar eclipse, our ancestors used to bang on pots and pans while chanting “iuli ang bulan! iuli ang bulan!” It means “isauli ang buwan” in Tagalog. They believed the moon was swallowed by the bakunawa. They would do this until the moon shines again, which is when the bakunawa spit it out.

I just find it beautiful how our pre-colonial ancestors see gander as fluid and queerness is something that we should be proud of and celebrated. Unfortunately, a lot of people today have prejudices against the LGBTQ+ community. It just saddens me that people are bullied, mocked upon and discriminated for being who they are. I know someone who left their home because their parents did not accept them for who they are. I hope that we can all look back from our past and learn from our ancestors on how they view gender and sexuality, maybe then, no one will ever be ashamed of who they are

On another note, not that we are blaming anybody, but in school, I learned more about greek mythology than any of ours. No mention of any of our deities even. I only learned about them from actively seeking out info (and they also don't come easy). Young people today are probably not proactive about learning our mythology because they aren't even aware that such things exist. But I'm very grateful that things like Felip's "Bulan" and videos such as yours are rising to the surface now. 🇵🇭
