  • ✨🏳️‍🌈✨ How much do we really know about gender and sexuality? What wisdom can we learn from our ancestors? What do Bamboos Have to do with it? 🤔
🏳️‍🌈🇵🇭🏳️‍⚧️Gender and sexuality remains a controversial topic in a majority-Catholic country like the Philippines. Members of the LGBTQ community, especially Trans folks, have not just been misunderstood but have also been constantly under attack. Queer people in the Filipino community today are often accused of being sexual predators and perverted maniacs. Yet, if we look back deeper into our precolonial roots, our ancestors had a more enlightened view towards gender and sexuality. Let’s learn more❣️

Filipino gay here. I have befriended two Spaniards, in which one of them is a good-looking man in which I had a crush on. My other friend is a straight woman in her 40's who told me that she might feel it weird, but she can't do nothing but respect the feelings of my kind. My crush, meanwhile, a good-looking man in his 30's, somehow acknowledged and appreciated my feelings when I confessed it to him. Sadly, he is straight and he is observably in a happy and stable relationship with a woman, so we cannot be more but just friends. My crush and I are still cordial and civil towards each other when we talked. It showed me how much tolerant Spanish society towards LGBTQ people nowadays.
I once had a crush on a Filipino guy, he has a smart, educated and quite affable in appearance, but still get me appalled from his reaction after I confessed my feelings. Now, I am already blocked and no longer have any idea if he's even still alive and breathing.

Tbh, I thought the PH is only tolerant of the LGBTQIA+. But I have always been curious because ever since I was little, I have always seen them in every aspect of my life, from uncles, classmates, to the next door neighbor. And, at least where I grew up, they were not ostracized or shamed (except for a few bullying here and there, especially with kids) but were treated with respect (at least outwardly). But now I think it is because of our pre-colonial culture. We may not be aware of it, but maybe even through those centuries, we haven't really lost that culture.
This is really cool. I've heard about gender benders as prominent in pre-colonial PH but I've never encountered published articles about it, I was a little bit skeptical. Thank you for this. I hope topics like this make their way into the academe somehow.

I am really disappointed that a lot of Filipinos are throwing hurtful words at her, saying that she is immoral and less of a woman because she is in a same sex relationship. Sadly, we never went back to our pre colonial beliefs regarding gender fluidity while the colonizers who taught us to be homophobic are now moving forward and accepting LGBT and same sex union.

I was watching a video a few days ago, and was quite surprised to learn of the acceptance of homosexuality in Viking society. Homosexuality was accepted in almost all ancient civilizations - Greek, Roman, Japanese, Polynesian, Southeast asian etc. But it seems that the root of homophobia are the three middle eastern religions namely, Judaism, Islam and Christianity. As I am gay and catholic, I would like to know why.

Not all Greeks were comfortable about homosexuality. Plato, in the dialogue Symposium seems to permit and even admire it, but "Laws" condemn it as "against nature," so he says. Homosexuality was mainly okay - if you were in the Greek upper class. Most in the lower class seemed to deride it as a form of perversion. But as things stand, it's surely better in Judeo-Christian religions, but Greece far from a "tolerant" utopia.

Such is why the celebration of the 500th Anniversary of Christianity in the Philippines disgusts me. Why are they celebrating cultural erasure, colonialism, genocide, and discrimination? If I were to return in time, I would help my people fight back against the arrival of Spain. Perhaps, unified our country so it would become a council of kingdoms, without the erasure of the minorities.
LGBTQ is a Philippine minority. They should be treated with respect, similar to the indigenous and the people with disability.

Filipino (Standard Tagalog) and Indonesian (Standard Malay of Indonesia) doesn't have gender pronouns for example in Spanish the word for he is *él* the word for she is *ella* in Filipino the word for he and she are 1 its *siya* in Indonesian is *dia* . In English *him* is for man and *her* is for woman but in Indonesian its *nya* and in Filipino is *niya* . In Spanish the pronoun of group of men are *ellos* the group of women are *ellas* in Filipino it's *sila* it's gender neutral and in Indonesian is *mereka* it's gender neutral. In Indonesian and Filipino the word for son or daughter is the same *anak* and so on.

What is the name of the background music 🎶 in this video Kirby? Also good introduction towards the Ancestral perspectives of LGBT people and their purposes in Ancient Filipino society
On the Diwatas/Devatas/Deities of Filipino Mythology, you want to talk about how “gender fluid” some of them can be in another future video right?
That’s good and all but…regarding “Filipino Deities” what about their many:
•Epithets (Makiling is one of the many epithets of the Mountain guardian ⛰ in Mt. Makiling)
•Mythological roles in their respective regional mythology
•variations of the same story (like Arachne VS Athena)
•pre-colonial and Abrahamic cycles versions of the same story (like Sarimanok or Pele of Hawaiian mythology)
•Character evolution, symbolism and associations (like Aphrodite from her early Ishtar war based connections to solely beauty, fertility and sexual love by the Ancient Greeks to motherhood and political power by the Romans) see Overly Sarcastic Productions video
•comparative literature or influences from other mythologies cultures like Chinese (Chinese Ghosts), Indian (Bathala is either like Brahma or Shiva, Agui of Tagalog Mythology is suspiciously 🤨 like Agni and they are both associated with fire 🔥), or Arabic (kapre weirdly sounds like a certain Arabic word) you did talk about where Santonilyo of Cebuano Mythology really came from in a previous video or Galura from Garuda
You can apply all of the same criteria towards “Filipino Mythology” in terms of Deities, creatures, demigods, afterlife, concepts, philosophy and many more in future videos like what you did with Trese. So When will you tackle them Kirby?

Makes sence that binabai will be tresured by the mother. They will be seen as staying with their mother as she grows old because they will not have a biological child. The strengths of a man and care of a woman (generally speaking).
Bamboo = resilience this is something I always believe about our countrymen in general.
People who are ignorant are fearful of the thing that they do not know or understand. Ika nga, fear of the unknown. The response should be, Do unto others what you want others to do unto you dapat davah? Respeto lang regardless of sexual orientation.

"It is now use an insult"?
Wag masyadong magalit o ma-offend XD
    Happy Pride Month!!!
