  • Knife Sharpening tips and tricks for the Buck Reaper and other similar knives. Many of the suggestions in here can be used when sharpening any knife, but some are specific to this particular shape of blade.

    Great vid as usual Cody.
    I used to use painters tape, (Blue, Green, Black, Red) and packing tape. I don't use any of those any longer. I have discovered Hockey Tape is the best of the lot. No residue, resistant to water, removes easily, and tough to scratch up.
    I also put Hockey Tape on my blade table instead of painters tape. This is the real test that proves Hockey Tape is, without a doubt in my opinion, the tape to use.

    Cody A+ on this one. The tips for this vid go a lot farther then your previous ones. The half stone tip is something that Solves a problem I’ve wrestled with. Keeping the knife in one place also is a help for me. Dude this video series has gone up a level bud.

    I use the packing tape from USPS.
    I hang it off the edge at first, then cut to match the knife profile, pull the tape off and slide it up to just past the bevel.
    Then cut along the spine, and do the other side.
    Sometimes I'll leave some at the spine to wrap over to protect the spine from getting scratched too.
    Love your work with the angle cube, Cody. Especially to quantify the angle difference up to the tip. Hot Tip!

    I have used both, but have moved toward packing tape. It stays on better, especially if you are stepping up through many levels of stones/tape.

      @EdgePro  Před 4 lety

      Warren, I totally hear ya. It definitely stays on better.

  • @bradsbladespro-sharpening5364

    Great video Cody!! I see the regular stones work well for that little recurve in the middle of the blade. It’s good to know! Whenever I come across a recurve, I automatically grab the narrow stones, no matter how deep it is. The recurve on this knife appears to be fairly shallow.

    • @EdgePro
      @EdgePro  Před 4 lety +1

      Brad, Yes it was extremely shallow. I hardly even noticed it. I avoid the 1/2" stones as much as I can because I feel like they wear much faster.

    Try the FROGTAPE painters tape, works better as doesn't break down with the water saturation issues.

    ScotchBlue Painter's Tape for Exterior Surfaces #2097 is the best of both worlds.
    The tape is plastic and waterproof. Unlike packing tape, it is easy to remove and never leaves sticky residue.

      I will be looking in to this as well. I think a customer sent me a knife one time with it already taped and had this stuff on it but I didn't know what it was.

    Hey Cody I was wondering if you could do a video on ceramic knives ? I recently bought a hand full of your diamond matrix stones and it showed you can sharpen with them. Also if you could do one on serrated knives thanks! Cheers!

    • @EdgePro
      @EdgePro  Před 4 lety +1

      Howdy, sharpening ceramic knives is much different. They don't feel sharp -even when they are. And they do not develop burrs like steel does. You will need diamond stones to sharpen them as well, aluminum oxide & silicon carbide stones don't work on them. As for doing a video on them - great suggestion! I'm hoping to have time to film some more videos in the near future so I'll see if I can get my hands on a ceramic knife.

    Packing tape works extremely well for me. I always use lots of water so the painter's tape doesn't last long.

    • @EdgePro
      @EdgePro  Před 4 lety +2

      Yeah, when I use painters tape I have to be careful not to get carried away with the water. And I wipe the table off frequently.

  • @7mpowerd
    @7mpowerd Před 4 lety +1

    I use painters tape since it’s easier to cut and get to follow the edge. Packing is harder to get to follow the edge

    • @EdgePro
      @EdgePro  Před 4 lety

      Agreed, - A customer shared a pretty cool trick me awhile ago for cutting packing tape to fit your knife. First he lays the cutting tape down on a plastic cutting board, then traces the knife with a marker, then scores the tape and it fits the knife like a glove. I tried it once and it worked pretty good.

    I have both painters and packing tape. I’ve found painters tape is a little easier to apply and get to sharpening quicker. Packing tape definitely offers a little more protection though...

    • @EdgePro
      @EdgePro  Před 4 lety

      Agreed. One time I used packing tape, and it left a strange discoloration on the blade . . . ever since then I've been a little hesitant to use it. But I've never heard of anyone else that happened to.

  • @charleshodgdon7311
    @charleshodgdon7311 Před 4 lety +1

    Can you do a video on keeping bevel even along the whole length of the blade. I constantly run into this problem when you get close to tip. I’m not sure I get your explanation in this video.

    • @EdgePro
      @EdgePro  Před 4 lety

      Charles, I go over this a little bit more in the Boker Kalashnikov video. But I'll try to keep touching on the subject.

  • @shaundominguez8320
    @shaundominguez8320 Před 3 lety

    Newbie here and this may seem like a dumb question but I thought the instructions said to move the knife (tip) over so that the stone always is sharpening over the table. I assume this is an exception to that rule. Any guidence for me on when to do that and when not to?

    • @EdgePro
      @EdgePro  Před 3 lety

      Shaun - good question. If the knife is stiff enough you can center the knife on the table and sharpen the whole thing (as long as the knife isn't too long). But if it is flexible (most kitchen knives) then I'd draw the knife across the table.

    Do you putt the Stones into the Water

    • @EdgePro
      @EdgePro  Před 4 lety

      The Edge Pro stones, do not require soaking. Just splash and go. However, there are some aftermarket stones that do require soaking - just not ours.
