      Have you ever tried to do summer tubing coupled with aquaponics? Getting a 150G stock tank and thinking about putting some trays above the tub to grow veggies. Also wondering on ideas for the fish. Not a goldfish fan. Location is Chicago suburbs.

      How about old spas? Fiberglass/Acrylic. You'd have to either plug all the jets and returns or heavily screen them to use the low velocity/low volume pump but it's about 350-400 gallons. Part of it's about 16' deep and the center would be about 30". Plus it's well insulated to avoid temperature swings.
      PS Would platys be a good tub fish?

      Once again it's interesting to see the huge differences in prices between the US and Germany.
      Here in Germany you get new tubs for peanuts. Last week I bought a 85 liter (22.5 gallon) tub for 6.99€
      I also saw a few 240 liter tubs (that's about 63.5 gallons) for 19.99€
      It's really weird... the materials are the same, the production process is the same... what makes them so much more expensive in the US?

    Love that you include a variety of budget and set up options. We have an apartment patio and 8 tanks indoors and my mother has a decent size back yard, no fish (she’s more into gardening. So, you are giving us great ideas and the basics for us to keep in mind for setting up a tub or two for both. Thank you!

    Hi Rachel; I have 2 Tuff Stuff tubs and both are excellent. I have the 110 gal one that collects Rain water that I use for my water changes. It is out all year long. In 2017 -2018 winter I did not drain it (All fish were brought in) and it froze solid. So solid that the edges were lifted off the ground. It survived without any damage -- it really is tough. Last season I drained it for the winter. Last season, I added the 40 gal Tuff Stuff tub to the line up. I plumbed the 40 gal Tuff Stuff tub to the 110 drain so both are filled with Rain water. Last fall, I brought the 40 gal into the garage for my Goldfish and it worked great. The smaller size works out great because it is easy to transport and fill with good surface area, as you said. I would recommend Tuff Stuff tubs. I also used the Whiskey barrel last year with good success so I purchased another one this year to add to the fun. Thanks for the video and this will be a series I will be looking forward to as I am excited for the season to start. Thanks!

    I got the 110 gallon stock tank from Tractor Supply three summers ago. It is extremely durable and does a great job with plants but I find even with an east exposure, the temperature fluctuates too much from day to night for fish to do well in it so I keep it strictly for water and bog plants and the sound from the spillover. The wild birds like to drink from it which is also a plus.

    • @JJJacey
      @JJJacey Před 5 lety +1

      I have the 110 as well, my fish do just fine :) we did buy a sun shade (shade sail?) because even in 70 degree partial sun the outside of the tub gets to 105 degrees! Wrapping it with wood or stacked bricks would insulate much better. Another tip I've found that adding a few cinder blocks really helps the temperature stay steadier, they heat up with the water all day but over night they help hold the heat for a bit. The water still cools down but more gradually, and my fish love to swim through them.

    • @johnlogan1022
      @johnlogan1022 Před 5 lety

      The tank gets full sun all morning and the rubber definitely gets hot to the point where if I put my hands on the rim of the tank it will burn and the water inside the tank feels like bath water by the end of the day on hot days. I've contemplated painting the outside white to reflect the heat to see if that would help at all..

  • @michaelmccarthy4077

    Water lilies can actually be grown in quite a shallow amount of water, you really only need about three inches of water above the crown, although some of the natives here in Florida grow in an inch. Wood whiskey barrels are an excellent choice for tubbing because the wood does not absorb and transmit heat as plastic does (wood is an insulator, not a conductor), so the majority of the thermal energy only affects the surface of the water producing smaller temperature fluctuations. Great video for people that want to tub on a budget!

    • @RachelOLeary
      @RachelOLeary  Před 5 lety

      yea, those little whiskey resin barrles I have would not have that much space above the crown, really. I am sure I COULD do it, but would definitely need a pygmy variety. As for the super shallow tubs (like my 50g rubbermaid and that 40g)- again, would definitely need a small variety of lily or lotus otherwise there wouldn't be room for anything else. I appreciate the input! I LOVE whiskey barrels (the real ones), but here they cost over $100 :(

    Thought I would mention this as another option for people to think about for summer tubbing/sump. I use an old fridge/freezer combo layed on its back (atop besser/concrete blocks to keep it off the ground and lessen opportunity for rust) with doors removed as a sump for my discus. I just removed all the inards - the shelving and brackets etc and then put a $30 pond liner in it. It sits under my carport with the plumbing going out my bedroom window. Half is used for mechanical/biological and the other half is all potted plants - amazon swords, elodea, val and ludwigia. It gets plenty of light due to the carport roof being transluscent. It takes a bit of work to prepare the fridge, and I would not use without a liner (chemical residues etc). Bonus feature is they are insulated and can hold a large water volume - mine holds 160 gallons.

So my husband bought me a pot for our anniversary and instead of putting a plant in it I lined it and turned it into a balcony tub. Just a basic setup with a circulating pump. It's 19"W x 13"H interior dimensions. Yesterday I put a dwarf hardy water lily and some horsetail rush in it. Today I checked the temp and the water is 95.4 degrees. 😦 I should probably add that the it's a second floor balcony, East facing, and gets full shade starting at 1:00 afternoon. I'm concerned that the water lily is getting too hot. Should I be worried? Is there anything I can do?
