  • In this Explearning Communications lesson, I teach you how to interrupt someone politely to get back on track in conversation. When people talk so much that you cannot get a word in edgewise, you need to politely interrupt. I teach you an amazing strategy to shift the focus back on the original question or topic at hand so that the speaker does not go off on a random tangent.

I dare you to talk to the person who came into my furniture store recently. I don’t care how often anyone interrupted, she literally would NOT STOP TALKING! She was there for hours, I actually shut the store down and walked her to her car and she was still talking. I talked over her and said, “it’s getting dark, I’m leaving now because I don’t like to be here after dark” then I walked away and got in my car while she was still talking. She talked about herself, her family, her ex husband, her bad health, the weather, everything except why she actually came into the furniture store. It was unreal. I felt like I was on a hidden camera prank show it was so bizarre.

You are a kind person. Many people would not have listened that long.
I think she was probably lonely.

I'm dying laughing at your comment.
But seriously, I can't stand when people talk too much and don't know how to shut up.

Thank you for the healthful video. One of my friends always highjack any conversations and start talking about politics. He wouldn’t let anyone to talk but can keep going on for hours… I’ll try this next time☺️

My mother does the same thing. It's so annoying except my mother changes the top on purpose to something about her because she only happy if she talking about herself. I think she is a narrisist

My wife calls me every night on her way home and feels the need to give me a blow by blow of every single thing that she said on that day. The conversation is usually..."and then I said....", "and then I said....", "and then I said...", "and then I said". It never ends. I've tried politely telling her that I don't need a blow by blow of every little thing but she gets very angry with me. She does the same thing when we get home. There is no dialog. She just seems to need to talk and talk. It's gotten to the point where I just get a pit in my stomach.

Most will not even let you say that even if you interrupt. The best is to just walk away leaving them dumbstruck.

Thank you for trying, but my friend is a level 10 nonstop no breaks for two hours talker. Considering breaking up with her because I can’t take it anymore. I’ve tried putting up an index finger. I’ve tried a version of what you recommend. The problem is I can’t even get one single word Into her diatribe to be able to begin to end the madness. I am now going in search of advice for extreme cases. PS. My teenage daughter says I should just stand up and walk away. That made me laugh, but it might actually come down to that.😂

How do I argue with someone for example "a teacher" who keeps talkin to not get "criticism " and he just keep talking, and it's rude if WE interrupt him, and he gets mad for it, andhe somehow wins the argument

Do you have videos about when somebody has a problem with a sibling’s baby’s mother suggesting they date their brother when that someone is already in a loving relationship and wants IVF to have a baby? Is that a power struggle?

This is an article I’ve waiting for ! I had 2 dates recently where the women would NOT stop talking, could not get a word in edgewise, even though I tried. There was no 2nd date with either of them as I lost ALL interest. Next time will try this approach.

I’m a BPD/ptsd/tbi diagnosis. Please Interrupt me in any way you deem necessary. I understand now that I can keep
Talking, just tell me to stop. I literally will share near anything about my life to random strangers. I hate that I do this. I have to be extremely mindful NOT to share, but inevitably I will forget and start talking again. I’m sorry. I’m trying my best.

I hate how Trump interrupts ppl by saying "excuse me" as if that's somehow polite 🙄 - I wish there was a video about how to get your mother to stop talking without getting her feelings hurt.
